Need help settling on a boat name

Well, these are some interesting replies. :)

As with everything, boat naming seems to be "different strokes for different folks".

I can see our "somewhat clever" names were generally not popular - not even those suggested by the kids. Of course we would not have picked one of those, but I guess the cute things kids do are really appreciated only by their parents.

Hookinhalibut, I got a kick out of C-weet! It's not for us, but that's a great name. :)

Mark, yeah - I need to have my username changed, but have been waiting until we came up with a name for the boat. :) We did try out Gottaboat, but it didn't feel right.

Dotnmarty, Blue C is also a great name, but we decided early one that we didn't want to follow the C in the name convention. I mean no offense to those who used the C -- I actually think it is great tradition. But, it's just not for us.

Seabeagle, I am way too superstitious to name a boat S.S. Minnow! :)

Speaking of superstitions and names I would never choose: I saw a boat recently which had it's name painted on - upside down. The name? "Don't Panic!"

For those that suggested waiting, I think we have waited long enough. I did the math, and we are actually coming up on a year and a half since buying the boat and pondering names (my how time flies!), so I think we have waited long enough. Besides, going out in an unnamed boat is bad luck! :)

After all, who wants to get on the radio and use their registration numbers?

But I really do appreciate the replies; it is great to get other opinions and ideas. Please keep them coming. We'll probably decide in the next week or so, so I can get the letters ordered.

And then, I'll then no doubt post question on how to put them on -- and get them straight. For those that saw my crooked window thread (crooked boat, actually, according to Akroyd and others), you'll understand how important it is that I get the letters on straight. :)

My I suggest : Lat's & Att's

Speaking of which, they are having a gathering here in Anacortes, August 13-15. What is this group all about, if anyone here knows?

P.S. Sorry for highjacking the thread, but it is a time-honored C-Brat tradition!

Mike, usually a sign shop will make the name all on one sheet of vinyl transfer. I washed the spot and used wax & grease remover (or alcohol etc) and blue Costco shop/paper towels to make sure it was spotless and free of grease/wax etc. I used some blue masking tape & a tape measure and laid out the name prior to pealing back the protective film that covers the adhesive. I then stood back and "eye-balled" it making any final adjustments; you'd be surprised how accurate your eye can be. Once you're happy with the position leave one half taped on, peel back the other and slowly adhere it as you go, pressing the transfer down with a squeegee (a credit card works in a pinch). Try not to trap air underneath and adhere from the center/middle outward. Peel the top paper off and voila! :thup

Hope that makes sense. There are some pics in my album of our name application.

Wow - that came out great -- and that font is perfect for your name.

Where did you get that, and would you recommend them?

Thataway Bob is spot on - a name that means something to you and your family - and one easy to hear and identify on the radio.

We chose Halcyon since we enjoy the classics and the tale associated with the bird, Halcyon. For bridges, locks and tows (especially along the Gulf coast) El says we are Hal C. Yon - and they hear it fine since many tows have a person's name). Keep if simple, we suggest.

Thanks! Yeah, I like the font. We wanted something "exotic".

I had them made by a local sign shop and I'd recommend them, but I think they've gone out of business. Any sign shop/graphics arts business should be able to make them if they make vinyl transfers. There are "boat name" companies on line and some have a window to design your name w/ different colors/fonts etc. Kinda fun. But I found the local sign shop was a little cheaper and I could work with them designing it on their desktop.

Actually, Mike, I could relate to your childrens' suggestion of the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything. This is, and has been for many years, my childrens' theme song. We even changed if from, "We're the Pirates. . ." to "We're the Long kids who don't do anything." Thankfully they are all grown now and I don't have to worry about what they do or don't do - ha, if it were only that easy. We actually purchased a pirate flag to fly when the kids are on the boat with us!

Check out our boat letters on the first page of our photo album. We love our letters and probably spent way more than we should have, but we love the gold letters. Ours are larger than most, but we like the way it looks from a long way away and we think the proportion is perfect for our boat. We bought them online and we even had to replace one side about three years after we originally installed them because of a warranty repair that ruined one side. The replacement was a perfect match.

Hello to all.

I am sure the musicians here picked up on the Appassionato name on our list. Well, we have decided to stay musically themed with the name, and have added two more options, limiting the field now to only to three.

I guess Pirates who don't do anything will have to wait for the next boat. :)

Anyway here are the contenders:

Allegro - Lively, Quick
Appassionato - With Passion
Rhapsody - A free-flowing composition, usually with contrasting moods, often incorporating improvisation.

Actually, you Gershwin fans will appreciate that our initial thought was Rhapsody on Blue, but the warnings here about cumbersome names led is to abandon old George. :(

Now I know you all feel that boat naming should be a personal thing, but it really does help to bounce these off other friendly boaters and get a little feedback. And were could anyone find boaters more friendly than on the C-Brats forum? :)

And for those of you that offered up many great suggestions, we thank you greatly. There were many great boat names in there (future boat namers take note).

Thanks again to all.
