1962 Columbus Day storm knocked down the Ryderwood WA lookout -- I manned the replacement lookout late summer 1965 after fighting fires for $1.60/hour less board on a DNR fire crew out of Kelso.

Could track freighters on the Columbia River by the smoke and watch Boeing test planes over Mt St Helens -- pre explosion.

Patty here. I remember the 1962 Columbus Day wind storm for 2 reasons. I was a cheerleader that year and we had a football game that night. After a bit of playing time the game was canceled because when the kicker kicked the ball it would be picked up by the wind and literally end up behind him. The second reason was because my Dad had just finished pouring the foundation for a large addition to our house and the whole thing collapsed that night. Good times!
