Radar Removal

My NEW Radar arrived this morning and spent the day messing about trying to figure out where to put the radar display.The display ends up blocking your view no matter where i put it. I don't want to put it where my old radar display was....also it would of been nice if a mounting template for the Radar dome was included. All there is besides the two radar display to scale templates..is a foam pad with holes in it and a not to scale drawing in the manual. Any suggestions.. Tug

Is the foam pad meant to go under the dome on the "roof"? If so, use it to locate your holes. I like the overhead location of the display, get it up where you can see it w/o taking your eyes from where you're headed. You'll get used to it.

I have my Furuno 1715 display hanging off the overhead shelf. When folded up it is completely out of the way. When folded down (70 degree angle), it blocks part of the view out the window, but just sky. It does come near obscuring the horizon for me, which is most important. I'm 6'0" by the way.

I'd recommend trying this location even if it means relocating something else (i.e. VHF).
 
Charlie...not sure what the holes in the foam pad are for...they do not match the mounting holes on the underside of the Radar dome...i will just have to make my own template...but you think Furuno would supply one....overhead it is...


Just called Furuno in Wa and there is no template for positioning the mounting holes for the radome...you just measure out the holes and DRILL..Tug :shock:
 
Tug, make your own template. Turn the dome upside down, out a piece of paper on it, rub it with a pencil around the hole locations.

Presto... A template :lol:

What Charlie said is what I had to do with mine . Is kind of a pain that they did not include a template. Easy peasy
 
Okay.. i have the template and holes marked to drill..i see that most people with radar have them mounted on pedestals or a tube structure in which to run the radar cable down..When you mount the radar..Furuno 1715 directly on then cabin top do you route the radar cable through a hole in the cabin top and how do you seal it ...or do you route the radar cable along the roof line and back into the cabin through a hole in the bulkhead..I looked for pictures of Furuno radar on C-Dories but there are none showing this ..Tug

Some mount on a radar arch, tall or short, some on pedestals. In those cases the cables run inside the mount and there is little need to seal the cable hole well as long as the pedestal or arch is sealed well to the cabin top.

Tug, I suspect that you will want to use a deck type wire seal. This one comes in three sizes up to around 1/2 inch.

Another reason to think about a pedestal -- if you need to send it in for service, you just unbolt it. If you mount the flat radar base to the curved roof, that will mean a lot of sealant and therefore a pain to get it off again.

Ours is on a low radar arch, but I wish we had a high one so we could fit a dinghy better, or 2 kayaks.
 
I have it mounted to the cabin roof and i routed the cable through a >>' HOLE " << in the roof.. Will install the display unit tomorrow and fire her when the 3M 4200 Quick Set is hardened, probably Sunday....will post pictures.


Can you use West System Epoxy to seal the roof hole with the cable in it???

I wouldn't think that would work very well for a couple of reasons. One is that epoxy (even the "flex" type) is basically pretty hard. So it does better on rigid substrates. The other is that it would probably not stick well to cable jacket.

I can't see your installation, but I would lean towards a "cable clam," or an appropriate caulk, whichever seemed better given your specifics.
 
I just got back looking all over town for ...wire plugs/deck type wire seals/ cable clams..just none to be had. I will have to order a cable clam if i want to go the route....I can seal up my hole with 3M 4200 for now and when i get the cable clam i can switch over.

Problem is that i have already drill the hole and enlarging it to accept the cable clam may be a problem, but i am not sure how cable clams work... If i remember correctly i drilled a 1 inch hole just large enough for the display plug to pass through it. Tug
 
Very good idea, any recommendations on what size cable clam would you need for a already drilled i inch hole. Tug
 
There are 3 connectors and all are greater than 1" in diameter.
What is the diameter of the cable?
 
Brent..book says cable has diameter of 12 mm = 0.4724 inches

Was going to post some pictures of the installation but PhotoBucket will not let me unless i install a bunch of programs i don't want...Will put the pics in my album when i am done. Tug
