Water in the lower unit of my port Suzi

potter water

Decided to let the pro's pressure test the watery lower unit. They could find NO leak at all. Held 14 PSI for two hours. I guess that is the good news. Now, I'll always wonder how half a cup of water got in there. My motor guy said there'd be no point in replacing seals because the lower unit is good to go as is.

Any one else had one of these water in the lower unit transient events??

Oh well, good time to replace the impellers, so I'm glad I took it apart.

My guess would be that the gasket on the drain plug or the fill level plug was bad allowing water in. Put new gaskets on those screws (you should every time anyway) and run the boat.

Yes, I've got new gaskets, but I'll always wonder. Oh well, we'll see what a long boating season next year brings. I'll check it after each of the first couple of outings. My boat guy said that although it wasn't ideal, that some limited amount of water in the xmission oil wont hurt the xmission over time due to operating. He also said that the bigger concern from even small amounts left over during extended storage can cause corrosion and of course, freeze damage.
