B10 and Pacific Salmon - 2005

Yo boss,I'm going to try to scare up a crew for Sunday on through the week. It does look like dung for Friday and Saturday but Sunday it does look nice.
Is the river kicking anything out yet?

Who want's to help man the kill deck? if interested, shoot me an e-mail and phone number

Looks like we might get out there around Tuesday, stay as much of the rest of the week as we can find moorage or hotel room...look for the unmarked spanky new 22'er ... we'll keep our eyes out for you! Doubt we'll be crossing the bar at this point....taking the sea trial Saturday when we pick it up...putting it on Foster Lake for a couple days of getting used to it time :-) Then out there for some bloodyin' up of the boat (we hope).

Wow I wish I'd had the time to check this board more thoroughly yesterday..! I just took a openseat w/ an old friend for Sunday and missed Ken's post - dang. :sad

I know you'll have no problem Ken, with the well diserved rep of a great captain and your well appointed boat someone'll jump at the chance (but don't forget the donuts :teeth )

Didn't get to Bouy 10 but Judy and I got the first salmon in the boat today. We were trolling red and white spinners up in the area around the Skipanon. Got one hooked up that pulled too hard for the tightness I had on the drag or something and he/she broke off at the spinner and we were left with a memory of what could have been. I replaced the spinner and a 150 yards later we were hooked up again and this time we landed a nice native 30" Chinook. The fish checker at the dock told Judy it was likely some of the Rouge River stock released at Young's Bay in the net pens. We had one good take down so salmon fishing is on and sturgeon is now over. It's a good thing too cause all we got fishing sturgeon this morning was an empty bait bucket and a bunch of little crabs.

The spinners I was using are homemade with a half white and half red blade. Gave one to TyBoo Mike for Christmas so maybe he will hook it up and get lucky.

Yeah, I saw that fish of Tim's. Nice one, but I think 29 pounds is a little more accurate guess on the weight. Those Rogue River brights or reds as my partner calls them are supposed to be really good eating fish. I have that Christmas Spinner laying right next to the keyboard and will give it a try tomorrow.

This morning we took off before daylight and ran in the fog to about a mile past B2. The ocean was just about what they had said it would be with 3 x 3 at 6 seconds, and the fog was getting thicker instead of clearing, so we pulled the gear in after less than half an hour and headed back. Foggy all the way.

On the way out, I even got lost once. I slowed way down for some reason, and the GPS took a little bit to respond, so we made us a small circle and actually trusted the compass to get back in line with the buoys. Dusty would have been proud. We were between the ship channel and Clatsop Spit - both places to avoid when you can't see - so I did feel a lot better when I caught sight of the next buoy and it was where it is supposed to be. I kept telling my crew not to worry about anythng, because I used to have radar. It is great to have in the river bacause it makes it so easy to stay parallel to shore, not to mention letting you know when you can enter the ship channel. Have to get it back on before next season.

We heard one guy call the CG saying he was lost in the fog. He said he thought he was 5 miles south of the CR entrance, but had no GPS. The CG asked his water depth and he replied 22 feet. He was awfully close to the beach, and I would be surprised if he couldn't at least hear the breaking surf. Spooky. He was still talking to the CG when we tied up at the dock. I hope they found him in time.

Back at it tomorrow. I have a little greener crew, so I probably won't head outside if the fog is as thick as today. But if we can see, the swell predictions are a little more favorable. Maybe I'll just follow Tim around.

Nice fish Tim, way to start off your season..
Helluva tale Mike.
Fog arg, I started out Sunday morning and it was thick, we turned around and waited untill noon to fish the river. With the Knotty C crew aboard, we got one to the boat but not on the boat. There was a whale playing around at bouy 11 for the longest time, about 50 yrds away from us, we quickly tied on some cut plug sea lion for bait but no luck. Also saw a new looking, green, 25 footer, anybody we know?. We ventured out in the ocean for a bit on Monday and fished around the CR, one in the bag and one to the boat, ran into the the green 25 footer out there also...I told D & D that if one spots a C-Dory you should always troll towards it cuz they set up a harmonic vibration that attracts fish, it didn't work...anyhoots had a great time & and I think even though the fishing action was slow, the Knotty C crew may be addicted to salmon fishing now cuz they where headed to Englunds supply as they left the boat :)

HEY Tim, do you use a flasher or dodger when you're running spinners? inquiring minds want to know. I've got to try to add more hardware to my inventory.
I have an appointment with the spinn doctor, the spin master, the Icelandic Spintastic later in the week and hope to get lernt up properly.

