SO WHAT DID YOU DO WITH OR ON YOUR C-DORY TODAY??

Finished 4 weeks of battling the removal and reinstallation of my hydraulic steering unit -- just to get to 2 zerk fittings on the tilt mechanism of the outboard! I will have to write up the problems (snapped SS bolts into aluminum, etc) so others might avoid what I went through.

We took a late afternoon/evening/night cruise out of Channel Islands Harbor (Oxnard, CA), there were SEVEN of us on board, 5 adults, 2 children, most had never been on a small boat before. Had to borrow 2 lifejackets. For a moment I felt a little like Captain Jim during his summer job up at Yellowstone lake, a real group event to explain the safety devices, procedures, do's and don'ts before getting underway... :shock: This was also kind of to check out of the steering system before going offshore.

We fished (2 small fish, threw them back), we fixed dinner, cleaned up, then watched a DVD movie (Black Stallion). Had a great time, good company, good conversations, kids well behaved -- and, nobody went overboard!
 
OK, so today was moving day. We brought Lizzie home from her month in Everett. On the way we dumped her in Lake Washington for a fresh water rinse. Went down to Coulon park and had a Kidd Valley burger. then continued all the way around Mercer Island and back to the 40th St. ramp in Bellevue. Lucked out cause the toll machine was (is)broken. Just so you with the big boats shouldn't think nothing ever goes wrong with a 16 footer, I did have a little problem. The boat itself has of course, no moving parts so nothing can go wrong. However, one of the direction signals went out on the trailer. On the way to Everett Marina I stopped at West Marine and get an exact duplicate of my faulty trailer light fixture. So, here's a question for you. If the driver's side light on the trailer needs to be replaced, is that a Left or a Right fixture? You should know that both me and the WM guy got it wrong. So if you would, please PM with your answer. Driver's side, LEFT or RIGHT. I will post the tally (no names) in a day or two, if I get a few responses.
 
The correct answer is RIGHT (as in left or right )

To me that seems counterintuitive. The only place you can see the lights is from the rear. And that would be left. But they build them, they get to call them what they want.

I do recall an auto mechanic telling me that to determine the left or right location of items in/on a vehicle you face the vehicle. In the theatre, stage locations are actually opposite -house left(viewed from the audience) is the same as stage right (from the actors perspective). There is of course the story of the old ship's captain who, when he passed, was found to have a well-worn card in his shirt pocket;"left=port, right =starboard". Thanks for responding.
 
OK, so if you are driving north up the left coast somewhere, and want to turn to go to the big water, you pull the little thingy handle in the tow rig down, and you follow with a 90 to the west, didn't you just make a LEFT TURN? :smiled Now if I did that, and Mr Policeman was following me, and my Right turn light went flashing before the turn, he would write me a ticket for an incorrect turn signal. :cry Shouldn't there be some continuity and some sanity in the world somewhere? :idea: Hey Marty, next time ask the WM guy for a port side turn signal/Light fixture :wink

Had a beautiful ride out of Sequim Bay yesterday. Went looking for the tall ships, and found a couple. The "Lady Washington", and the "Hawaiian Chieftain" were racing to Port Townsend and we had a couple of VIP guests with us, (Son and Daughter-in-law) and we got some terrific pictures. Gorgeous flat water, some nice rollers and a bonus, a Submarine running interference for the sail ships.

Took a few hours off and did a little trip out of Everett. We got off the dock around 4PM and have our crab pots in the water by 4:45. High slack was around 6:30. 3 pots, 2 pulls = 4 legal dungies. We cooked up two for a late dinner and froze the other two. Life is good.
 
In the automotive repair business I learned early on there is no right or left only driver side or passenger side.

The variety of ships, boats, etc. was interesting, and while helping out on a Coast Guard Auxiliary boat I noticed a 16', a 22' and a 24' C-Dory as well as a Ranger 25. I rode on a comfortable large older boat and appreciate simple things such as the grab bar on our boats even more. It is fun seeing what other boats are like and what is involved with them. I have now been on 3 in the 35-45 ft. size and goodness the differences from our boats is dramatic in so many ways. I love the simple clean lines, the efficient use of space and the ability to get in and out of spaces quickly on our smaller boats.

I am still searching for ways to muffle the engine noise besides earplugs. The 2 strokes must have been quite noisy since I hear others say how quiet the 4 strokes are :P

This is the first time I've had a chance to post in the last couple of days.

