dump the banner ads for a fee

Hi - I belong to the weather forum "wunderground.com" and gladly pay $10.00 per year to have no banner ads, faster page loads and some added content over the public free site. The C-Brats web site/forum is on my "A+" list and it would be well worth it to me to pay $10.00 or more if I could then have no banner ads, perhaps some more content, and perhaps even a very small discount on hats/T-shirts. If you see this as a good idea, I am in for sure!!

Many of us make regular donations to the site. I am sure that If the moderators were assured of enough income from those donations, that the policy might change….Lets see what they say.

The ads don't bother me--but I don't look at them either..

The ads don't bother me either! We have made a contribution or two but have been somewhat lax, I guess we need to step up our support! This is just he best site on the internet!

leave them. the serve to remind me that I have been searching for stuff and need to log off and buy that birthday, Christmas, anniversary gift

Regardless of all the other considerations, I like having the boat manufacturer's ads here as a reminder of their presence and viability. :wink

Wish they ALL were here (!) :disgust

Imagine what it would be like without them……..

They don't bother me one bit!

Now if they start advertising hair restoration systems, reverse mortgages, health cure-alls, booze, work-at-home jobs, etc., it would be a different matter! :sad

I too do not mind the dealer ads or ads for services we acutally use, it is the cookie teacked banner ads I was thinking I would rather have gone for a fee. Those who elect to see the banners could just not send in $10.00! Easy to see how posts go viral, you defend your territory or position and then it gets out of hand (speaking of me not all of you). I would still love this site even if it looked a Yahoo page!

I find it odd that people are upset about the ads. Its not that you are upset, but that you see them. I just don't see every thing on the side of sites. Whether its this site or facebook or a news site, I just don't see them and they don't bother me. Susan hates them and is always complaining about them while surfing. I just don't see them or see them as a necessity for the sites to prosper, or even stay online. Just like broadcast TV of old, its not free. either you have to pay for it or someone else does. I don't want to every have to pay for every site I go on one at a time. Let the advertisers pick it up. Oh look I have REI ( Really Expensive Items) in my banner ad right now on c-brats, better get going on finding that rain gear for Susan.

I'll never condemn anyone for running an ad blocker - as I run one myself.

However, I've a rather lengthy list of web sites that I've excluded from the ad blocking...something every ad blocking plugin I'm aware of allows for.

Food for thought.

Interesting discussion!

Lots of pros, cons, trade-offs, and considerations.

More food for thought:

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Seems very workable as is to me.

Da Nag, how does the C-Brats website make money from the banner adds? Is it just having the adds appear that advertisers pay you for or does a user have to click on the add for our site to make money? Does using an add blocker prevent the website from making money? I can put up with the adds if it benefits the website.

I'm OK with the banner ads. I was fascinated the first time I saw them... they "know" what I'm looking at. A boating forum where I can also see guitar and RV stuff - what's not to like about that??

We put Google ads into the banner rotation here, along with ads we've sold directly to advertisers. Directly sold ads are more profitable and I'd rather these were 100% of what we show - not for reasons of greed, but they're a great deal for our advertisers, and I'd rather banners be supporting folks who support us. However, it's a lot of work to market and manage directly sold ads, whereas setting up Google ads is mostly a one-time, set it and forget it configuration.

I can't really comment on how members' actions with respect to the Google ads affects the money we make from them. Reason being - Google is extremely strict about site owners encouraging users to display or click on Google ads, and I don't want my words mis-interpreted. They'll drop us like a hot rock if it appears we're encouraging folks to click on their ads, so to be absolutely clear - I discourage anyone from clicking on ads here, simply to enhance our income. The best advice I can give regarding your questions about how Google Adsense ad income works, is to suggest you Google it.

With respect to ad blockers - I stated my position on that earlier. It's completely an individual's choice, and I make no judgements one way or the other on how anyone chooses to view the C-Brats. If you find the ads annoying, run one. If you find them occasionally interesting or relevant, or feel some sense of obligation to run them while visiting - don't run an ad blocker or configure yours to allow them to run at the C-Brats. Totally your choice.

I think it's a bit odd for someone to try and change something someone else has created. After all it's America land of the free. If it does not suite you create your own deal. Change your channel.

OK, I disabled the adblocker to allow them on C-Brats. To do this, there is a little stop sign at the bottom left of your screen. Just click on it and then scroll down to and check the "disable on C-Brats" line. (You probably knew that already...)

But on the other hand, isn't one of the basic ideas that a person should be free to express an opinion and to potentially change things for the better? Then the majority (or the private owner, in this case) can consider it, and then decide whether or not "better" is really better in a given case. Just leaving seems odd to me (vs. asking about something or giving an idea for what you might see as an improvement to a given community).

I don't happen to desire removing the banner ads, and I might have used more neutral language to present my idea (vs. "dump"), but in principle asking/trying seems like a good thing to me vs. just silently leaving.

After I had ordered a gift for my wife, a banner ad for that item, as well as other products from that site, kept popping up on several different sites we visit. I'm sure my wife at least knows what I have been considering for her gift. Plus e-mail messages from the site arrived confirming the order, ship date, and ads for other products. It's hard to do something in secret anymore. I had to insist opening all our e-mail and then be sure to be home (I'm retired) when the package arrived. Those ads asking if I want to meet some attractive lady must rise a question as to my online searches.
