Having to start a new topic since the other one was LOCKED for commit.

I find this nothing short of scary that a grown bunch of people can't consider (or ignore) political points of view....that aren't even all that radical anymore!

Is there an "off-topic" section (like every other forum I visit)?

I called it right: C-Dorys are the baby-boomers boat of choice, and that's being hard on C-Dorys!

Just because you avoid reality doesn't mean it won't kick in your door eventually.

Will-C, nice sucker punch reply before locking it to rebuttle

One of the great things about this forum is the fact that it isn't like every other forum. Since you have LOTS of other options regarding where you can discuss political stuff (like every other forum you visit), take it there. It's pretty obvious, actually: that thread got locked down because politics can be divisive, and that's not what this forum is about.

Nothing sinister. Not "censoring". This is NOT a public forum, so consider getting the thread locked down a warning from the owners of the site. It's likely that this thread will get locked down, too, since discussing politics is your goal.

Come into my house and start a political discussion that will turn divisive, and I'd likely show you the door. We are all guests in this "house." Probably best to respect the site owners' simple rule of just being nice.

Until today I in fact did NOT know politics can't be discussed on c-brats.

Is it any wonder our country is circling the drain...we can't even talk about the problems!

I would like to mention: I've had several PMs sent from other brats saying "thanks for saying what can't be said here"

Don't worry, you're safe on the water (and home, and computer)

Yikes! Close call! a real subject was almost breeched.

Warning received. Thanks.

A far more intelligent person than I once wrote exactly what this site is for, and I quote:

"Believe me, my young friend, there is NOTHING--absolute nothing--half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing,' he went on dreamily: `messing--about--in--boats; messing----"

If you wish to mess with politics, please take it to a site where messing with politics is the goal, I prefer like Rat and Mole am here to talk boats.

Hey M&M,

The country does seem to be circling the drain. And you CAN talk about the problems (pick one of those "every other" sites)... and all that talk on all those sites doesn't seem to be making much difference.

The answer is simple: run for office. You CAN make a difference... but part of the problem with politics is: lots of people talking, no one doing. If you don't want to run for office, go help with any political campaign that you align with.

When you need a break from all the political yammering, feel free to come to this site for the friendly, welcoming discussion about C-Dorys that you'll find here.

Not every site on the internet is a free-for-all, where one gets to spout their own personal "manifesto." Take this site, for instance... it's about C-Dory boating. No one is forced to be here, but there are some expectations when you participate... like: play nice. Don't come here looking to start a brawl. Don't come here with the expectation that you will sway anyone to your way of thinking, especially regarding politics and religion (didn't your Momma teach you that when you were a kid?). Sometimes we get wild and crazy and talk about economics, because it is something that affects us all (and how we can continue to afford to play on the boat).

When I hear a politician proclaim: "A chicken in every pot, and a C-Dory at every dock," they will have my vote.

Don't be pissy. You learned something today. The most important lesson: there are still some places on the internet where "nice" is important.

Best wishes (really),
Jim B.

Miles and Miles,

The two people mentioned as 'owners' are Mike (Tyboo) and Bill (De Nag). These two people can lock threads, but I don't think Wil-C can.

The C-Brats do not do well with extremely controversial subjects. Those types of discussions have caused quite a 'disturbance in the force' here in the past, and the owners now act to limit or shut off those topics.

As was mentioned, we are here to discuss C-Dorys and boating. We Brats do that well. :wink

I'd have to go with Will-C on this one.

Folks on this site are very politically savvy and active. I would venture a guess that 50% of them don't agree with your brand of politics. Given a 50/50 mix of Blue/Red feelings, there's bound to be strong feelings and words. Why would I or anyone else want to alleniate some very dear friends that happen to vote differently than I every 2 years?

Discussing/arguing politics just doesn't fit in with the "Just be nice" policy.

There are a few here that try to interject their personal politics (I've done it too) but the majority appreciate the fact that the site does NOT engage in it. Why not save your politics for the sites that encourage political and personal fights such as THT and save your friendly boat discussions for this site?

