Getting a bigger than planned tax refund Thought I'd maybe make a couple of upgrades to the boat. So who in the greater Seattle area has the patterns and makes Radar archs for a 22 C-Dory. Want all the usual mounting points for VHF, GPS & radar antennas plus maybe 4 rod holders? Also high enough to slip the end of an inflatable under. About what am I looking to pay for it? Thanks all

Here is the response I got from Tanner Manufacturing when I asked them the same question about a year ago:

Thank you for contacting us about a radar arch for your 22' C-Dory. I have attached our price list. The base price for a tall (18") rooftop radar arch would be $895.00 for 1 1/4" tubing or $1,149.00 for 1 1/2" tubing. This includes the radome mounting plate and two antenna plates on top, and one horizontal crossmember on each side. You can add additional antenna plates, crossmembers on the side, etc. We recommend adding the U.S.C.G. approved 360 degree swiveling anchor light for $129.00. Typical timeframe for an arch is two weeks. If you haven't already, I encourage you to visit our website at www.radararch.com and view rooftop arches in the radar arch and gallery sections. If you have any questions or would like to move forward with an order, please call us at the number below.

Would the same RADAR Arch pattern applicable to a C-Dory 22' apply to a C-Dory made Venture 23'?

I realize our Venture is obviously different from the 22's but would the differences require an entirely different RADAR arch or should the same arch be usable? Afraid I have not looked closely enough at the roofline differences.

Tanks for any input on the subject.

You want the "feet" of a radar arch to fit exactly, to avoid any space under under them, and to evenly distribute the weight. The Venture molds were new and not recycled C Dory molds, so there could be some significant differences in angle and curvature as well as position.

I have had the metal worker fit the arch to the boat when custom made. if a standard pattern, then that may not be necessary.
 
I had a fishing rod rack that did not fit the exact cabin top curvature on my 22' CD. I solved it by making teflon tapered (wedges) pads under the feet. Through bolted and they work well.

Yep; them. They have the patterns for the arches; used to build them for the factory. Stop in and tell them what all you want to attach (antennas, rods, lights, etc.) and they'll do it up.
 
Factory quoted me a price for the high radar arch for 22 Cruiser of $830 four days ago. This did not include packaging and shipping (and probably not the rod holders, either).
 
Try Bolton Stainless, they did a great job for us when we had them build the arch for our CD 25, the pictures are on there website.

We have the factory tall arch on Valkyrie and have been very happy with it. I installed three rod holders on each side crossbar and our Achilles slides right under the arch whether upright or inverted. Note: we have the tall top option, so if you have the standard height top you should have plenty of room.

It's wonderful to get a refund, and don't forget the radar to go on the arch. If it's one or the other, I'd get the radar.

That said, if the factory price for an arch is reasonably near the quotes posted above, why wouldn't you get it from the factory? It would fit right on, and you don't have to answer questions such as " Why didn't you tell me there was a (something) there?" You could also drive to the factory and see what you're getting. The shipping should pay for the trip.

Bolton used to make the bow rails and such for C-Dory. I am not sure who is doing this now.
I bought a radar arch from them for Sensei and was able to work it out with them to have it delivered when they brought a load to the factory. I was able to meet him out on I-5 at my exit and was a great experience with them.
I would highly recomend them. you can see pics of the arch in Sensei album
 
Thanks all. I didn't think of the factory, figured they sourced them out to about 15 different venders over the years. Will try them maybe eliminate all the guess work.
 
I just purchased one for my 22' from Pooderbuilt. They are located just north of bellingham 1/4 mile off I-5. $765 for the tall arch. Dwayne used to build all the custom work for SeaSport and now is doing the arches for Triton. EQ is mounting it for me. One decision you have to make is whether to use shoulder washers for backing or buy an extra set of feet. I opted for the feet but in looking at two 22's at Les's shop I saw one mounted each way. An extra set of feet for backing cost $38 but they will spread out the stress much better.
 
I would suspect that the factory is outsourcing any of its metal fabrication. I don't know if they put on a surcharge--or since they buy in some volume that they might get it cheaper and pass the savings on to you.
 
I just spoke with Scott at the factory about the very same subject . Pooderbuilt and Tanner are both doing different parts of different boats . I think the 22 would be Pooderbuilt . I have dealt with Mark Tanner before and he makes nice stuff . Probably cant go wrong with any of the abovementioned vendors.

I am not quite sure what you mean by extra set of feet. Notice that you don't have photos, so if their is anyone out there that can direct me to some shots of what Lloyd is talking about I would be thankful.

Chuck - at the bottom of the radar arch on each leg, a "foot" of roughly 3" in diameter is welded on. Think of it as a large washer with an internal diameter equal to the outer diameter of the rail used to construct the arch and an external diameter of 3". The foot will usually have 3-4 holes in it to allow one to bolt it to the roof of the boat. The "extra set of feet" that Lloyd is referring to is essentially a matched set of these large "washers" (matching size and hole pattern). It's used on the inside of the roof to spread the load from the nuts that are secured inside when the arch is bolted down. Alternatively, one can use large fender washers or a square plate to spread the load. The extra feet look nicer and spread the load more evenly. When I installed a radar arch on my old '22, I just used large fender washers.
 
When it came to the stainless railings and handles I made the choice to keep everything local, Pooderbuilt does all the stainless railings, radar arches and handles for the 16' angler to the 26' Venture and the Osprey's, and Tanner Manufacturing does all the stainless railings, radar arches and handles for the 25' Tomcat, and Skagit Orcas.
