Fishing Puget Sound

Thought I would give update on what I am seeing out at the Bar and Humpy Hollow.

Wednsday we fished the Bar till noon looking for Silvers. NADDA. Moved over to the Hollow for the afternoon bite till 5:00pm. Got 3 in the boat lost 'bout the same, very slow.

Today we decided to give up on Silvers till fish counters tell us numbers improve. They have only been counting 5 to 10 each day in Everett. We also heard the morning bite on Humpys was good.We started today at the shipwreck at 9:00am and had our limit of 8 by Noon. We had 2 nice ones, one was over 8lbs, he is going on the Barbeque tonight :D .We will be hitting the Hollow in the morning to see if we can get our limit again.

I saw 3 C-Dorys out today, Two Lucky Fish left the Marina just ahead of us, saw Goblin, and Cautious Horse out in Humpy Hollow.
We had another great day of boating, oh ya, Alisa is ahead of me on both number of fish caught and size :embarrased but that will change :smiled .

Guess the silvers just aren't in yet. Sure hope they make it, but I'm starting to get concerned.

Thanks for the update Wayne. I've been slaveing away at the orifice all week. Glad to hear someone has gotten out there to do some damage. I probably saw you last week out near shipwreck. I saw two 19' C-Dorys, so I'm guessing one was yours.

We are going to head out this Saturday. Should be out near shipwreck all day, so hopefully I'll see some C-Brats out there.

I smoked 10 pinks this week, and they actually came out pretty darn well. Not quite as good as silvers or kings, but I'm suprised at how tasty they are. I cut them in strips, and marinated them for a couple days in a brown sugar, worchesteshire, soy and white grape juice brine.

IMHO, Pinks are some of the best salmon for smoking due to the oilyness of the meat. Granted that means that you need to put them on ice as soon as you bleed them (assuming you do that right when you boat the fish). But I do that with all my fish if I can.

Your recipe looks interesting. I notice the only salt is coming from the soy sauce and worchesteshire. I'm still in the learning stages on smoking but here is what I use. I take the fish and put a layer in the bottom of a glass caserole with the skin down. I then cover liberally with a layer of non-iodized salt and then a layer brown sugar. I continue to layer the fish to a little below the top of the dish. Then I cover it and put it in the refridgerator over night. In the morning I drain the liquid off and put it on the racks to dry a bit while I set up the smoker. I've never had any complaints and it sure is easy :)

There are several recipes on gamefishin.com that I want to try as sometimes mine will come out just a bit salty for my tastes.

Roger has offered to take me out in the morning so maybe we'll see you out there! I hope we find a fish or two!
 
Launched at everett's 10th street Friday about 5:30, beauty sunrise and hit west side of Possession bar for silvers. caught a small one right off the bat. Trolled to the outer bar and east , had some more hits and caught to kings in the middle teens( catch and release). Trolled to the Horseshoe hole and then ran to the shipwreck and caught four Humpies, last fish was at 90 feet. The sun was out all day and water was flat. A Good Day!

Hey Work Release, nice to see you out there :) , You must have left before me as around 4:00pm the wind kicked up REAL FAST, pulled up and started heading in. Before I even got to the ferry dock it started getting real bumpy. Making the turn at the ferry it was at least 4 ft peaking chop as the water seems to come from two direction there. Then it was 3 ft white caps all the way to the navy ships where the waves were back to at least 4 ft and wind that tried to slam me into the wall. Had to crab all the way in. First big water that I have had with this boat and I was real impressed. Kept it around 10 knots and just roller coastered. A lot less roll than my old 28 ft Chris Craft. The only tricky part I noticed was that the flat bottom lets the wind have its way with ya. So ya do a little crab'n,lol.

We got 4 humpys lost 5, much slower today, must be between schools.Read Da Nag's last post and he stated that there are still only humpys in PA so the Silvers are still at least weeks away. If this Saturday is anything like last Saturday you will see a lot of boats. I got one of the last parking spots at 8:00am. There were a lot of fish caught though, 500 boats checked at Everett with 1951 Humpys.

Gary and I will be at Everett around 6:15-6:30AM. I plan to fish just south of Gedney and hit bait box early and then run over to humpy hollow around 9-ish. I'll have some nice Proseco and OJ on board - Mimosas for those who come to see me around 9:30!

Hey All,

Gary. On the smoking. My recipe probably doesn't do a great job of preserving the fish, as there isn't much salt, but I vacuum seal and freeze them anyway. My dad uses a similar recipe to yours, but I prefer a little sweeter, more marinated style.

We only fished Saturday. Launched from Mukilteo, but didn't get out until about 10:00, so I missed the morning bite. We trolled all day, and only caught one 7 lb silver. Lost one at the boat as well.

Not sure I want to launch from Muilteo again. That was my first time there, and that ramp sucks.

We are trying to figure out where we want to go for the labor day weekend. Thought about Seiku, Westport, or just hanging at Shipwreck. If anyone has any suggestions it would be much appreciated.
 
fished all day today. started at the ferry landing and south to shipwreck and back . cought 3 dogfish and lost 1 12 lb ball when we were daydreaming and got a little to shallow....lol.....
hopefully we will be able to put some fish in the boat soon.
 
Sorry to hear about the ball Roger, those things aren't cheap! Was nice to see you out there :D . We started out on east side of the Bar and picked up one Humpy trying for silvers. Moved over to Hollow at 11:00 and did not see anything. I think we should have stayed on the Bar as we saw lots of fish there. We will be out again tomorrow and may stay on the Bar this time. We'll see how the water looks and decide from there, if it's nice enough we may try Point no Point.