I don't know what thread you are referring to (I did not read it) but this issue comes up from time to time. However folks wish to spin it, I think online political discussions - on a boating site - are an attempt to see who agrees with you and who doesn't and serves only to be divisive.

I would appreciate reading about your boating and C-Dory experiences though.

I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. In fact the only reason I locked the thread was because I saw the ruffling start. I did it from my phone without watching the video. I needed to see only the title and the first few replies to know that there would be endless replies flying in all directions and that many of them would be hurtful. I got caught up in a political discussion on here a few years back and was beat up pretty good for even letting it continue let alone being an antagonist myself. I'm a quick learner.

Disallowing these types of threads is not censorship or even a judgmental choice; it has been clearly shown to be preferred by nearly all the members. That's who we're here for.

You are welcome to use the PM feature we provide to continue the discussion with all those other brats who thanked you.

Hear hear Roger, thanks for expressing my sentiments exactly
Miles, please keep it about boats, thanks. Many may agree with your politics, but this is not a place to try to convince or change minds..

Am glad to hear that we are not like every other forum you visit.

There are no rules here, but rather an admonishment to "be nice".

Dictionary.com defines nice as:
"1. pleasing; agreeable; delightful: A nice visit.
2.amiably pleasant; kind: They are always nice to strangers.
"

Politics is hardly either of the above. By nature it is divisive, sometimes hurtful, and I believe that most of our community comes here to discuss what we have in common, not what divides us.

Off-subject posts really do not belong here, whether it is for Avon, Girl Scout Cookies, Burningman, or the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. It is not a measure of importance, but relevance. It should be noted that under the right circumstances, any of these could be relevant subjects, just not when posted on their own.

If you look at many of the threads in the Grand Adventures section of the website, you will see that many of them, including my own, have gaps of days, weeks, or months, in them. This isn’t because vacation stopped, or we weren't doing something very interesting, but because the activities going on were not relevant to this website.

There are plenty of places for you to have a personal blog, but this space is reserved for discussions on, of, or relating to C-Dorys.

I wish you pleasant journeys.

David

I live and breathe politics and have for longer than many of you have been alive. That said, I agree 100% with what JimB. and the others have said. This place is not reflective of the divisiveness of the political battles in this country. It is a place of sharing, and true mutual respect, virtues lacking in, if not totally absent from, today's politics. My hope is that these virtues will someday find their way into political discourse. Until that time I take some comfort in knowing that "we're all in the same boat...."

Nice statement Marty!! You mean we're not all "boomers"? I suppose there are some younger than that though. I think we've given this thread miles and miles more PR than it should have gotten. Say goodnight everyone!

If a view from north of the border could be accepted; I enjoy a forum centered on fellow boaters. I assume nobody is wanting to discuss Canadian or European politics for example.

I missed the original thread that started this and now I feel left out. If miles did something that got someone that mad, I probably agree with miles. That being said, I remember trolling this site before I got my C-Dory (during the Bush years), and found some of the most vile, irresponsible, and indefensible comments that went unchecked. It's all fun and games until you tell someone the truth that they won't listen to. I've posted my thoughts on huffington post and have been treated better there. It's only every now and then that I feel the need to push back on baseless chatter. Remember, freedom of speech is good until you're wrong. And finally, this is not my site, so they (whoever "they" are) can run it as they see fit. Just keep it about the boats and no one will get hurt. Miles, sorry to see you in the same boat as me but, I can tell you it's a much nicer ride in it.

Oh Jezz Jim, I feel so much smarter now (sorry, was that pissy?)

If you would have given the link half a chance, you would have found it WAS talking about economics. As in how the Federal reserve is actually a private bank hell bent on making sure we're all broke (instead of cruising around PNW) If I had been on a political kick I would have linked to something about RON PAUL

You have ZERO idea what kind of energy I put into changing the world.

I'll bet if what I posted wasn't so "extreme" (i.e. subverting the comfortable left/right split) a lot less hostility would have erupted.

I'm willing to leave all this alone, but hate getting sucker replied without a chance to counter.

And please remember: 99% of everything I reply or start here is boat related. I think I ask more shameless questions (as in I actually don't already know everything...already) than any other consistent member.

Lock it up!!!
