Today was one of those 6AM, when 84 years old. you want to stay in bed a few more hours. But two dogs had to be "walked" and fed. (Marie takes the late shift, I the early shift).
I needed to paint the plastic on the mid section of the Honda 150. Almost all of the paint had peeled off in sheets about 2 to 3" wide and 6" long the last time I washed the boat, just from the pressure of the garden hose!
The plastic in the center was stained and soft. I thought perhaps a little oil had leaked there, or from the exhaust relief above. Anyway a putty knife and scraper took off about 80% of all of the paint. Then 120 and 240 grits with orbital sanders got the surface clean and feathered in the remaining solid paint. I then hand sanded with 400 and 600 grits. Finally wiped with isopropyl alcohol, to remove any oils, and tack clean.
I had decided on Krylon metallic silver spray paint. There were a couple of small areas in the aluminum just above the anti ventilation plate were the paint had bubbled and there was corrosion under. I might as well paint the skeg. Those had to be sanded by hand, and taken to bright bare aluminum, also wiped down with Isoproply alcohol. I had a spray can of Strontium Chromate Primer for the raw aluminum. Well, the spray nozzle had fallen off since I had last used the can...I try and press the cap back in....yep yellow primer all over, including the Permatrim. The motor and back of the boat were all masked off, but not Bob, and his face and glasses, hand and shirt! Now no spray can functioning, and a big puddle of Chromate. The gloved right hand became the paint brush. Did a decent job. Let it set up a few minutes, and then the color coat.
The Krylon metallic Silver is very close to the Honda Paint. I put multiple thin coats on all of the plastic lower cowl, the small corroded area, and the skeg. I'll see how it looks but probably in a week or two wet sand with 600/ 1000/2000 and compound, then clear coat and it will be so close that you cannot tell the difference from 2 to 3 feet away. If its not close enough, then, I'll buy the "Honda" official paint...and give it another coat.
I used the Krylon because of past experience bolding well to plastics. It seemed to set up well by this evening. Lacquer thinner removed the Chromate from the Permatrim, my hand and spots elsewhere. Fortunately Zep degreaser and warm water took the Chromate off my glasses... Guess I'll have to buy a new can of Chromate!
