Perfect cup o' Joe

Dan,

I missed your Kona coffee at Naked Island. You got up too early. I spent too much time paddling around in the rain so slept in. Anyway we had our own since I just got back from Kona about 10 days earlier.

During Christmas I read an article in Consumers Reports about coffee testing. I can't vouch for the objectivity, but their top rated coffee was Dunkin Donuts. You can buy it on line, but we need an objective outside opinion from a donut fan down south before I spend $15.00 to get an $8.00 pound of coffee.

Any votes for Dunkin Donuts over Folgers?

RF, I've been outa town for a week or I would have already replied. Couldn't resist. Sure you could put tea into the filter in the latte machine. Question is why the heck would you ? Might as well just warm up some water and drink it.

Well, I gotta say (or fuss-up) :| I rarely drink coffee anymore, had to get "un-hooked" somehow, cuz I think my 'bod was to the point of "saturation" :crook What I like better now is "Erba Mate". It is all about "matein" and not caffein. Sorry bout the healthnut approach on yer cool coffee thread and all :lol: I save most goodys for being out on RedFox, coffee is one of them. Variety :thup but survivin to :roll:

Glad I won't be blowin-up that fancy latte machine when it arrives in my favorite dumpster :teeth or GS (garage sale) :smilep

Guess I ain't as refined as most of you folks.
When it comes to coffee, I just "Git-er-done". Throw in some grounds and heat'er up till she boils, pour in a cup and add a few drops of cold water to settle the grounds and drink. Want more coffee? Just add more grounds and water and heat'er up till she boils and do'er again. When the grounds git deeper then the water, just toss'em and start over.
The grounds--- oh, I like the Kona Coffee from the Bad Ass Coffee Company! Kinda fits, don'cha know.

Yeh, you've got a good technique -- one refinement I'd suggest -- throw a pebble into the pot with the ground coffee. When you hear the pebble bouncing on the bottom, she boils, and it's done. Learned this from an ol' cowboy up on the Island in the Sky, Utah -- he called it "rolling rock coffee" and it works.
Oh, and I fix El's coffee every morning -- why? Well, it says so in the Scriptures -- "He-brews."
 
And who is Tim Horton? Never heard of him out west, but I think I could get along with the guy.

Little history lesson for you on Tim Horton. Now most of our Canadian friends know who Tim Horton is, but most Americans are still a little behind on their hockey history. Tim Horton was a hockey player from Canada. Was considered to be one of the best players and was very successful in hockey until his unexpected death in 1974. He had started a coffee chain in Canada with another fella. Back in 1995, Wendy's International bought the chain (you know, Wendy's, the fast food chain) and started expanding and franchising Tim Horton's in the Midwest and Northeast. OK, logged on to Woot this morning, saw the machine. First thing I thought (and the next thing I did) was, "Hmm, wonder how long before this appears on C-Brats." Got to C-Brats, and low and behold, here it is. I bought my Cup 'o Joe machine off Woot for the boat. Doesn't do Espresso, Cappucino or Latte's, but it does brew one mean cup of coffee.

Sheeesh -- four pages on a cuppa. Hey -- forget those grinders and energy-demanding perkers -- Get a plastic cone ($1.29) and some paper cones to fit inside (pennies), spoon in some coffee (ground fine at the market, whatever kind suits your fancy, and as many scoops as you wish) and add boilding water (heated on the stove) -- result: Perfect cuppa. Want expresso? Add a few more scoops of coffee.

Those Maxwell House coffee bags are great if you put two in a cup, pour boiling water over them and let them steep 5 minutes.

Even better if they've been laying around in your suitcase for 3 months before using 'em.

El & Bill's coffee recipe brings me back to submarine coffee days/nights/whenever.

I actually use the Mellita drip/filter system most of the time.

But when trolling alone in the morning and minding the helm, downriggers, fishfinder, radio, other boats, and incoming weather, I have been known to seek instant gratification by mixing the dehydrated essence of the elusive morning fix into my trusty C-Dory cup and set it upon the cabin heater to warm its body before entering mine. Sacrilege? Maybe, but such times are not for those of us with only two functional upper appendages.

Guess I need to bring along a First Mate or the Admiral to add a connoisseur's touch to the java journey part of the fish hunt, but there goes my solitude and a good part of the urge to wander out alone and be with the great outdoors in my trusted floating abode.

I think I'll just stick with the drip in the nip of the morning and resort to the to the instant outlet to preserve my personal peace with myself underway.
