Looking for some thoughts. Finally thinking of repowering for my 90hp Etec with a new Tohatsu 90hp at 392 lbs. Tohatsu has all the other brands beat by at least $2k right now and $ of course is a huge concern and Tohatsu motors look like a great choice. Should I be concerned about the weight on the transom of my boat. I will have a kicker back there too. And of course the two fuel tanks. Thoughts Plz. Thanks

This is what found out while researching my electric conversion of a 22' cruiser.
According to the C-Dory website, 22 ft C-Dory hull is designed for:
  • Fuel Capacity up to 46 gallons = 275lbs
  • Power Outboard up to 115 HP ~ 370 - 415 lbs
Typical 9.9 HP four-stroke outboards weigh between 80 lbs (36 kg) and 130 lbs (59 kg) according to Google AI The other option would be to go with a 6kW electric outboard (67 lbs) and put the battery up front.
So you may be a little heavy in the stern but you could balance it by putting some of the movable weight up in the bow, or you travel with less than full fuel tanks.

The hull was changed, IIRC, in the 1980s to add more lift in the stern for heavier outboards. It’s been covered here before so search the forum and see if you’re pre/post that change.

Tohatsu makes a good motor & I think you will be ok with its weight. CD 22 Catclaw ran with a 2018 Honda 115 weighing 478 pounds. Our CD22 with 29,000 miles logged over the last 20 some years has Twin Honda 60’s since 2019 weighing combined, the same as the older Honda 115. I do have trim tab’s & Permatrims, but also routinely cruise in SE Alaska with 85+ gal of fuel with a whole lot of other items needed for extended cruising & have been in some pretty extreme conditions without mishap at least none due to extra stern weight. Even with a 9.9 hp Tohatsu kicker weighing 85 lbs you would be 10 ponds lighter than my twin 60 weight & lighter than many other CD22’s doing fine with weights above that.
