Erie Canal PBS DVD and the Seattle Boat Show

Earlier in the year I received a copy of the PBS show "15 years on the Erie Canal" that was taped off the air by a Brat in the east (my apologies, Senior moment I can't remember who). Since it was taped off the air it won't win any digital quality awards, but anyone used to television in pre-cable days will enjoy it.

As promised I've expunged the usual 10 minute PBS spams and transferred it to DVD. If you want a copy, PM me and I'll bring it to the Seattle Boat Show. Some details:

Four whole minutes into the show and up pop's Halcyon's El. Her comments and Bill's comments come up several times during the show.

Within minutes of the start of Chapter 2, (about 35 minutes in) here comes the fleet of C-Dorys and they play a nice part in the show.

I do need to know how many to burn so don't forget to PM if you want one.

I would love one. The one given to me did not work. After all, I was there when all this happened.

I gotta mention this for Byrdman's benefit. EVERY ONE of the C-dorys who paraded past the cameras had their fenders dragging.

Made me feel better about dragging mine all over the bay during the San Diego gathering.

In defense of the Erie Canal Brats, we were a hundred yards or so from landing at a dock for lunch ... and we were planning ahead ... er, well maybe more than a hundred yards, Don ... and we were planning
w-a-y ahead ... er, ... anyway ...

Wow... I sure would like one Don... Not only am I a fan of El and Bills travels but some day I would love to do dat waterway.

In defence of Brats boating on the Erie Canal. Everyone lets their fenders deployed when boating on the Erie Canal. Many boats from NY that are on the canal fender both sides at all times. With the fenders ready they can go to either side in the lock.

We travel with only two large HTM fenders and usually go to the Stb. side. That way I reach out the window and grab a solid line with the boat hook and Pat can relax and keep the cat from jumping overboard.

I assure you that I would not run with a dangling fender on the CBay-not good form at all!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Fred and Pat

I do believe, El and Bill, that we were talking about making of the movie, not the digging of the canal. If you remember, I was the guy that had to step over you to disembark from my Yacht. Oh well, we are both getting senior moments.

To those of you that were not there. C-Dory Captains DO NOT drag there finders. They also do not dock on an unknown pier without finders. They also do not dock to fellow C-Dorys with out extra finders, especially if they are operating single handed, as three of us were. In fact, all six of the C-dory "Yachts" were handled by excellent seamen. If you do not believe me, just ask the others.

By the way El and Bill, you were missed this year. Great writeup in PassageMakers.

Hey Fred,
What's a "finder"? :crook
Dun (CTYankee)

If my old memory serves me correctly, a "finder" is one of those large cylindrical (in Da Nags case...big round balls) objects that hang off the side of a vessel in order to "find" the dock before the gel coat does.

This canal talk makes the long winter hard to handle....Can't wait top get back on the Ny canals...I pretty much traveled the whole system. I always fender both sides.

Here's a news release re: the Erie Canal PBS special. I have a dozen DVD's burned, of which 8 are spoken for. They'll be at the Hawthorne Friday night get together and the leftovers will probably be at the factory on Saturday.

A heads up: Listen to the lyrics in the background when the "pod" of C-Dorys make their initial appearance on the canal DVD. I'd love to find a place with the entire "15 miles" chantey (sp) but that portion is so appropriate. "A clannish bunch are we..."

WXXI RECEIVES GRANT FROM NEW YORK STATE MUSIC FUND TO PRODUCE LOCAL MUSIC SERIES

Rochester, New York (February 23, 2006) – WXXI’s latest documentary highlights a real treasure in Upstate New York – the Erie Canal. The hour-long documentary travels from Palmyra to the Genesee River, stopping along the way to visit the people and places that make the canal an increasingly popular destination for visitors from around the world. Throughout the program canal expert and historian Thomas Grasso offers great insight into the making and the history of the canal while SUNY Brockport associate professor, accomplished musician and expert in Erie Canal songs Dr. William Hullfish provides the documentary’s soundtrack. 15 Miles on the Erie Canal premieres Tuesday, March 7 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11).

