2016 Cruising Plans

Hi Jay and JoLee,
We looked at your photos and recognized so many places. One was one of my favorite fishing spots. I hope you were fishing. Your photos stopped with whales around Port Armstrong and I was wondering if you ever made it to P.A. We love it down here and there is a lot of big water by that Cape O. We had forecast seas of 36' a couple days ago. You can wait for a while to get around sometimes. We are going to leave our dory in Juneau until May and bring her over with our truck, on the ferry to Sitka. We'll run down from Sitka on the outside if the weather is good. Hopefully we'll see you in P.A

Kevin & Karen, our photos of Port Alexander are in this C-Brat photo album, titled " Alaska inside Passage 2010", page 2 of our 2010 Southeast Alaska cruise out of Skagway. http://www.c-brats.com/modules.php?set_ ... php&page=2

This is the link to my write up of that cruise with some photos included of Port Alexander & many other places. http://www.c-brats.com/viewtopic.php?t= ... sc&start=0

I also checked out your website & really liked it. A fishing & adventure lover would be hard pressed to beat a trip with you. In 2010 we were treated extremely well by the folks at the Laughing Raven Lodge. They were especially helpful in the picking of the right conditions to round Cape Ommaney for run to Sitka.

As we continue to plan our 2016 voyage north to Alaska, we have another couple that would like to join us. They have a 26 Osprey and have had Alaska on their bucket list. When they heard of our plans they called to ask if they could tag a long. "The more the merrier!" We will have a few planning dinners after the new year along with the other couple that will join us for the BC portion. Looks like we will have a small flotilla. We are looking forward to sharing the experience.
We would still like to hear the cruising plans of others for the upcoming season.

I don't have dates yet, but I am definitely planning on Fish & Chips at Port Harvey on Cracroft Island in the Broughtons. I really think it would be fun to have a CBRAT meet up (would that be a CBGT?) at Port Harvey at some point. George has great food, even gluten free, and you cal call in you menu selection on the radio for take out. :thup :thup

We have not stopped at Port Harvey...yet. It's on our radar for this cruise. I'm looking forward to those cinnamon rolls. Maybe we'll meet some brats there.

One of the problems with the Broughtons, is that there are too many lovely anchorages, and "resort" camps. Each has a wonderful charm and speciality. We stopped at the occasional place on our way up and down to AK--but then in the C Dory spent a month just exploring the Broughtons!
(One of the problems with the Inland Passage, is that there are too many great places to explore!

Bob is right, there are so many great places to stop. In my case, I just had to stop and visit at Port Harvey, buy a Tee Shirt or cap, and just found out the food was exceptional as a bonus.

Also found out that there is a bonus if you bring a pair of Red Shoes to their restaurant.

Harvey,

When we trailered into Canada, they treated the boat just like a travel trailer. The first time we insisted on a clearance number, which was a long process. The next time, we just kept on going. No-one has ever asked to see a clearance no.

Boris, From what I have learned, getting a clearance number when trailering across take time because it is not the process the Customs people at the drive across boarder know. The are acquainted with stamping a Passport. When I crossed, I just put a yellow sticky note in my passport asking for the stamp, for verification for Canadian Coast Guard. It might have added 1-2 minutes to my crossing time, which was less than 5 minutes total.

I highly recommend that. It is easy, quick and could save some time should you become involved with the CGC at some point.

Happy Travels,

Harvey

I took last summer off to tend to some family stuff but I'll back at my duty post next summer. I'll keep a friendly eye out for all you that are headed for Elfin Cove. .....that damn place, it's like a prison labor camp but I can't stay away

This year we did the Inside Passage from Vancouver, BC to Petersburg, AK.
One of the many bonuses of owning a CD22 is that we can keep it stored (shrinkwrapped) for only $50/mo in Alaska and not return next year. Instead we'll head back to Alaska in 2017.

Full retirement for my wife in 2016, sold the cottage, selling the house, heading to Europe for 3 months, living/traveling on our Winnebago View in between traveling throughout the world, cruising on our CD22 and volunteering where we can.

Can't wait to get going...

When taking the boat to Prince Rupert, we have not gotten a Clearance number. Just the passport. Boating in, it is essential to have the clearance number.

I would submit that it is no more important to have a clearance number when boating in than trailering in, but it is a whole lot easier to get that clearance number when boating than trailering. When driving across, it is simple to get the passport stamped if an explanation for need id given.

I doubt it will make any difference to the Canadian Coast Guard which way you get the number. In the absence of that number, a stamped passport legitimizes your presence in Canadian waters.

Ken., We will see you in the cove. Save some fish for us.
Robert..looking forward to hearing your travel stories. Do you take your boat out of the water in Petersburg? Where is it stored? We haven't been there since the new docks were installed.
This trip we are happy to be able to take our time. We also installed a hydronic heating system that should make the trip a lot drier. Still want to insulate the berth/cave.

Hi Gene,

Yep, we had the boat pulled in Petersburg - I believe it is Petersburg Marine. They came down to the ramp with a trailer and pulled the boat. Now sitting on the hard shrink-wrapped.

Outside of the non-stop rain, Petersburg was a nice place to end our trip. In 2017 we'll take it farther north and maybe bring the truck/trailer to bring it back down - but still undecided on that plan.

Have a great day.

Robert

I just saw on FB that Port Harvey had a major setback Nov.25 when their barge sank. They hope to be in business for the 2016 cruising season. We will be sure to stop there and buy lots of cinnamon rolls.

Gene, any chance you can copy that info from Face Book into the CBRATS. I will be looking for it on the web but do not have a FaceBook account. (No, not likely to start one for this either.)

Here's a post from Trawler Forum:

On November 25 the barge supporting the main building - office, store, and the upstairs Red Shoe Restaurant - failed and most of the building sank. The 73 year old barge was uninsurable. Everyone is fine, and George & Gail have indicated that they will rebuild. A real setback, as they have worked hard for a decade to build up the business in a challenging environment. We wish them luck.

The Port Harvey Marina is a great stopover when arriving at or departing from the Broughtons from the south.

On 25th November Port Harvey suffered a major setback when our barge suffered a catastrophic damage causing it to sink. We are in the process of cleaning up the mess and trying to salvage whatever we can. Given the age of the barge (73 years) it was not able to be insured which while being a setback will not stop Gail and I from continuing on and making sure we have the Red Shoe functioning in the 2016 season. At the moment we are concentrating on the issues at hand and then will sit down and make a plan for the future which we will share with all our friends here. Gail and I feel that we have our health so this is only a set back that can be dealt with.

I just put a new thread "Port Harvey Marine Resort - Setback" up here

and it has a link to the Port Harvey Marine Resort Face Book page.