I went out fishing with my youngest son and his girlfriend on Saturday, July 5th. It was the first time I was to fish Elliott Bay, that beautiful bay that borders downtown Seattle for those not familiar. I took my son Jordan out for the first time since he was a kid the weekend before with no luck so he kept complaining that he (and his older brother) had never caught a fish of any significant size in his entire 24 years.

Well that changed in a hurry as we caught a nice 7lb King Salmon on the first drop off the downrigger! He did a great job of bringing it in and we were off searching for more. :D Several hours later, we caught a 2nd, this time a strong-fighting 12lber. It was a great day on the water and a wonderful way to share an afternoon of boating on the water with my son and his girlfriend. I think he's finally hooked on fishing now! :thup We attributed our luck to his girlfriend; that was the first time she ever went fishing. I think she thinks this fishing thing is pretty easy. It's amazing how we did so well fishing in our own backyard. I'll post pics later.
 
Well, we woke up this morning with Daydream swinging on the hook on Chuckanut Bay, back over to Hilton Harbor by 8:30 a.m., cleaned 'er up, and back to reality by noon ...but what a great long weekend!

We got an early start on the weekend, I left work at noon on Thursday the 3rd, up to Hilton Harbor, got the boat in the water and ran all the way over to Squalicum Harbor (for the unfamiliar, that voyage is measured in yards, not miles!), where Halcyon was already at the visitor's dock. Out to the wonderful Colophon Cafe in Fairhaven for supper with Bill and El (and their son Brad, and grandsons Bryce and Tye) and Ruth and Joe of R-Matey. I recommend the Spice African Peanut Soup with bread, but it is all good!

Friday the 4th we all just lounged on the boats at the visitor's dock at Squalicum, reading, playing games, playing computer, whatever, and in the afternoon up to Ruth and Joe's house for a light supper. Bryce and Tye rowed Baxter all around Squalicum Harbor in the dinghy, he loved it! The Haggan Family's Fireworks Show that night was undoubtedly the best display I have ever seen.

Saturday the 5th we cruised at a leisurely 6 knots more or less (I set the RPMs at 2,000 and let the speed float with the wind and current) to Tombolo Cove (it probably does have a name but that is what we call it because that is what it is) on Decatur Island for lunch. On the way, we dropped our crab pots out in front of Center Island, and then headed for the cove. Halcyon and Daydream both managed to their props mired in eel grass in very shallow water, it was not a pretty sight! But we struggled free! Afer lunch we ran back to Center Island for a short but pleasant visit with Chris and Janet of Luna C. Chris took us out to pull our pots in his Twin Vee - five keepers, our first dungies in a very long time!

After saying goodbye to Chris and Janet, we decided to go to Spencer Spit on Lopez rather than the original plan of spending the night at Tombolo because the boys wanted to camp ashore, and Decatur Island is all private property. As it turned out, the Spencer Spit campground was full. Patty cooked up some awesome teriyaki salmon on the BBQ for dinner. Threw the crab pots in tied to the boat until dark, no bait, two more dungies!

The next morning after breakfast, we had intended to go to Eagle Cove on Cypress Island, but there was a last minute change of plans and we went to James Island instead (sorry David), where we had a huge crab feast at one of the picnic tables right at the crest of James Island. Then, since we had to be back at Hilton Harbor in the morning, and we bid adieu to our friends in the early afternoon, and ran back to Chuckanut Bay to anchor for the night, where this tail began way back in the first paragraph!

We did the entire cruise at 2,000 RPM, covering a total of 60 miles and burning only 11 gallons of gas, or about 5.5 statute miles per gallon. I think there is going to be a LOT of 2,000 RPM cruising in our future...



 
Lori and I are docked at Rosario while we wait for my cousin to finish reflooring, recarpeting and repainting our house. Not very exciting but just what the Dr. ordered to compensate for weeks of disruption in our house.

I'm at home after about 10 hours at work. Hence being docked at Rosario sound way exciting to me!!! Hope you two have a good time! :cocktail
 
Not much activity on SleepyC over the weekend, but planning on getting off work early Tuesday PM and launching from Sequim Bay, Again, out looking for the tall ships. If anybody sees the "HMS Bounty" heading anywhere between Tacoma and Port Townsend, I would sure love to hear about it, (time and location) would be great.