Hi B~C,

My spinner set up that seems to catch the best is one of those divers with the plastic foil feathers that come off the points and are about an inch wide. Behind that I put another 8 feet of leader to the spinner. My favorite is a red and white tee spoon but green and white or yellow is the dark day back-up. I drag that same spinner around behind a down rigger too and have caught fish also but on the down rigger I don't use anything else. Don't believe you'd want to much side action etc. on those spinners but hey, never tried it.

That diver was one that worked really well last year with bait, and whatever behind it. No side motion just the gentle flutter of the plastic/foil strips. Works for me anyway.

Tim

Tim, thanks for the info, looks like I'll be trying one of them fancy divers. Between this crazy weather and the price of fuel, I may be fishing the river a little more often.

Our thanks to B~C for a wonderful time Sunday and Monday. I'm definitely "hooked", pardon the pun! We did go directly to Englund Supply as soon as we got off the boat to pick up a few more things for our bag of tricks. :) and I can't wait to get out there again.

Thanks, Ken, for the great lesson.

Dee

What's this, Ken AND the Fish Whisperer together? Sounds like a teachers conference to me. Nothing but some sort of boone dogle on the publics monies.

Tim

When I was down to the dock checking out the new CatyMae, on a whim I stopped by to look at my own boat. There in the back, sitting on the cooler, was a brand new teaspoon style spinner with a rainbow blade. I don't know which Cannon Beach Building Inspector might have put it there, but I sure would like to thank him. It is just like the one I lost on the crab pot last weekend (well, real close - it doesn't have the ladybug sticker on the back).

Thanks!

OK,
I'm ready to hit the dock at O-Darkthirty. Everything is ready to go, thermos, breakfast Hot Pockets, and Lady Bug stickers. Should be a good day.

The spin Doc, Jr Buckwheat & I found the fishing to be poor in the river the last few days. We ventured outside to play around the CR for a bit one day but no luck....I fear my fishing MoJo has left. It was a foggy dog. We did see a few C-brats out and about.....and had a durn good time inspite of the poor fishing.....best of luck to youz this weekend

Today's the day we should have gone, it looks like. The reports sound flat calm - 1 wind wave, 3 swell at 14 seconds. The Ilwaco channel can get rougher than that. Right now, this very minute, we could be rowing across the CR bar. But, no, I am staying home this weekend. Lazy today and busy tomorrow. Just as well - if Lyle can't catch 'em, they ain't gonna get caught. Then on the other hand, I just saw Lynn Marie on here. They must have limited the boat and got home early. Starting next Sunday, I am fishing for a week.

Mike, you lucky guy...we're envious of you fishing for a week! By that time, the river should pick up. We're glad we got to meet you...and Tim and Judy...nice waving -- Hope we get to meet and chat soon. We really lucked out this week -- we didn't fish Wednesday as this was our travel day, first time to solo launch and drive the boat. Steve saved it from a wind-driven bounce on the bridge as he pulled it off the trailer (he said the only thing he thought was he didn't want to hear what I might say if he bashed it :smile)

We fished Thursday and got nada -- saw about 3 netted. Friday, we fished alllllll day, only saw a couple netted. Steve had wanted to come in around 3 but I told him please, no, we're going to catch a fish. Most everyone had gone in and about 5 - 5:30 we hooked a coho at 35 pulls on a red and white and a chinook at 9 pulls on cut plug...go figure!

Friday morning...back out and I picked up a chinook just off Chinook a ways, and nothing more for the day.

The boat was great! We had a battery issue from running all kinds of stuff we shouldn't (cooler and fan), but recovered as soon as we turned on the start battery and ran the motor for awhile. Steve's doing great at docking and loading and unloading -- we're rookies, but no dings, no dents ... so far :smile

Now to do a search on this site to see how to get that deck clean! We tried 409 both inside and cockpit, but that doesn't seem to get it done....

We plan to go back next Saturday for a day trip (can't stay cuz we gotta work -- we had a discussion about that this morning -- we both wished we didn't have to come home today and go back to work). What a great trip!
