What's with the Honda tach?

My Honda tachometer has gone erratic. Sometimes it might read 5 or 6,000 when the engine is doing 4,000rpm. I find that if I tap the meter it might settle down (or it might go up to 7,000), so I tend to think it is in the meter itself.

Is this something others have seen?

Hate to think it is meter failure. I expect better of Honda.

Well, if you can find out, let the rest of us know.

Honda has never heard of the problem, so you might call them (again.)

Several hard raps sometimes cures the problem. For a while.

Have you checked the connections on the back of the meter?

We had the same problem as have others. There is an earlier post that discussed the different approaches to solving this problem. What we found, as suggested also my others, was the small switch on the back of the tach that is set for different engines needs to be rotated back and forth to clean the contact. It is a small (jeweler's screw-driver) slot. We also cleaned the wiring connections, but I'm certain it was this mini-rotating switch. It solved the problem.

I would pull each connections associated with the tachometer one at a time, apply a dab Corrosion preventive compound like NYK 77 or dielectric silicone, and re-attach.

Had a similar problem with my trim tabs last fall, problem fixed by performing the above procedure.

Just because a connection is secure doesn’t mean it’s making adequate contact especially on a boat exposed to salt.

Fuses are notorious for corrosion failure, it’s a good idea to clean and check all connections annually, especially the ones outside the cabin.
