07/16 - 07/18 - Blakely Island

East of EQ is the right one. Ain't no west one that you would want to use!! Can't go wrong using the one Mike uses. He's always right.

Dusty

Thanks Dusty for the information. Looks like I won't have to drive in circles trying to find the right spot. For that you win a shot of brown from the Lynn Marie stash. See you at the bay.

A minor word of caution RE the Cornet Bay launch...

The last two times I parked/launched there, I returned to a ticket on my windshield - even though I'd paid the correct launch and parking amount. In fact, when I left my rig there for Lopez, I over-paid; thought I would be there an extra day. They still ticketed me.

Both times, it was resolved with a friendly chat at the ranger station, although neither time was an explanation provided as to why the ticket was left. Still, I'll only write a check there from now on so I have proof of payment.

Maybe they're kinder to Oregonians and Washintonians than us CA folk...

Bill,

You better leave some extra again. With that new tow rig those folks will want launch fees, parking fees, and a fee for that fancy camper/van looking rig. They may also figure that the only way you can afford the fuel to dive up there to go boating is to cheat the government.
Thanks for the warning though as I'll use a check too.

Okay fellow Brats and Brattetts, have just arrived
Wed. on Guemes with one of the kegs of beer. Our summer seasonal cleverly named "Summer Beer". I'll have ten bucks into ice just keeping it iced for two more days in the garage. Thinks I need yet another refer that will hold a keg.
Bought a second crab pot today with 100 feet of lead-line and float. Lost one last year, so was down to one. Will be bringing some crab along on Friday to cook when I arrive.

The elusive Kate is joining us on Sat. I need to run back to Guemes on Sat noonish to get her.

When coming over on the Guemes ferry this afternoon there was a thick fog bank on Rosario Strait. I am heading out about noon on Fri. Scanning 16 and 68. May be looking for someone with radar to tag along with.

Bummer, Bummer, Bummer,
Rick just got home and said he had some major problems on a huge new project he has just started and we won't be able to get over to Blakely as planned. I even dropped the dog off at the boarding kennel today. It's 100 degrees right now and I was really hopeing to cool off in the San Juans. Will miss all you guys. Save us some beer for next time. When is next time? Guess someone else can have C-5. Boo hoo. :cry
Pat

We've got the champagne ready for our christening at Blakely this weekend. Got the name on the boat today, so we are ready to go whenever you are Rev Jim!

Scott, Laurie, and Winston

Pat and Rick, sorry to hear that. We're at least 20 degrees cooler over here, and that's not even counting iced beer cleverly named Summer Ale. You kids be sure to make the next gig, okay? Of course, by then it's likely we'll have in place a fresh dress code we'll need to respect.

Roger, it's just not the same when you and Lisbeth aren't there. Now I'm not sure I want to go. Is there something I can do? What's your boss' phone number?

Would one of you early birds tell Lyle and Shelley that I'll be at Blakely Saturday morning with their outboard from E.Q.

And please tell Mike (TyBoo) I just missed him at Cornet. Now that guy gets up early. I thought sure the fog would make him sleep an extra hour or two... visit in Blakely.

Dusty

Dusty,

What time do you plan on pulling out of the bay? We may get in late tomorrow evening and lay over till Sat. A.M. to depart. If so we wouldn't mind some of your local knowledge. Rumor is that you hold quite a number of shares of the stuff. Always say if you have to learn, learn from the best.
As for TyBoo Mike getting up early I've only beat him once. That was the day he brought the old TyBoo 22 up to you and I came along. As I recall I got up and hour early cause I forgot we were going off daylight savings time.
See you on the water,
Tim

Your time is my time, Tim.

Thought I might put a couple of crab pots out tomorrow so I could bring some to Blakely (If'n I don't get robbed overnight).

Sooo - if I pull the pots early I could be ready to leave around 9:30. (That's ayem)... but I can sure adjust my time to fit. Only advantage I know to being retired.

Happy to cruise with ya,

Dusty

Tim,

Sorry to miss you... my schedule got messed up a little. Took the motor and some crab to Blakely, but had to get home to help Mrs. Dusty navigate around the house. She's doing much better now.

Dusty

Blakley, good.
Got up to washington park about 9:30 Thursday night and boated over to Blakley. Had a great time cruising and visiting with folks...even got to see some whales.
Thanks to the beer guys fer da beer and the C-Puffin crew for the hats and everybody else.
Twas kind of a bummer to haul up to the Sound and not get to chat with Roger, DaveS, Dusty and the rest of the Sound crew that didn't make it.
Later

Wonderful week-end at Blakely. Thanks go to many boat people. Bill on Da Nag for the wonderful Lattes each morning. I think we should start an espresso bean fund for him. It was great to meet Dave from New Hampshire who just picked up his new 22 and spent Friday afternoon and night with us. Had three reps from C-Dory there including the "Big Kahuna" who came in a new little 14 foot c-dory. Scott and Laurie with the new C-Puffin is also with C-Dory. I am thinking a 25 may be in the works in a year or so. Kate does also, so that pretty much cinches it.

Had a great cruise on Sat. up over the north end of San Juan Is. and down the west side. Ran into a pod of 60-80 Orca whales that where quite awesome to watch. One did a spy-hop where he came straight up vertical out of the water about 1/3 his length. I think that is what you call it.

Took a picture and was going to add it here but the computer genie won't let it out of the bottle. Will try to post it alone.

OR I'll edit this one and put it here after all.

Nice picture David........damn, I'm getting cherry bombed, but the lingering effects of the Bess-C's contribution are worth it...gotta run :)

Fabulous weekend, bonus weather, great Saturday day cruise - we FINALLY go to see some serious whales! - wrapped up with a wonderful potluck as usual...we are so jealous of those of you for whom this was only the start of more San Juan / Gulf Island cruising!

What I learned, Lesson 1 - digital camera is WORTHLESS WORTHLESS WORTHLESS for trying to get pictures of whales. ALL I have is pictures of holes in the water where whales used to be...Next time I am bringing the trusty old Nikkormat film camera (vintage 1970), it has never let me down.

What I learned, Lesson 2 - AVOID Twin Bridges (the County Park, not the marina) like the plague when it is busy - if there are fewer than four boat trailers in the parking lot (like it usually has been for the six months or so we have been using it), great - otherwise, RUN. Launching, what a disaster. I think if Lyle and Shelly had not been there, Patty would still be standing on the float...Retrieval was not much better - the ONLY way to get a boat out there was to land a person away from the float to go get the trailer to get in line - if you wanted to wait until a float was free to pull in and then stroll up and get your trailer, you would still be circling...

All in all the fun parts though outweighed the frustrations!

Another fabulous time with my water mates. Someone counted 20 boats this weekend, and we know at least five more wanted to but couldn't be there. It's always so nice to see everyone again, talk about our boats and our lives, and share easy laughter.

Thanks for everything, C-Nuts, you're the greatest.
:male (Insert group hug here.)

Sure hated to miss that one. Only there long enough to leave a motor for Lyle and some crab for the crabless ones. Mrs. Dusty doing a whole lot better - thanks for the phone calls.

Pat, there are lots of digital cameras shutters that are fast enough -- mine is faster than my 35 Nikons... but those black 'n' white rascals do move fast, and the trigger finger has gotta be ready!

Mike, missed you again... I'll drive down that way fer a visit.

Dusty
