Salmon fishing in the salt - technique and methds

Ken, My only worry about doing what you are talking about when lowering the down rigger is it is putting wear on the drag washers. But with the large drag area on the Charter Specials I imagine that doesn't really matter. I've always free spooled my reels using my thumb to keep from backlashing...

How far would/did you drive for a C-Dory?

Well lets see. Fall City,WA to Portland Or, twice, one to look at the boat and then the second to pick it up for my Jet Sled. Then Fall City, to a small town north of Dallas, TX for the 27' about 4800 miles total. My son picked up the 27' for me as I couldn't take the time off work. On the way...

    Starting a cold kicker

My guess is that you have just a little bit of moisture in your fuel system and it is freezing the jets closed. Once it warms up the moisture doesn't freeze and the motor starts. I would pull the float bowl off and clean it out good. Then be sure to also clean up the jets real well and...

Salmon fishing in the salt - technique and methds

Warren, Here is a great write up on the Charter Special. They are very nice reels from everything I have read about them. BTW: Here is a great write up on how to service the Charter Special. Wow that thing has a large drag system! I'm still using my old Penn 209's for salmon as backup reels...

Salmon fishing in the salt - technique and methds

Ken, Actually, the Alvey is not a very common reel even in Canada. My reel (525-C52) works just like a normal reel, where it is NOT a knuckle buster. The spool will use the drag to let line out even while you are reeling. There is a lever to disconnect the drag for letting out the line while...

Salmon fishing in the salt - technique and methds

CAVU Ken, I use 50lb Power Pro braid with the Scotty releases. I like it for fishing out at Sekiu and Neah but don't like it as much in the sound. The reason being that the braid makes the "salad" harder to clean from the line. I still use the braid though. If you were to go down to 20lb braid...

    Advice on fish-finder

I've used both HumminBird and Lowrance for years. I've not had problems with either units. I will likely go with the Lowrance LCX series for my next unit as I like their ability to record both GPS and Sonar for playback later and I want at least a 6" screen. I really liked my old Humminbird...

    Wireless Laptop?

Last year I helped my friend move his stuff cross country. Since I have a Verizon Treo 700w, I downloaded PDANET and installed it on the Laptop and phone. Then I simply used my cell phone as the modem for the laptop at Verizon's typical speeds. Worked great and no extra phone charges other than...

    WA Ferry storm photos

While I agree with the Oh, Shit comment, I think that bird is actually a gull. It is a lot closer to the camera than you think as it is completely out of focus. And Gulls love to play in the wind. Ever watch them playing over the floating bridges when the wind is up? They'll hover right over the...

    New Diesel Outboard

I wonder what 3.0L diesel they are using. I found the Mercedes 3.0L V6 Turbo Diesel. It is rated at about 210 HP (when installed in the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee). The only other 3.0l diesels I found were offered by BMW(European only) and an Isuzu used in trucks. It is interesting that they are...

    Second seating...

Jim, I have that exact same seat on my little 13' fly fishing boat. I took the arm rests off as they get in the way when working with fly lines. ;) It is a very comfortable seat though. Here is a nice seat base that would provide a good suspension system for a seat. The cabinet top would need...

C-16' Cruiser, or Angler for fishing and touring around

Darrel, From what you put in your post it sounds like the 19' Angler would be a better boat. More room, just about as easy to handle, yet far more economical to run than the Trophy you posted about. And I THINK you would still be able to tow it with your Ranger. I don't think you would be...

    Underwater Camera

I'm amazed they used a Class A tow truck to pull that thing out of the water. That was one expensive bill to get it out of the water, plus I'm sure they ended up paying for the "oil spill" as well. OUCH. When I used to drive tow trucks we used to charge $150 to just fire up the Class A, then an...

    Tune Up question

For what its worth, there is no way I would do the oil changes with the boat in the water. Too much risk of oil spill or water intrusion from a rogue wave. So, since that is the case, may as well do the tune up at the same time when you have the boat out of the water.

    Underwater Camera

Yeah they are. I keep hoping to find a deal on the Walker system but haven't come across anything cheap enough that I want to spend the money for it. Maybe this winter I will be able to figure out how to make the camera I have work so I can modify my downriggers to work with it. The camera...