The Erie Canal was an engineering marvel in its time and remains so today. More than a feat of engineering, the Canal – which opened in 1825 – gave access to the rich lands and resources west of the Appalachians. The waterway brought wealth and a host of new influences to Rochester and the other towns it touched. Bonnie Hays, director of Historic Palmyra, can attest to that. She oversees the Palmyra Historical Museum, the Alling Coverlet Museum and the William Phelps General Store Museum – all products of the prosperity the waterway brought to the town. Hays, as well as Vicky Daly, Palmyra Mayor and Elder Norman Mayes, a missionary with the Hill Cumorah Church, are interviewed in the documentary.

Upon leaving Palmyra, the documentary travels by boat and oftentimes, on bicycle through the town of Macedon where the area is remote and starkly beautiful. That’s where Pete Wiles’ family began their lifelong work along the canal with a first class marina.
The next stop is Fairport where the production catches up with the Fairport Crew Team and checks out the boat house and docking facility. Viewers will then catch up with Ellen and Bill Fiero as they travel with a flotilla of C-Dories.

On the way to Pittsford, viewers will meet those who work on the canal by land and on the water. In Pittsford, viewers will get acquainted with Michael and Diana Miller, owners of Ports of Pittsford and the Seasons of Fairport, as well as Scott Likely, owner of Towpath Bike Shop. Sam Patch also makes its way on screen as Eric O’Neil, GM of Cornhill Navigation and Ted Curtis, Commodore of Cornhill Navigation talk about the packet boat and its sister boat Mary Jemison.

15 Miles on the Erie Canal’s last stop is at Lock 32, one of the area’s best kept secrets. Viewers will see New York’s only man-made white-water course, where kayakers practice in the rapid waves.

During the program breaks of 15 Miles on the Erie Canal WXXI will share with viewers Dr. Hullfish’s recording session for the documentary’s soundtrack. Hullfish, who is an Associate Professor for SUNY Brockport’s theater department and plays with the Golden Eagle String Band, was joined by musicians Eric Carlson, Bruce Brown, Dwight Garrow and Mike Mumford which was captured on video in WXXI’s radio studio.

Don,

Thank you so much for sending out the DVD. We truly appreciate your generosity. It looks like a wonderful area to cruise, and only excites me more about taking the C-Dory there.

I hope our paths will cross so I can shake your hand in person and treat you to the adult beverage of your choice.

Best wishes,
Jim Bathurst

I'll bring a few blank CD's Terry. If Murphy doesn't strike, I'll burn copies at the Hawthorne. I'll be there Thursday afternoon. Thanks for jumping in, I had a major flairup of Old Timers Disease and forgot you were the source of the video. I'm sure the dozen or so who have or will get copies are happy you did it. I sure am. In fact, I've watched most of the DVD at least 4 times so far and have learned something new each viewing. It's a "Keeper."

Terry --

If your tape is by the Dady Brothers, we will sure second your motion that it is some of the best music we have heard on and about the canal. We'll never forget that evening, tied off in Spencerport listening to the Dady Bros on the banks of the canal with your family -- they, you, the music, the evening, that unforgettable dinner we all shared, the ice cream after dinner, the boat tied to the edge of the canal ... what an evening ... that's what cruising is all about.

Don -- thanks to you and Chris we watched the PBS show a few nights ago. It was great that Terry sent it to you and that you are continuing the sharing -- that was the first time we have seen it. A great show and a must see for those thinking of doing the Erie someday (or just dreaming about it). Thanks.

And Fred -- how can we ever forget that you rafted outside Halcyon when we were all on the Erie -- why, we have preserved your footprints on the deck -- such historic relicts will probably bring a fortune someday -- you know -- "Fred was here"

To My Muchly Admired Yachtees,

I am glad you remember. You can now wash the deck.

All kidding aside, That show, 15 MILES ON THE ERIE CANAL was very well done. The people who made it got it right.

As for you two. Your contribution was great. You told it like it was, not only about the canal. but about the the C-Dory's as a cruising boat. I still run into the "doubting Thomases" that can't believe in the versatility of the 22" C-dory. At the Providence Boat Show, I was able to contribute to the sale of a 22' C-Dory because I told a prospective customer, and now a new-to-be C-Dory owner what owning a C-Dory is all about. He new it was not a lie or a sales pitch, that it was from the heart.

We are a very fortunate group of people.

As for the Erie Canal. As soon as I escape innkeeping, I am going to spend a month on the Erie Canal. It is a very interesting place. Though I will cherish the two trips on the Erie Canal for the rest of my life, We did go sort of fast and did not stop and "smell the roses".

Happy Sailing

Fred