Guys - I fished yesterday (Mon) too. I started at Jeff Head, then went to shipwreck/humpy hollow, then to the S. of Hat Island and then to the oil cans south of Edmonds. Bottom line - SLOOOOWWW at shipwreck/humpy hollow, slow at hat island. LOTS of bait at Jeff Head and many take downs (didn't land any as I was continually handing off to a guest who had an amazing ability to lose the fish I put on the line). Also had a couple of good hits around 1-2PM near the oil tanks.

Another friend of mine hit the oil tanks on Sat. and caught 4 silvers and a pink (with another guy in the boat). 2 of the silvers were ocean going 6-8 lb'rs the other two were resident 2-4 lb'rs. Silvers were caught on both lead+cut plug and green flasher with green and white hootchie.

I'd recommend the oil cans and will probably hit them myself this weekend.

Sounds like it's a little slow out there. Well maybe they will be in this weekend.

I'm thinking of heading out to the Port Townsend area. Anyone have any suggestions on where to fish there?

Sekiu is a little far for me, but I wanted to get out to where the silvers are. I wonder if that's far enough.
 
I'll be running out of Edmonds this weekend and will probably spend most of my time between Jeff Head and the oil cans south of Edmonds. I hope to see a few other C-brats out there.

We fished both Wednesday and Thursday starting out at Point no Point and then moved over to the Bar after tide change when the water started moving to much. Over 10 feet of water moving gets tough at the Point. We saw LOTS of Silvers at the Point on Wednesday fewer on Thursday but Lots on the West side of the Bar on Thursday. My guess it was the same school, they just moved across. The ones we landed were in the 8-10lb range, we lost several that spit hooks. Two that we lost felt much larger. We were fishing with green dodgers and green splatter squids around 2 knots, any slower and the dogs hit.

We took today off to get some sleep, shop and get all the blood off the boat. Also the weather sounded like it might have been a little bumpy. Looks like Boeing is going to give me a few more months to fish so I will be out for some time to come. Hope to see more of ya out there.

I fished Sat, Sun and Mon. - I skipped Humpy Hollow since it was so slow last week - you can still find fish there (especially in the early AM) but they are not there in near the numbers of two weeks ago. Instead I spent most of my time between Kingston and the N end of Bainbridge island with a little time on the east side south of Edmonds. Report:

Overall, fishing was slow for me except for the early AM. The best spot was on the west side of the sound from Jefferson head to the SW point of the bay into Kingston. We caught and released 4 kings - 3 about 6-8# and one about 12#. Also picked up 2 small silvers (about 3#). From what I hear from various fishing buddies, Jeff Head is seems to be about the best place right now for silvers. A friend of mine limited the boat (4 silvers) yesterday between 8AM and 1PM fishing the triangular shaped sunken island (about 300yd off shore, W side, 60 foot contour goes up to 45-50' in the center, between President point and Jefferson point). I saw lots of bait in that area and for about 1mile north of there yesterday and would probably recommend that over Humpy Hollow. Otherwise if you want pinks and are launching from Everett, you might be better off going up the Snohomish and fishing from them in the river.

Weird weekend of fishing for us.

Didn't get out until Sunday morning. We fished West Point Sunday morning. Released four kings. One was about 25 lbs that my wife caught. That one hurt. I guess it kind of makes me wonder if WDFW shouldn't have kept that Elliot Bay fishery open. Seems to me like the fish are just late, but that the run still is strong. Ended up keeping three pinks, and one 8 lb silver.

We then motored all the way to Port Townsend. Fished the evening bite at Lagoon point, which is right across from Port Townsend. Saw an amazing amount of fish on the finder, but couldn't get one to bite. Neither could anyone else. We fished it again on the morning bite on Monday. Ended up with one pink for our trouble.

We picked up six crab outside Port Townsend. It sure seems like there aren't many around this year. We had to work for those. I think If I could have gone deeper, I might have gotten more, but I could only get down to 90 feet.

In retrospect, I guess it would have been better to just stay and fish closer to town. It was good to run the boat that far though. That's the longest run we've made so far. Boat ran great. Just wish we had caught more fish.
 
Fished Friday and caught one 8 1/2 lb humpy at Possession Point. Fished Monday and caught one 11 lb Silver on the west side of the Bar at 10:00am. Man was that good grilled on the BBQ. Had to take today off to pull picket duty, so we will be out again tomorrow.

Fished today from 9:00am to 3:00pm nothing on the Bar would bite. We went to the Hollow for the last 30 min. and picked up a 7 lb humpy. The water was fantastic all day.
 
Got skunked for the first time since we started vacation. Water was great but was quite foggy for the first 3 hours. Had one big surprize though, we were fishing the east side of the bar heading south when all of a sudden out of the fog a Destroyer appeared, awsome sight, glad we were on the bar. About an hour later as the fog was lifting the Carrier came by. I posted some pictures in my album if anyone wants to see them. We see them all the time at the dock as we leave and come in but to see them on the water was pretty cool.

Gonna be out again this Saturday for the derby so I hope fishing picks up.

Fished Saturday, and purchased an Edmonds Coho Derby ticket. Turned out to be a waste of loot. We fished all day, and got one pink, and one real small silver.

We fished West Point in the morning. Got the one pink, and a couple shaker backmouths.

Ran the boat over to Point-No-Point, where there were a few boats, including a big charter boat. We went out quite a ways between there and Possession. We saw plenty of fish on the finder out in the rips, but there were tons of weeds and crap floating around, so were were constantly checking gear. We ended up catching the one small resident silver, and several other shakers.

My analysis is that either the fish are quite late this year, or it's just going to be a real bad year. I'm surprised at the number of kings that are around this late, so hopefully that's an indicator that things are late.
