SO WHAT DID YOU DO WITH OR ON YOUR C-DORY TODAY??

Now folks, I'm the wife (Sally) of Captain's Choice ( Charlie) and I have absolutely no idea what' I'm doing here. Except i'm willing to give it a try. "Himself" as the captain ( Navy ret) tends to describe himnself as, is abed and I'm too wakeful so here I am giving this a try. wHAT DID WE DO TODAY? Well, we tok Girl-child $2 iNGA and her girl child #2 NIKKI ACROSS THE POTMAC RIVER TO A LUNCH ANCHORAGE AT sAITNT MARY'S, A CHARMING MARYLAND PORT. oops sorry about all those capitals. Anyway, both girl childs did a bit of "Papa" directed boat driving and had a ball. We even got back to the home pier before the line of thunder bumpers went through. good time had by all. May everyone reading my words be able to say the same.

Spent the weekend doing some wiring. I had bought an aft bilge pump about 6 weeks ago and had mounted the pump base and float switch then - only this week did I get around to wiring it in. Of course, what started as a little job, expanded a bit to 10 hours and a couple $100. Want to find sealed in-line flat fuse holders but could only find round ones - didn't want to have to carry two kinds of fuses. Also couldn't easily find SPST switches that were sealed and mounted in a round hole. So.... I found a set of 6 SPST switches that had the kind of fuse holders I wanted included and had sealed (with boots) switches.

Cut a piece of 3/4" oak plywood that's about 5 3/4" by 10" - put a cut-out in it to mount the switch panel. Sealed it up with several coats of varnish and mounted under the gunnel aft. Wired the aft bilge pump to one fused switch and used one as a by-pass for the float switch so I have an "On" and a "Man Aft". Used a 3rd switch to run 12 V to the manual operation wire on the forward bilge pump. I can now manually run either pump from the cockpit where I can see the water level, both will run from float switches when simply left in the "On" position. Will feel better next time I'm in the big swells or simply sleeping on board now that I have a second fixed bilge pump. Still had 3 switches and plenty of wire left over.

Used one switch (#4) to supply 12V to a newly installed 12V plug in the cockpit. Had always wanted a 12V outlet back there. I have a third, emergency bilge wired to a 12V jack with about 15-20' of wire so I could plug that in back there to help dewater a nearby (small) vessel. Also wanted a jack into which I could plug a lantern, 12V Xmas lights etc.

Switch #5 goes to a newly purchased swivel spot light for in the cockpit - never had a light back there, always needed one. This is a bright one - the 3000 cp, 35W Seafit with a swivel base. Have all the wiring ready for this - still need to mount it. It will be mounted on the aft bulkhead, above the starboard aft window. Was thinking about mounting it centered but it's easy enough to hit your head already on the way in the door.

That leaves one switch left over - I have that one planned for more cockpit lighting. I'm going to order some 12V with rope light to run under the gunnels and motor motor well. That will provide some soft "mood" lighting for the after sundown sundowners and should also be useful for general lighting on those early morning fishing trips. I'll post some pics when it's all done.

Hey Roger,

With the rope lights I would suggest using the red ones. This way it won't hurt your night vision. I've seen this done on a couple of guide boats and the effect is very nice. You have enough light to keep from tripping on things yet it doesn't hurt your night vision.
 
PINCH ME!............I can't believe it!, I finally got "Sea Shift" out on the water. Been too darn busy since its' last trip out on 4/5.

Friday C, J, the dog and I departed the Everett Launch and cruised to the Port of Poulsbo. The cruise down got "bumpy" just off Possession and remained so until we reached Port Madison. (Just slowed 'er down and set 'er on autopilot and listened to those twin Johnsons purr). Spent Fri. and Sat. night at Poulsbo. (Hit the bakery...of course, on Sat. and Sun. am). Got a page Saturday to go to work on Monday AM.....(even though I'm on vacation....had to be back Sunday evening anyhow).
Return trip Sunday, via quick cruise into Bremerton, then to Blake Island, Elliott Bay (Seattle), then up to Everett via a quick fuel stop for some extra fuel at Port of Edmonds. Weather fantastic Sunday, clear sunny sides 70's to 80's with flat seas.
While arriving in Everett we met a young man who said, "Nice boat, my folks have one". I said, "are they C-Brats?". He said, "yes from the vessel "Judy Blue Eyes".
(I actually, was surprised I didn't see any C-Dorys on the water over the weekend).
 
Nice to hear from you, Dave. Real nice. We have been missing you, for sure. Thought maybe you fell out of the treehouse or something. Glad to hear you had such a great - and well deserved - day or two on the water.

Judy Blue Eyes? I know that vessel! Wonderful boat.
 
Dave - good to see you posting, now we got to see you with the rest of us at a CBGT! At Blakely we were down to the third string Rev (me) with you missing when Rev Jim's own Laurna Jo needed christening...
 
I been going to town since I fixed the trailer. Installed a new bilge pump, rewired a new control for it, cleaned the boat... Not as well as catman might have but it is much much better. I even waxed it a bit. Not much left to do. It must be about time to go get it bloody again.
 
