HANNAH - Looks like it's our turn!

Captains Cat

Predictions are for HANNAH to come up the right coast and be down around Norfolk on Saturday morning. If she comes up the bay, it could be like ISABEL or ERNESTO. We had water 2+ft over the top of our pier for those and I don't want to take a chance that it'll float the CAT off the lift and push it into the roof.

We'll haul her this afternoon and put her in a safe place (no trees).

Good luck with this one, Charlie. The season started off slow, but seems to be making up for it now. One of the many good things about our boats: that trailerability... good for getting to interesting new cruising waters; also good for getting the boat out of harm's way.

Batten down what you can, then get out. Keep us posted.

Best wishes,
Jim

We're not going anywhere, just want to get the boat out of harms way. Will probably park it where, if a tree comes down, it won't get hit. I can always put it in my steel building, not sure if the door will close all the way (length) but I may try.

We've got an 18KW generator that is autostart and will run the whole house if I'm careful with the AC units. It's run from a 500Gal buried propane tank which is nearly full so we should be fine. ISABEL and ERNESTO put water up on the property about 100' from where the house is so I think it's OK. Will take lots of pictures.

Charlie...

We are already experiencing abnormally high tides here in NE Florida and this storm is a long way off from us. I pulled my boat yesterday and expect I'll be raking flotsam from the yard again next week. I just got it cleaned up from the high tides of Fay. Funny the weather has been beautiful here last few days aside from a 10 to 20 mph north east blow. Good luck to anyone in it's path.

I have been monitoring the storm path and forecasts as well. Usually by the time they get up our way (MA) the energy has dissipated and it's just a wet few days. If it looks really nasty I will of course pull the boat. Fortunately I can pull the Tomcat out of the water with my Tacoma. For something other than in town I need to make arrangements for a suitable tow vehicle.

hey charlie,
an old salt like you, hannah should be childs play.
i'd send the little lady out to stock up on beer and ice, while you still have the chance. you might also ask her to pick up some buffalo wings and chips. never know about those late night snack cravings.
good luck and keep us posted.

Well, Charlie;
Looks like it is our turn again with Hannah. I hope IKE
doesn't prove to be the 'general' in charge.

I'll see what I can do about slowing the girl down as she
passes Va. Beach for you.

We have Sea Angel in the 'barn', so as long we don't get a 12'
surge up the creek, we should be fine. The CD25 is on the
bottom rack in the 'barn'.

We ran our [automatic] 15kva generator thru its paces today
and all seems well. Ours does this every Thursday at 0815...
all is good and the ham antennas are set.

Well, I've just reviewed the predictions and decided NOT to haul the CAT. It's as high on it's lift as it will go and tied securely to the roof supports at the 4 corners. I'll take pictures tomorrow and post them.

The strength of the storm was the determining factor.

Now IKE is another kettle of fish altogether with 140MPH winds. That will definately call for hauling the boat!

Will keep folks posted. Haven't heard from those in NC, lots of C-Dorys down there at a recent gathering. Stay safe folks.

Charlie

Time for a boogie hurricane party is the mood around NC!

I monitor http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/index.shtml? about a dozen times daily as they get nearer to the islands. Hanna was downgraded to "S" (relative to winds) this afternoon; but it's the storm surge I'm more interested in than the winds. Since, like Floyd and all other beastly cyclones approaching land, it's the strorm surge which ruins your day(s). Ike is a super cell cyclone with an ubelievably large eye wall. Just depends on the Pascals for both of these units. I'm supposed to head to FL on Monday for corporate meetings and return on Wednesday morning . If Ike's pressure falls below 940 and lower, I'm going no where. Opelia sat across from the house far too long just churning, and churning, and churning moving at a miserable 3mph clip NNE.

Thanks Charlie,

We have ~11" - 12" deficit in the ground H20 table. Hanna should help bring us to near normal levels. Looks like closer to a Charleston, SC landfall as of this morning.

We're tied down at the four corners to the boat house corner posts and the boat is as high as it can go on the lift. This one should be fine but if IKE heads up the coast, I think we'll pull it.

Hi Charlie, et al,
We're a bit so. of you, in New Bern, NC, awaiting Hannah's arrival. Had a heavy (brief) rain band event this AM ~10AM-12, looks like another abt late afternoon. We have 2 boats in the water now, both in good hurricane holes. Expect about 4 ft storm surge on the Neuse. Not too concerned about Hannah, but Ike will sure bear watching closely & maybe more preps.
Looks now like eye will pass inland about 100 mi. east of us mid-AM tmw.
In our "pirmary" marina, Duck Creek, where the "new" 30' Mainship Pilot is, they've never had any boat damage due to a hurricane (but some from boats with inept captains coming in for haulout). The CD-25 is now up the Trent River at River Bend Marina, well protected. She'll be there until a new owner materializes, no room at Duck Creek.

Ah yes, a little trivia....

When I first replied to Charlie I misspelled the hurricane's name,"HANNA".
I was just finishing one of my Sunday School lessons talking about "HANNAH"
and the spelling stuck with me and crept into the reply.

Sorry for the 'small' confusion.

Art

Art, the "confusion" is all mine!!

The hurricane is HANNA, NOT HANNAH!

You're the only one to catch it, so far! Now IKE is hard to confuse, guess they couldn't call it EISENHOWER!

Getting kinda grey (the wx, not me!) here, been breezy all afternoon. We're ready except for moving porch furniture around. It's still just a TS!

Charlie

Hanna is moving by us about 100 miles off shore all we are experiencing is a light drizzle and winds are less than they have been at about 5 to 10 mph. Tides are about 1 foot above normal but they've been that way all week. Since the next one is IKE I certainly hope we don't go all the way to M's and have a hurricane MAMIE.

One word for the weather outdoors right now - SULTRY. Very, very heavy weather - a fish out of water could survive in this. Looks like Hanna's ~1hr from landfall in SC. Just came back from dinner and the BP station down the road has the windows boarded up - huh? Some kids came in and said they were going to have a hurricane party - what hurricane? Of course youths need no reason for a party, but this provides a cause to have one :teeth I do hope we get some decent rainfall out of this - we can sure use it.
