Winter black mouth

Reports are the San Juan's have been producing good fish. I'd like to get out their the next break in weather we have.

Fished 8-1/8-2 this past weekend. Couple keepers have come out of Elger Bay (not from my boat).

Columbia Beach was a mess of tidal junk and driftwood Sunday so only made a couple passes. Cruised up and fished Langley and caught quite a few shakers ranging from 6" to 16". Loads of fun just getting out on the water with the nice span on weather we had.

Area 9 opens back up in a week too. Fishing was decent before it closed.

Tom: do you have to go to the Canon Digi-Troll 10 to get the bottom track features, or does the 5 do this? (price difference of course). Thanks, Mike

Tcr- you can't be using crab traps to catch salmon :)

Tom's the cannon wiz but it looked to me that difference between those new fangled bottom tracking meat seeking downriggers was that on the model 5 you had to use the cannon transducer whereas the model 10 had more transducer options....I think those would be a pretty cool set up.

I have the older digitroll 4's so I had to go to the web site and down load the manuals for both units. If you want bottom track you need the new 10's. The fives will connect to the bottom line depth finder. This allows the captain to control up to 6 downriggers from one stop. This is a set up that is used mostly on the great lakes where you can fish as many rods as you want. It is not uncommon to see a boat with 10 or more rods running at once. I read a articale by a great lakes charter captain that runs up to 16 rods at once including long lines, side planers, jet divers and down riggers all at the same time.

Around the PNW we are only allowed one rod for each fisherman ( there are exceptions) so the most down riggers I see are four but most people I know run just two. If you are running 2 in a small boat then there is no need for controlling them from a fish finder.

The new digitroll 10 is the one you want. There are always older digitroll 4 on ebay and some times on craigslist. Cannon has a great lifetime warranty on external parts. I have two new reels installed on my used craigslist downriggers for free.

If you want to try them lets get together and fish my boat some time in Feb.

I stand corrected. I just did a little more searching and you can bottom follow with the digitroll 5's with the use of a hummingbird depth finder, some models. I would check to see if getting a seperate and new fish finder is more or less then getting the DT10's? You only need one transducer for a pair of dt10's if you get the connect cable. One unit is slave and the other is the master. This is how I have mine set up.

I'm going to call someone about the dt5's it make sure that info is correct. Seems to be a little difference of information depending on where I look.

Taking a couple buddies out blackmouth fishing for a few days. Anybody been out fishing in Wa. area 9 or 6 recently? Anything working well? Anyone fish the derby over the weekend?

Thanks,

Karl

I have not been out but I heard that Point no point has been holding bait and producing fish for the last 3 weeks. Call johns sporting goods and see what he thinks. Then call Holiday sports for a San juan report.

Has anyone had any luck fishing at Jefferson head for Blackmouth or coho, I'm gearing up to do some fishing in area 10 and possibly area 9 also
