Oil Buddy extractor

Hello everyone! Hope all is well. I wanted to get your opinion of the Oil Buddy or similar device for changing oil via the dip stick. I'm so clumsy that oil changes are very messy for me. Any comments welcomed. Thank you.

I have the West Marine "Manual Oil Changer" (Model #3704574), and find it to be very efficient. (Not messy either). In the West Marine catalog it is listed for $42.99, however when I purchased mine it was on sale for considerably less and I had a $15 credit voucher to apply towards it as well.
 
I got the "Oil Boy" extractor from West Marine last spring an it works like a champ. Simple to use and no fuss or muss. I think there are several products available that are pretty much the same. They work good!
 
I had one of the Jabsco 12 volt oil extractor pumps which sit atop a 5 gallon pail during my unenlightened years when I had an IO. But I found it was more trouble than it was worth for use with my twin 40 Hondas, since they are so easy to drain by gravity. Sure enough, there's always a little mess though.

Now John J, you're a guy with an enviable problem! (Unfortunately....or perhaps fortunately I have to drive a bit to get to West Marine, so anything I need from there goes on a list, for the next time I'm near the "Great Toy Store" :roll:

I have the same problem as John J as my office is across the street from West Marine in Seattle. For awhile though, it was even worse, as Outdoor Emporium was also within walking distance. Lucky for me (and my relationship with the wife), Outdoor Emporium moved to down by the ballparks so I have to make an effort to get there. I figure that saves us about $1000 a year.

On a semi related note... On a recent discussion on the game fishing forum, there was something like an Alcoholic Anonymous confessional of guys who hide their fishing tackle purchases from their wives. You know you have a fishing problem when you hide your tackle purchases :lol: !.

I would like to know if anyone has found a wat to change the Honda 90 oil with out makeing a mess. What I mean is with-out useing an extractor. How about some ideas on changeing the oil filter? I use plenty of diaper papers from West Marine and stuff them around the filter before turning it out.

Get you one of those plastic gallon milk jugs and fashion a funnel out of it. Cut the opening leaving a flap of plastic that will fit up under the lip under the Honda drain plug. I had the best luck cutting a drain hole in the lowest part of the jug (when held in place for use), and just leaving the cap on. Also leave most of the rest of the jug on, including the handle to hold it with. If you cut it just right, the oil will shoot out into the jug without spilling a drop and run out the hole in the bottom into your container. If it doesn't seem to be ideal, get another jug and start over.

Easy and cheap. Free if you already buy your milk in the plastic jugs.

To change the filter, just tilt the motor full up before unscrewing the cartridge, and the only spilled oil will be the one or two drops that fall off the o-ring.
 
:idea: I have figured out that the best solution to the oil changing mess on a four cycle is to get yourself a E-TEC and be done with oil changes forever. :!:

Mike, thats way to easy. Like the idea of also being able to readily retrieve the plug if it gets away from me.
 
Tyboo Mike had a great idea on the Honda 90 filter. How about us guys with the twin 40's? The oil filter is located on the side of the engine and tilting doesn't help. Any ideas. I tried putting a rag under it but quite a bit of oil flowed out (more than my rag would soak up.) Anyone come up with a better plan?
 
Simple again. Run the tires on one side of the trailer up onto as tall a block as you can, and then stick a knife into the tires on the other side.

Or you can do like the two-strokers and just drain the oil into the water. (Kidding - joke - not serious - don't beat me up, Roger!)
 
Hey guys, Thanks for the info. I never considered tilting the engine full up before removing the filter. Sometimes I don't consider or see what is right in front of me...Ha!
Also, here in Annapolis I'm frequently asked if I'm Power or Sail.
Is there a friendly feud between 2 stroke and 4 stroke power owners as well?

Nope, not at all. Wanna start one? Better get a look at Big Roger before you get too carried away, though. I'm safe, because Little Lisbeth will protect me.

As far as I'm concerned, if Dusty ran one of them weedeater motors, they must be OK. And if the ETech proves its mettle over the next few years, I might even consider a pair of the things when it comes time to soup up the TyBoo.

No one would beat up a NICE guy like you. Besides, I've seen you and you've seen me and frankly, in a fight, my money is on YOU. But seriously, I have a method I've used quite successfully to change the oil in my Honda 40's and I've never spilled a SINGLE drop.....
I pay someone esle to do it
I've even learned a thing or two from you on my posts....
