C-Dory Advantage

I am not sure your going to get to many people to talk you out of it.
There is a lot of information on this site about the performance, handling of these boats. What you are going to use your boat for is a big consideration. All boats are a compromise including a C-Dory.
 
Where do you live? Where do you plan to boat? What kind of boating do you want to do? C-Dorys are probably not too good a choice for water skiing in Florida or hosting a party for 12 on Lake Shasta, but they are great for 12 month cruising in the San Juans or on the Chesapeake Bay or fishing in Oregon, and so forth...you have to tell us a bit more. Plus, don't you already know?:lol::lol: A lot of us just knew when we say our first C-Dory, I know Patty and I did...

I'm planning on boating primarily in the Great Lakes. I live on Muskegon Lake which is connected to Lake Michigan. I want a boat to take trips around the Great Lakes as well as just enjoy hanging around my home on Muskegon Lake. I'd love to test a C-Dory but I haven't seen one anywhere around here. Why aren't there more of these boats in the Midwest? What would be a good way to experience a C-Dory firsthand? I'm thinking about purchasing a 25' Cruiser.
 
Before you spend 80-90K for the finished product spend a long week-end and 1/2K airfare to the Pacific NW and attend a C-Dory event. (Or anywhere else for that matter). There would be several boats there that would love to take you out.
 
For less than that you should be able to get a round-trip flight to Manchester, NH and test drive both the 22 and 25 in Lake Winnipesaukee.
We'll even pick you up at the airport!
The C-Dory is even better up close.

People on Lake Superior really like C-Dorys. I know of five boats just in the bay. It would make and does make a fine Great Lakes boat. We use it for Island trips and fishing. I'm going to try and keep it water ready until Ice. Dealers in Superior and Sister Bay not to sure if Sister Bay is still a dealer. Look me up if you want a ride on a rebuilt 22'.

There are probably more C-Dorys in Michigan that you would think, I know of several. Please check the "Our C-Dorys " section of this website. I have been up to Muskegon Lake a few times with mine and have some pictures of the harbor entrance in my photo album. I have had my boat in most of the Great Lakes and am more than pleased at it performance. It is not a 35 foot Tiara, but then I never expected it to be. The great thing about it is that I can trailer it to a distance port and explore the area without wasting a lot of time and gas getting there. One week I am in Lake Michigan the next up in the Straits of Mackinac. I still am able to spend time with my old buddies on Lake St Clair with their big boats only now they have to wait a little bit. I just have to take their good natured kidding about having the "cute" or "ugly little boat". Please feel free to contact me if you want to talk further

Exactly -It can do most all of what a 35' Tiara can do (although admittedly not in the same comfort level or with as many people on board) but is without:
The fuel expense
The large maintenance expense
The large moorage expense

Can also go many places that 35' Tiara will never see (either on the trailer or in the water due to the shallow draft).

Dear Stuberg, There is a Michigan C-Dory dealer. Deck and Docks in Walled Lake/Sylvan Lake, near Pontiac. They often have a boat or two in stock. They are in an area of many small lakes and their main inventory seems to be pontoon boats, but still. I love my C-Dory. I ended up choosing the 22 over the 25. I thought I wanted the 25 with head and self bailing cockpit but that cockpit was just too shallow. The 22 is for two or three people, more if they are real friendly and maybe some on the small side.
If you plan to keep the boat in a slip then you might want to consider some other pilothouse boats like Sea Sport, Osprey, etc. These are heavier, more expensive boats and would cost more to operate but they would be more comfortable (not any safer, that is mostly on the skipper) on the big lake many days. Now I expect Al (Moose) to contradict this assertion and he is both much handier and more handsome than myself. A 22 footer in those lines will weigh about the same as a 25 C-Dory. Now if you plan to trailer the boat often than you can't beat the C-Dory and look hard at the 22. I am often at Manistee, my next planned trips are to GT Bay and then the straits area. GT Bay is a pond compared with lake at Muskegon or Manistee.

PS Rollie, enjoyed your pics of Straits and Lex Chenaux. Love the courtesy docking in Cedarville and strolling that town. Hessel has many photo ops as well. Now is a great time to be at Mackinac Island and on a weekday as well. I liked Al's pictures of the Slate Islands tool. Caribou! Must do an extended tour in Superior soon.

I think a Trip to see the Y Landing Folks in New Hampshire would make a great weekend for you ... Good Call !!! Get togethers are great too, find out about the Family that comes along with having a C-Dory too.

There is a wonderful contingent of C-Brats on the Great Lakes as mentioned before... Some of us here in the NW would love to get a chance to go to a gathering there.. especially after you get your new 25'--oops, getting ahead of myself-- must be my confidence in C-Dory.
 
You should most definitely get a C-Dory... if then you don't like it you can always give it to me (preferably a 25 cuz I already got a 22)... :smilep :smilep :smilep
 
Wow, so many great responses. Thank you very much. Now I just have to decide where to go to take a ride. I have some frequent flyer miles all saved up and ready to be used. I'm available the first week in October so maybe that will be enough time to plan something.

It would be one thing to see the boat with a sales person in a store somewhere, but quite another to ride with an experienced C-Dory Captain and experience the real deal. I've enjoyed looking through some of the great photos and experiences posted on this website.

I am married with a 6 year old son and I want a versatile boat for cruising, fishing, traveling, and just enjoying the water. Having an enclosed cabin is a must which is what got me looking at C-Dory. I want to be able to take the boat out when it's raining like it is here today.

Also, these boats seem to have a stellar reputation for durability and reliability.

I can't wait to meet many of you.
 
Not only would you be able to go to a brat gathering but also could visit the factory all in the same timeframe.just fly on out here to Seattle and join in on the Sequim gathering .there will be all sizes from the cute little 16 to the not so small 25 .I am quite sure that if you were to get out here for this you would be able to get rides on several sizes .details are here

you would also get to see some beautiful scenery in western WA at the same time.there is a nice motel right near the Sequim State Park that works well for several of us.

We seem to be traveling in the same circles; only a few weeks apart however. It is a surprise that we we have not run into each other, either on the road or on the water. My son was on his way to Traverse City area a couple of months ago and chased down C-Dory in transit thinking it was my wife and I. Since they were near Cadillac it was probably you. He was surprised to see another similar boat. Thanks for the comments on the Les Cheneaux pictures. It is a great area that I like to get to at least once a year either to kayak or boat. I don't think that I will be getting up north again this year as I have lots of commitments this fall. I will be perch fishing in Lake Erie, however. Have a great time in Grand Traverse Bay. Lots of luck fishing.