Mounted my outriggers today. Man talk about a pucker factor. Got to drill 2, 2" holes at a 45 degree angle. Libations were necessary before and after but I didntt have time to partake. I also drilled a hole for a 12 volt recepticle and then I made 2 more holes to house the new secondary bilge pump controls. I sure hope my boat still floats with all these holes :lol: I still need to do another coat of wax, clean out all the tools and non fishing stuff, load all teh fishing stuff and head to the beach by tomorrow afternoon. A pretty tall order but I am incented and should make it there.
Gonna get Junior into his first Halibut Thursday with any luck, then spend the next 3 days focusing on Tuna with the new outriggers.
I sure need to get some time on the boat. I am tired of working on it.
 
Yippee, the radar arch is installed and solid as a rock. Survived my first encounter with 3M5200 -holy cow that stuff adhere to anything and everything including one's hands. Great tip to use WD40 or Finger Nail Polish Remover (acetone) to remove the uncured.

Does anything remove it once it is cured?

Now the next project is installing the 1623 Furno and redoing the Canvas so it will fit over the arch.

Anybody been down the canvas road? How much should I expect it is going to cost?
 
sheesh, all you need now is a russian flag on that vessel and you'd have a real fishy looking rig. Those are pretty cool, what did they set you back?
I read the tuna info and sometimes get to thinking but, damn I think with all the ice and tuna support equipment on board I'd have enough room left in the cockpit for one fisherman and one tuna.
How many tuna trips have you made in that rig and how does it do for room to fish?

I carry the commercial half tote loaded with Ice, a 150 quart cooler loaded with ice, an 80 or sometimes another 150 quart loaded with ice and a lunch cooler. I have room for 2 fishermen besides myself and it works out fine. Last year I went out 8 days in a row Tuna fishing, I do NOT recommend it. This year I have only been out once.
I love Tuna fishing... there is nothing quite like it. Once you experience the warm blue water and all the sea life that frequent it you are bound and you will return. I can't NOT do it.
I got a screaming deal on the outriggers. $400 shipped. They had been used 1 season and had a few minor scratches. I am sure I will put a few more on before I am done with them. This set up new is about $900.
 
I have thought about doing the out rigger set up for many years. The cost seemed to be prohibitive. Also trolling for salmon with out riggers when there are 50 other boats, w/o out riggers, doing the same could result in a giant mess.
Your set up looks great. Good luck fishing with it.
 
We cruised over to Lopez Islander Resort friday afternoon and spent the night there visiting with Sea3PO and fishtales crews.we had a very enjoyable time and had a great visit.
Saturday about noon time we decided to pull out and head back to Deception Pass via the Southern route thru cattle pass and arpond Iceberg pt and East accross Rosario strait
We left in bright sunlight and the closer to cattle pass the fog set in. we were flying on instruments all the way till we passed under the Deception Pass Bridge.
Thank goodness for Radar and GPS. it was really spooky seeing blips on the radar and then all of a sudden there in the mist would be another boat. we were getting close to Aleck Bay on the southern tip of Lopez and I had been watching this blip get closer coming up on our backside when all of a sudden this big Blue Cattamaran (the Victoria Clipper) appears out of nowhere and pases us. I kept saying to Lisbeth that there was something behind us and she would keep watching and saying there was nothing there....lol.... till ,POP, there it was.
as we got close to Deception Pass the fog was so thick that you could not see the banks on either side running down the middle chanel. there was a 30 -35 ft cruiser sitting off the channel and as we went past them they pulled in behind us and followed us through the channel.If it wasn.t for the GPS track back feature that I was able to follow from the previous day I would probably still be sitting out there waiting for the fog to lift.
all in all it was a very enjoyable trip and I was actualy thankful for all the times I had the radar on in good weather and able to practice with it seeing blips and recognizing them .

How far offshore do you have to run for tuna ? How warm is the "warm blue water" and what other species of fish do you pick up ? For that matter which type of tuna do you catch ?

How far offshore do you have to run for tuna ? Depends on the water. Anywhere from 20 to 60 miles off shore.

How warm is the "warm blue water? I start fishing from about 59 to 61 degrees and have seen 65 degree water.

what other species of fish do you pick up ? For that matter which type of tuna do you catch? Well I have not been fortunate enough to catch any exotic pelagics yet but I have seen them. Bilfish have been spotted but not by me. We are targeting Albacore Tuna. Bluefin have been caught as have yellowtail and even Dorado but the later two are very rare indeed.

I worked on the boat today to prepare for Mondays run to the Tuna grounds. The weather looks so good that I called my boss and told him 10 weeks off wasn't enough. I needed 2 more days off because the planets have aligned and I need to go get more Tuna. I am not sure how I am getting back but I am headnig to the beach this afternoon.
Tried that Nu Finish soft paste wax today, it is great!
I also found the bottom of both gunnels and cleaned out all the crap and sort of organized them. I took everything out of the rear seat box and went through it. I tightened and replaced a few screws while I was in there. Looks like my inside door handle is toast. It fell off one too many times and broke. I even lost the set screw this time. Bummer. Plenty of time to fix that later.
 
Since I was on injured reserve from work, I did manage to:
1.Installed the Keel-Guard
2.Raised the helm seat witha box affair and put a drawer in it.
3.Set up the cable runs for the curtains.
4.Made a chart rack.
5. Made a flip down door for the electronics shelf.
6 Installed the under sink slide out racks.
7. Ordered Propulse prop..
Still more to do ..but back to work!!! :disgust
