Replacing Morse Command 2 Steering

I have a 1989 cruiser and I am planning to replace the steering. As best as I can tell I have the original Morse Command 2 helm. I am leaning towards replacing the steering with a Teleflex NFB 4.2 rotary system. I have read over some of the posts relating to mechanical versus hydraulic but for my use the mechanical seems fine (and is lower cost).

My question is whether anyone has done a similar upgrade and, in particular, if the new helm will require any additional holes for mounting. My understanding is that some of the hydraulic helms push the steering wheel further out but I'm hoping that the NFB 4.2 will have the same clearance as the Command 2 (the clearance is a bit tight sometimes with legs).

Any help, insights, or gotchas would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Karl

Karl, on a different brand boat I did what you are considering. I don't remember the difference in bolt pattern, but that does not have to be an issue--there are ways to fill and redrill if absolutely necessary. The NFB steering is a huge improvement--and you should be happy with it.

Dr. Bob,

Thanks for the reply. I really think the NFB will be a huge improvement. My steering has a lot of slop in it and it really will be nice to have steering that doesn't require constant fighting. My main concern was with the clearance of the wheel. I'm sure I can figure out the installation.

Many thanks again. It sure is nice to have so many folks with years of boating experience to draw on. I'm trying to learn but it sure does give a measure of reassurance to be able to draw on folks knowledge. It has been said many times before but boy this is a great group!

Many thanks,

Karl

Hi Karl‚

I‛m still running the Morse Command II on Adeline. Cable is part# 300622-228 (19 foot).

When I looked into this upgrade a while back a brand called Uflex caught my eye. I'm away from my computer now (posting on handheld ppc) or I'd post links.

However‚ this might be helpful.

I seem to recall that the Uflex had some advantages (planetary gear system ???) but my memory of the details is a little foggy.

Whichever way you go I hope you'll share the details of your installation. This project is STILL on my agenda.
