Alaska Bulkhead on a 16' Cruiser?

I'm curious if anyone has installed an Alaska bulkhead on a 16' cruiser. I realize that the cockpit space is limited, so a sliding door (or doors) might work better than the single hinged door found on a 22' C-Dory.

I assume you mean a canvas bulkhead that snaps in place with windows and a zipper down the center? Patty made one for Crabby Lou, and it is great. I don't seem to have any photos of it though.

Hi Pat,
I was thinking in terms of a "hard" bulkhead (marine plywood or MDO plywood) with fixed windows. I recall that one of the NW C-brats built an "aftermarket" hard bulkhead for his 19' angler.

That was Joe on R-Matey. There is a substantial difference in available space between a 16 and a 19. There are pictures in the R-Matey album.

Joe's hard bulkhead on R-Matey was the cat's meow for sure, but our soft bulkhead on Crabby Lou is pretty slick too. Unfortunately, we are in Fall City and Crabby Lou is in Birch Bay, but your question made me realize I need to have a couple of pix of it in our album. We use the Alaska bulkhead when we want to lock out the weather without putting up the camperback. We run a Mr. Heater Buddy sometimes, and it is really scumpo in the cabin with the soft bulkhead!

I had what an "Alaskan Curtain" (at least that is what I was told it was called) on Sweet Pea. It came with the vessel, and went with her when I sold her. It snapped in place, zipped down the middle, and rolled up if desired.

There is a picture of it in my album, but it is a picture with the curtain/bulkhead rolled up. I will see if I have any pictures with it fully closed.

Hey Leo- I'm glad you started this thread as it gives me a chance to post this picture of the Lizzie. It was taken about 5 years ago when you and I went for a cruise on Lake Washington. I really like the canvas "Alaskan bulkhead". Like Pat says, with a Buddy heater it keeps it cozy on the coldest days and has the added safety advantage of air circulation underneath when the door is zippered closed.

Like Pat says, with a Buddy heater it keeps it cozy on the coldest days and has the added safety advantage of air circulation underneath when the door is zippered closed.

I have the same set-up on Mas Que Nada. Someday when I get a photo album, I'll post pictures.

I have thought about making a three-piece glass-skinned foam bulkhead that would be removable. The advantages would be a bit of security and noise reduction. For weather protection, the canvas one works great.

This one came with our 16. We also had a full camperback. We really enjoyed this boat. All the canvas made it very liveable. The snap-in bulkhead reduced the engine noise by about 25%.
