I got a tidbit of information about launch ramp closings here in So. Calif. I went to various marina websites to see the status on launch ramps, some mentioned them, some didn't. Channel Islands ramp status was missing. So I called the suggested number and talked to a very nice young lady. She said that ramp just closed a few days ago. She said all ramps were about 50/50 open/closed for many weeks, then decision was made to close all. I asked why would trailer boaters be prohibited from launching and spending days/weeks at a remote island (no landing), seems like the perfect social distancing scenario. She agreed, then said that she had heard that some people were abusing the ability to go boating by inviting more than just their sequestered family on board, a chance to party/socialize.

Unconfirmed, but seems right. They are having a similar problem with live-in boaters having people join them on their boats to socialize. Marinas are still working on that one, at least around here.

In my lifetime those epidemics are once every ten years. Often enough that we need a beefed up public health system at the ready. And that doesn't include polio.
 
Looking at the materials, it begs the question if the rapid response of social media is responsible for the reactions, which would have taken months in part societies? Of course the amount and rapidity of travel both domestic and international intensified the spread.
 
This is an unfair apples and oranges comparison given the increases in medicine and technology and in fact minimizes and discounts the 100,000 deaths already claimed by Covid 19.

Fascinating.......I wish I could see the the exact same graphic, but with the numbers being the percentage of the population that died at the time instead of absolute numbers of fatalities.

I've been pestering our local officials about this. Santa barbara waterfront director wanted to stay open but couldn't be the only open ramp in the state; too much influx of outoftowners. I tried to change the ind of the city council to no avail.
 
Not arguing with anyone. Just offering other perspectives. If we’ are going to destroy the economy and our way of life, we should question everything. Here is another perspective I’ll share for the sake of discussion.

The Chinese virus is not outside your door waiting to pounce on you. It is not falling from the sky.
This is an enormous country. 99% of it does not have a serious problem with the disease.
Nearly every hospital in the nation is bleeding money, (especially your community hospitals) because they can’t function when people don’t show up. A very small amount of hospitals are dealing with serious problems. These are almost all in insanely densely populated areas. I pray for them and understand their dilemma. This is not, however, the norm.

This brings me to my main point.

I have been dealing with infectious diseases in animals for a long time. Outside your door is the most amazing natural healing environment that could ever be conceived. Warm sunshine to bolster your immunity and supercharge your vitamin D production; a breeze to disperse and dilute organisms and further expose them to UV ray destruction; and a chance to uplift your spirit and well-being in the enjoyment of this beautiful world our God has created.

I cringe when I read that people who test positive for the Chinese virus are told to stay inside for 2 weeks. If I have a group of calves that I believe has been exposed to a contagious infectious disease, the LAST thing I’m going to do is close them up in a barn. Talk about a perfect environment for incubating and protecting a virus! Am I going to turn them out in my herd? Of course not. But I’m damn sure going to treat them as appropriate and then get them out into Mother Nature’s healing center.

People, you have to start thinking for yourselves, here. Most of you aren’t thinking at all! (That’s how sheep act, and that’s another discussion.)

If you’re exposed to the virus, or if you think you are, or if you just don’t know or care, trust me. Locking yourself and your family inside a house is going to stress you (because your going to be watching one of your indoctrination devices and bickering with each other). It’s going to deprive you of healing and nurturing sunlight and optimal oxygen levels. And your immune system will get weaker, not stronger.

Here’s the big one: I heard this term weeks ago and your ever-honest and upfront media has since swept it under the rug.

“Herd Immunity” This will be the ultimate “cure” for this problem. Now of course your “experts” want you to believe that if you “hide out” until Bill Gates’ company can produce a vaccine, you’ll all get it and your wonderful government will have saved you. Bull 💩!

How does vaccination work, in theory? You get a dose of a weakened or altered or drastically reduced amount of the organism in question and your body (if you have a healthy immune system) creates an antibody response which offers some level of immunity to the disease. Simple, but accurate.

Here’s the “shocker.” This already happening for many of us. But not for those of you that are holed up in your “safe space.” Even in New York City, far more people are being naturally vaccinated against this disease than are getting sick. This is true - even in New York City - for almost every healthy person who has a passing exposure to the diluted organisms that might be blowing in the wind at the moment.

This is why this “curve” crap works itself out and why virtually no models are correct. It’s left out of every calculation.

Now, if you’re a 76-year-old smoker, should you go to Manhattan and lick door knobs? Of course not. But to think that healthy people, especially in less densely populated areas should stay in the house or not go to work or anywhere else is asinine.

I’m not staying home. Am I avoiding crowds? Yes. Am I taking reasonable precautions? Of course. Am I wearing a mask? Hell no! I believe and understand the germ theory. I’ve made a living from it. We don’t have to be bubble children, folks. God designed us better than that.

If you’re immunocompromized, use logic. If you’re ill, take proper precautions. If you’re elderly or a smoker or don’t think you’re healthy, live accordingly. But for the overwhelming number of the rest of us, please think and reason. This isn’t the Armageddon.

