Does anyone, besides me, know the name of this guy hauling in a halibut near Petersburg AK? The year was 1985. A very new CD 22 Angler at the time

I don't think I've ever known this boat's owner, but I've seen this one in Petersburg many times - usually near the ramp in the North harbor. I think this photo is from 2011, and I took it in part because the old boat had just been re-powered with a new Yamaha. The smoke stack is in the right place. A davit has been added. It may be the same boat. I probably have pictures (pre-digital slides) of this boat from the 1985 era, too, if I can find them.

Bill,

I think you have a very solid match there. My dad and a relative stayed and fished with these folks. The owner at the time was Dick Aho who had something to do with fisheries in Alaska. I took this digital picture from a printed picture

All the aerials and stacks and front metal box are just too much to not say match!!

It's a small world - filled with a surprising number of C-Dories! I don't know Dick Aho, but I'll bet Ive at least passed him on the street or on the water over the years. I'm sure if I asked around among friends in Petersburg, I'd find people who knew/know him.

I don't suppose you know exactly where the picture was taken near Petersburg. I've caught lots of halibut in Frederick Sound (Sukoi Islands, Thomas Bay and elsewhere). The background looks like it could be the far side of Frederick Sound - especially if a telephoto lens was used. Or might it be somewhere in the north end of the Wrangel Narrows?

Anyway, great picture for reminiscing. Thanks for posting!

I asked the question, this is what I got...

"I remember it being the far side of Fredrick Sound toward a Glacier . There were icebergs in the water."

Bingo on the location! The bergs would be from LeConte. And I just spoke with my daughter - she knows who Dick Aho is. :D

Since we're reminiscing . . . Here's some young guy in Petersburg in 1979:

Sadly, it appears the mystery boat that was the subject of the OP's question, and which became the "Barracuda," has now really fallen on hard times. Couldn't discover the story of her demise while visiting Petersburg this year. Maybe somebody will rescue her.

I saw the boat in regular use for years, and as noted it was re-powered somewhere around 2010. The longest it could have been sitting where it is now is about 2 years. It would be a project, no doubt, but maybe it could be restored. I'd be concerned if it's been filling up with snow, ice, and rain, and then freezing and thawing through a few winters, though!

I've always been puzzled by the foredeck box. Anchor storage? It looks like that might be a slot on the right front of the box for a line? Appears to have a latch for the lid in the center. Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe Chromer (the OP) or his dad have a clue.

You guys are likely looking at 2 different boats. The stack on the Thistle doesn't come out of the roof. Of course it could have been changed, but there is no evidence of any repairs. And, you think there would be as I can see marine plywood and a gob of 5200 holding it down being the "repair" if it were necessary.

I think if you look at all the posts in this thread, you will see that Chromer (OP) and I are talking about exactly the same Petersburg Alaska boat. (There was an incorrect guess, early in the thread, that the boat was the Thistle.) The boat shown in disrepair, on the trailer, in the weeds, in the latest two pictures in the thread (2016 posting) is the same boat shown in the first picture in the thread.

Wonder what the story is on the boat in the weeds? Might be a good deal for someone looking for a restoration project, could be really neat at a good price? How does one search for that info? Alaska DOL?

If anyone is SERIOUSLY interested in pursuing the possibility of buying and restoring the Barracuda, let me know and I will see what I can find out about its current status or availability from folks I know in Petersburg.
