Water Level Indicator On CD22

The water level tube on my boat has gotten nasty looking with what I guess is mold and or crud of some sort inside the tube. Especially where the water level usually is.

Does anyone have an idea how to clean that ? It would take a really long and skinny brush. Put crap in the water tank too. Maybe I should just replace it but I haven't looked to see how hard it would be to access the tube fitting on the tank.

Any thoughts?

I removed mine entirely and used a threaded nylon plug to seal the hole. I now know my tank is empty when I run out of water.

I took the water tank out to repair a flawed installation (previous C-Dory factory owners) and while not easy is certainly doable. I think you can replace that line without taking the tank out but it would be a pain. A really small long brush might be, no joke, the answer. I measured water as I put it into the tank and found that nothing showed at five gallons. At ten gallons I could see the water level and put tape around the "gauge" at that point. Works roughly, when I can no longer see anything its time to refill.

I bought a baby bottle brush. It has a big brush on one end for the bottle, and a small brush on the other end for the nipple. I cut the brush in half and attached the nipple brush to a straightened coat hanger. I use it when I am flushing the tank. It works pretty well.

you could head for the nearest auto parts house and get an oil galley brush. These are a small brush with about a 2' wire handle used for cleaning the oil passages in motor blocks.

other options would include running a mixture of scotch and water in your tank rather than just straight water . This would hinder the growth of cooties :)

I unscrew the sight tube clips and route it out to the cockpit and flush out the whole system with a bleach mixture about once a year....I figure if the sight tube is looking cruddy, the tank is probably in about the same condition

Here is what I do once a year to Raven Dancers water tank.
Attach a length of plastic tube over the end of your faucet, pitch the other end out the window about 6' ~ 8' of tubing is fine.
Now give a couple of pumps on the foot pump and the water from the tank will start to sipion out on its own. Leave the tube attached to the faucet you will need it again the next day.
Once the water from the tank is empty mix one cup of household bleach for every 10 gallons of water. If your tank is like the one in my 2006 it is a 20 gallon water tank, so with my highly developed math skills you will need 2 cups of bleach.
I mix the bleach in a quart pitcher with water to make it easy to pour into the water intake on the boat, without spilling it all over.
Once you get the "mix" inside the water tank, becareful not to slop this water on your new jeans or shirt, unless you like tiedye stuff.
Now refill the water tank with plain water using the proper type of hose of course.
Fill the tank so the water goes well into and up the indicator tube on the boat. I then get an eye dropper and add a few extra drops of bleach down the end of the tube.
Now go to bed and let the bleach mixture soak overnight.
The next day you are ready to drain the bleach mixture from the tank, so your tube is still attached to the end of your faucet so give the foot pump a few pumps and get the water flowing and drain out the tank. I rinse the tank out twice with clear plain water.
After the final rinse and tank refill I get a glass and fill it up with water from the boat tank and hold the glass up to a light or the sun if you live outside of Washington or Oregon. You should see nothing but sparkly clear water, if you see "floaters", or other debris I would repeat the entire process with the bleach mixture until the water is clear.
I know that this is a time consuming project, but you can take solic in the fact that messing about in boats does not deduct time from your life span ! So enjoy the project.

Hi Pluto,

My boat is a 2004, 22 ft Cruiser. If your boat is configured similar to mine, you should be able to access the tube clamp if you remove the top of the bilge pump reservoir cover just inside the door. Only four screws hold this on. Further access can be obtained if you remove the entire cover assembly. There are only a few screws to take out. While you are at it you may want to fill the screw holes made in the floor with epoxy. As I am writing this, I am is the process of modifying my rear dinette seat cabinet and have removed the entire assembly including water tank.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Best regards,

The first time we used our 99 22' Cruiser, I could not pump water out of a full tank or see the water level. I discovered that both tubes were crimped just beyond the plastic nipple coming out of the tank. I removed the tank, installed street L's into the tank and replaced the water level tube and tubing to the pump. In total it was not a big project and cost less than $10. I intend to do a periodic bleaching as previously mentioned.

Cleaning is easy, just attach a piece of cloth to straightened clothes hanger and swab it out; dipped in alcohol works good.
I did this exact same thing to Triple J’s water sight tube because it had mineral deposits. Now I drain after each use and it stays clean.
We keep a hose under the rear seat to attach to the facet and toss out the window for draining.

Here is what I just did on a similar problem. Using my universal gun cleaning kit, made for everything from 22s to 12 gauge I theaded the small diameter rods together and used a small bore cloth dipped in isopropyl alcohol. Cheap easy and fast.
I also was frustrated while trying to see the waterline in the tube so I made an easly to see gauge. This consists of a tube length of 25 lb leader with a big trolling bead on the bottom to hold it vertical and keep it sraight. The gauge part that you see is a floating fishing bead that fits the tube. As the water goes up or comes down the floating bead slides up and down the fishing leader inside the tube. Again the plastic bead on the bottom holds the gauge straight so the floating bead moves easily up and down. I tied a knob to the top of this so the contraption can't fall in. When I reclean the tube next year This stuff just pulls out. I hope this helps

WHEN WE HAD OUR CD-22 i TOOK OUT THE TUBE AND PUT IN A WATER PUMP (ELEC) IT WORKS GREAT NO MUSS NO FUSS JUST TURN IT ON AND REMOVE ALL THE WATER YOU WANT . THEN i PUT IN A (T) IN THE LINE AND PUT IN A WASHDOWN HOSE GREAT FOR CLEANING THE BOAT WASHING OUT YOUR TRAILER BRAKES ,SHOWERING,ETC.

Thank you all. On my own it would take me a hundred years to come up with all the suggestions and solutions I can find with just one post on this site. Your the best.