It’s time to wake up. “Experts” want to you to buy into mathematic models. Friends, this isn’t math. It’s biology. It’s time to get outside and live in joy and thanksgiving, not in fear.

I agree, sunshine and fresh air is probably the best for us. However, beyond that, I don't know who Greg Buenger is. I'd just as soon take my advice from the trained experts with experience. Herd Immunity? Is that like herd mentality? So much information out there. Some of it is based on facts, some of it on bullcrap, and some of it somewhere in between. Me? I'm trying to keep my distance from others, while still trying to enjoy nature around me. Today is a lot different than a decade or a century ago. Folks are more mobile and also packed in like sardines in places. I've seen the seasonal flu bug move like wild fire, mostly due to kids still going to school sick and parents still going to work sick. I think we all know the answer on how to stop that. (Better individual responsibility and better work rules.) Just my two cents worth. Colby
 
I'm sure those that have died from Covid 19, their relatives and friends, those that will die from Covid 19 in the future and particularly those that will unnecessarily die because of the herd immunity concept do not consider themselves a part of or want to be included in the "herd".

Sweden is currently testing that concept. We shall see........
 
I'm lucky that I can hide out on my Alberta Bison Ranch. Life is pretty much normal here, I only go to town once every 7 to 10 days to buy milk and a few other items. I should be on Vancouver Island now, enjoying the green and spring sunshine instead of the snow that doesn't want the end. If I lived in a big city in an apartment, with high population density, shopping malls, public transit, Starbucks the story would be much different. Your chances of catching C-19 would be much higher. Our little town of 9,000 people only has 2 reported cases now. But they are asking city slickers to stay home and now go for a Sunday drive to visit the small towns. We have a much older population and it is the seniors that are dying quickly.

So far we are lower on the scale of infections in Canada than in the US. More people died in NY yesterday that have died in total in Canada. There are a few hotspots such in Quebec, Toronto and Vancouver. If you live in Manitoba your chances to far are pretty good. The First Nations are in total lockdown, especially the remote fly in communities in the north. If C-19 were to get into these communities the outcome could be devastating.

I agree if you have the possibility of fresh air, sunshine, exercise while social distancing, then you are one of the lucky ones. But half of the worlds population lives in dense cities where this is not possible even in good times. So quarantine is the only option for these people. Just be glad that you don't live in New york, Madrid, Millan or Hong Kong.

Making fun of or to not recognize the importance & scientific validity of herd immunity is just plane posing as ignorant & that is being nice. It’s what most vaccines, especially those that are only partially effective are trying to accomplish in protecting from a transmittable virus. We would all be better off to get this over more quickly if in the process it didn’t overload our healthcare system. Eventually in order to actually stop not delay it, enough people must acquire it to stop its spread (herd immunity) or a vaccine developed to accomplish the same effect. What’s left is the faint hope the virus mutates to be less potent, drugs are developed to successfully overcome its danger, or it just goes away on its own (similar to sars & highly unlikely). All the measures we are doing now is having a similar affect as herd immunity or a vaccine as it is successfully reducing to a extreme degree it’s spread, but these measures are not stopping its spread instead just delaying it at the high cost of much destruction to our economy. If that destruction becomes bad enough the resulting poverty & its effects could possibly be worse than what the virus would do if left unchecked. Hopefully decisions will be made for a medium course that will mitigate both the virus & economy damage to us all. I have heard this expressed by the health experts that the President has gathered to explain what we as a nation are up against very clearly.

In the meantime JoLee & I are fortunate to live in Wyoming with its only 239 cases & zero deaths. We take long walks every day & every couple days a drive through beautiful mountain country with the snow rapidly receding. In between I’m working on the boat preparing it for the big & small adventures to come & looking forward to being in the same room with children & grandchildren again.

Seems to make some sense, Greg Buenger, except:

Not everyone lives in the "wide open spaces". The key to stopping spread "is" to
isolate and avoid contact w/others especially in areas of high population density.
This is where a novel virus replicates easiest. These are the current world's "hot
spots", not the open rolling hills of cattle country. Simply fact.

By using "Chinese Virus" for COVID-19, you demonstrate divisiveness rather than
unity which is a poor prescription, doctor, promoting further misunderstanding
and intolerance of those perhaps unlike yourself. Hardly what this country needs
on top of a pandemic.

We are all in this one together; one species, one planet.

Our local naval shipyard, 25K workers and service people on site, is planning on going from most people working, to just about all people. Monitoring, testing, masks, sick and administrative leave are expected to continue to keep all people healthy. Most of us are expecting it to work. It can be done. The example they are setting should be followed throughout the nation.

The carrier about to leave, you likely have read about it, had one crew member get the virus before he reported for duty, he was never on the ship, and one other person not confirmed after several days. There is not a problem at this point, but ...... and its a big one - how do you keep the virus spreading on a huge ship with even huger population, and living in very close quarters.

Our county, just miles on the edge from Seattle has had less than 135 confirmed cases, and just one death. We don't know the story behind that but we have taken a certain pride in being uber prepared. I miss the gym and friends and relatives, but have taken up street running - and enjoying seeing neighborhoods, coves, mini-parks I never knew were in my home town.
