I'll probably make a quick trip Sunday am.

I fished Buoy 10 for the first time yesterday on a charter. Got a king, about 12 and a clipped coho about 8. Lost a really nice king that jumped behind the boat and then snapped the leader! As my Dad always says when we lose a fish, "Conservation." Was very interesting to fish among 1000 boats and be there and see the gear. Delta diver with a fish flash, whole herring on a short leader. 17 to 30 pulls out from the reel in shallow water.
 
11:47pm and I just checked into a hotel in vegas. Its 95 out right now. cant wait to hit the plane on friday.
 
when you guys are trolling and find that ball going WAY back on you, do you find its harder to keep your fishing line in the DR clips? seems like DR clips are an art. get it too tight and it wont come out with a fish on, not tight enough and you're constantly fiddling with it.

vegas is that place that always seems interesting at first but in about 24hrs i'm bored and ready to go home. I've done it 5 times for work. blech.

Even when you're trolling with the current, the ball shouldn't be going WAY back. The DR line was probably at 60 degrees at the most the other day when I fished at Shipwreck. I just tried to go as slow as possible, keeping it at 30-45 degrees but sometimes it's impossible when the tide is ripping. It definitely didn't affect the catching. :D With Pinks anyway.

We did have instances where the clip was false releasing. The only reason the line was slipping out of the Scotty clip was because I didn't have it on the "tight" position. Once I figured that out, I had no problem keeping it clipped. I would rather have the clip tight than to be constantly fiddling with it, bringing the DR ball up every time it false releases. You can't catch fish if your line is out of the water. On a couple of the Pinks we caught, they didn't pull the clip off but I just brought it up to the boat, hand released the clip, tightened up the slack on the line, and brought 'er in.

There are other clips that don't slip as easily as well. Pro-releases come to mind. StarCraft Tom loves 'em. Hope this helps.

Yeah I need to pick up some new clips before next week anyways, 4 days in the islands should yield better results than 2 weeks in Tacoma...

I prefer the clips good and tight too but I have had a couple times where something small is on (or a shark) and they dont even release the clip. you check bait and oh look at that... no wonder no salmon bit, the bait was already devoured by that shark! lol
 
After you've stared at the tip of a rod set in a downrigger long enough, you know what normal looks like. So when the tip is not acting normal you can safely assume that either your gear is fouled or you've got a fish on; that could be anything from a shaker to a shark to a mangaso salmon. I've caught a lot of coho and smaller chinook that didn't pop the line out of the release. When I see the tip bouncing like a fish is on, I just reel down, pull up to release from the clip, and tighten down to the fish.

I use the Scotty PowerGrip release with 50lbs braided line, and I keep it set to max holding power. When I start experiencing false releases, I replace the yellow tips on the end. I keep a handful on the boat.

When trolling and your DR line has an extreme angle because of tidal current, one trick is to periodically shift into neutral. When the DR line gets to almost vertical, shift back into gear. This will cause your bait/lure to flutter down slowly, and then back up again when you shift back into gear. It's kinda like motor-mooching with a DR. Most of my strikes come right after I shift back into gear.
 
Here are the pics from the very successful fishing trip at Shipwreck, Tuesday August 20th. As you can tell I'm very excited because I've never limited with 8 fish on the boat before. Can't wait to go out this weekend!

Nice, As I cruise at 38 thousand feet on my way back to seattle. In flight wifi is cool. I can wait until sunday. i have to work tomorrow but if I sell a house its well worth it. Might go monday also to make up for the weekend.
 
08/24-08/25

Saturday - Slow day for me. Fished from sunup to about 4pm. A lot of boats out so fished center of the straight. Fish were much shallower this week and took a while before figuring that out. Only 2 in the boat. One from 50' and one from 60'. Saw entire schools boiling on the surface, pretty cool.

Sunday - Took my father in-law out for a trip. After the worst start to the day, turned out quite well. Locked the keys in the car at the marina with all the gear still loaded up. After waiting over an hour for a locksmith, we got to fishing after 8 and promptly lost a DR ball due to an unseen kink in the cable. Had a spare and terminal kit. Fixed that and fished until 1:30. Ended up with 5 in the box, lost one at the boat and released one smaller blackmouth. All fish came at 50'. A lot different then the last couple weeks of fishing at 100'-120'. Boats thinned out yesterday and most fish were caught in 150'-350' feet of water between Shipwreck and Picnic Point.

We went out on Saturday and it was very slow. Most people I talked to said they caught 1 or 2. We caught 2 but had to work for them. I'm guessing the Purse Seiners and Gill Netters were affecting the bite with the PS sitting right in the middle of Humpy Hollow. I too noticed tons of fish jumping. I did try going shallow but no luck. Caught our two at 80' and 100'.

I heard Sunday was better too. I might try going out Wednesday morning and either Saturday or Sunday. Coho should be coming in strong by next weekend so I'll have to change my tactics to target them as well.

Limited out in middle of shipping channel off Shipwreck yesterday, 8/28. Fish jumping all over the place, close to having one in the boat! Found them from 45-50 feet on the cable.

Will be out there this weekend, maybe looking for Coho action! further south or over by Possession.
 
Tues 8/27 - Afternoon run out was slower. One coho center channel @ 60ft and one pink near shipwreck also @ 60ft.

Thurs 8/29 - Took my dad out this AM. Got on the water around 7, dropped the crab pots and rounded the corner past the ferry. Dropped gear and had 6 in the box in an hour and a half. All came @ 60ft. Marked a waypoint at the first fish and caught the rest within a hundred yards of the it. Could have limited but kept 2 spots open and made the change up for coho. Trolled for 3-4 hours. Hooked into something decent but lost it before getting it to the boat. No other action in search of silver. Hopefully soon. I think today was my last run for pinks. Freezer is full enough of them to last the winter. Pulled the 2 pots on the way in and found 4 nice dungy's.

While I think they just may need a bit more time, if anybody finds the trick for coho, I'd love to hear!

Way to go Patrick! Sounds like a great day on the water with your dad tcr!

I had a great Coho season last year, like everyone else. Funny thing was, different things worked at different times. White hoochies, green and white coho killers, green flashers, silver dodgers etc. different depths too. I did find a good spot in Edmonds that became my go to spot.

Best advice would be to go out, experiment until something clicks. Hopefully when the coho come in big numbers, they will be biters like last year. Unfortunately with this early rain, I hope they don't get lockjaw.

I'll probably see some of you out there this weekend.

TCR-Way to go!

I like a short leader for coho, 28-30" behind a flasher of your choice. Cut some strips from herring, 1/4" wide 2" long and salt them overnight. Hang the strip on the top hook of a glow hoochie and troll fast, 3-4 mph sog. Depth 30-60' at daylight and then down 10 feet each hour. John's Sporting Goods website has more particulars on coho in his newsletter for September or if you buy his book. That's where I learned to start and then got info from friends and of course, lots of experimenting.

We had another Epic day on the water. Best fish haul ever on C-Dancer on Sunday, Sep 1st. Caryn and I picked up our limit, 8 fish, 4 Coho and 4 Pink!

Caryn was definitely the Coho Killer, she hauled in 3 Coho, including two pigs, a 10lber and 9lber. The highlight of the day was picking up a double on Coho, what a hoot! Thanks Patrick from Kim Christine for giving us the intel about the west side of Possession Bar. It was a great day on the water!!!

We fished sj's today. Flat water and lots of fish. 7 pinks in ice chest. Released 4 wild silvers. Lost 4 more pinks. We had several doubles. Me holding two rods while susan netted.
