SO WHAT DID YOU DO WITH OR ON YOUR C-DORY TODAY??

Two boating days in a row - yesterday with friends in their Bayliner over to Blake Island - thought it was a beautiful weather day, but a little windy. Docked back in our marina just a little after sunset.

Today kids boated over, and worked my boat over and it is now gleaming clean. Then we went over to the Port Orchard fuel dock and filled it up. An even more beautiful day. Sunny again, but no wind. Although kids reported it was fairly windy earlier getting over here.

Not today, but just recently. Spent 4 days on the water, gorgous days, fall colors, clear cold nights, and great water to run on. Nearly empty docks, no lines at the fuel pump, or the out house, and the wash deck was all mine. Used up last years gas, added new -- non ethanol, Stabil and Startron plus RingFree. Good for a while and all clean and shiny, Oh, and the bottom paint was still all there when I pulled out and washed it down.

Today was one of those 6AM, when 84 years old. you want to stay in bed a few more hours. But two dogs had to be "walked" and fed. (Marie takes the late shift, I the early shift).

I needed to paint the plastic on the mid section of the Honda 150. Almost all of the paint had peeled off in sheets about 2 to 3" wide and 6" long the last time I washed the boat, just from the pressure of the garden hose!

The plastic in the center was stained and soft. I thought perhaps a little oil had leaked there, or from the exhaust relief above. Anyway a putty knife and scraper took off about 80% of all of the paint. Then 120 and 240 grits with orbital sanders got the surface clean and feathered in the remaining solid paint. I then hand sanded with 400 and 600 grits. Finally wiped with isopropyl alcohol, to remove any oils, and tack clean.

I had decided on Krylon metallic silver spray paint. There were a couple of small areas in the aluminum just above the anti ventilation plate were the paint had bubbled and there was corrosion under. I might as well paint the skeg. Those had to be sanded by hand, and taken to bright bare aluminum, also wiped down with Isoproply alcohol. I had a spray can of Strontium Chromate Primer for the raw aluminum. Well, the spray nozzle had fallen off since I had last used the can...I try and press the cap back in....yep yellow primer all over, including the Permatrim. The motor and back of the boat were all masked off, but not Bob, and his face and glasses, hand and shirt! Now no spray can functioning, and a big puddle of Chromate. The gloved right hand became the paint brush. Did a decent job. Let it set up a few minutes, and then the color coat.

The Krylon metallic Silver is very close to the Honda Paint. I put multiple thin coats on all of the plastic lower cowl, the small corroded area, and the skeg. I'll see how it looks but probably in a week or two wet sand with 600/ 1000/2000 and compound, then clear coat and it will be so close that you cannot tell the difference from 2 to 3 feet away. If its not close enough, then, I'll buy the "Honda" official paint...and give it another coat.

I used the Krylon because of past experience bolding well to plastics. It seemed to set up well by this evening. Lacquer thinner removed the Chromate from the Permatrim, my hand and spots elsewhere. Fortunately Zep degreaser and warm water took the Chromate off my glasses... Guess I'll have to buy a new can of Chromate! :)

Looks nice Bob... Good Work.

I recently had some body and paint work done on my new to me Tundra. I asked the paint shop if they would shoot the tops of my Yami outboards. No mixing or fading in, just sand off the top mess and cover it with silver and clear coat just like on the truck. Came out pretty nice too.

New paint on the Yamaha OB cowlings. Big improvement. Tundra Silver.

I believe I owe credit to SeaWolf Joe for the idea to take them into a body shope and just tell them to paint them when they get another job with the right colors.

Just think!!! If you had a single it probably would have been half the price! :P

78 degrees and sunny the past few days. Brushed off old Poli-Glo with a gallon of Simple Green ($8 at Home Depot) and swiped on 6 new coats in 1.5 hours with their 10" mitt.

We're taking a break to a Marco Island VRBO rental condo for 2 weeks next Sunday. Happy 80 degree sunny weather to you too!

Cheers!

I'm working on getting my windlass installed - if any of you are scratching your head about how to locate the drain hole in the anchor rode locker, this is how I did it and it seemed to work well.

I dropped a magnet (actually a stack of two disk-type magnets) into the locker:

magnet_in.sized.jpg

Then I matched it up with magnets on the outside (I used a cloth mask to protect the finish and make it easier to remove the magnets):

magnet_out.sized.jpg

You can move the magnet on the outside around a bit to get back to the back of the locker... peek inside to see the positioning of the magnets... then mark and/or drill when you're happy with the location.

Thanks for posting the tip Gary!

Very timely as our Lewmar 700 Pro Fish showed up at the door just yesterday. No more, as my wife would like to call it, "ghetto", milk crate tied to the foredeck.

Congrats! Same model I chose.

Nice!! Yeah, I wanted the free fall option since we beach the boat so much. I'm hoping I can just release the anchor and drag it up on the beach somewhere to set it.

Thing is a brick!! I was a little surprised with how much it weighs.

No kidding!

These are the magnets I used, by the way... very strong... the magnets on the outside of the hull will find the inside magnets anywhere in the rode locker. You probably want to at least put them on the right side of the boat to minimize the high speed impact - ha!

Lol... Thank you Sir. Ordered!

The other day I added some mahogany furrowing strips to both sides of the upper cabin above the windows. They'll be used for attaching crap like roll -up curtains and what ever else I can think of. Glued up with 3M 5200 so they shouldn't go anywhere.

Then I made a riser to raise the helm seat 2.5 inches. Even though I'm 6' tall I always have a throw cushion under my butt when at the helm. I should be able to get rid of the throw cushion when driving and, bonus, it also makes room for a chest fridge while keeping some room for storage under the fridge shelf. Win - win.

Then, today I got busy on the sliding shelf for the fridge. I used a couple of heavy-duty, full extension, soft-close, drawer guides to mount the shelf to (22"). Pulls out nicely to allow easy access to the fridge from the galley. I'll add some pad-eyes and a strap to secure the fridge to the shelf.

The fridge is a 32 quart, 12v/ac compressor unit from Costco. Supposedly has an LG compressor in it and the guys on the Expedition Portal forum seem to like it pretty well so we'll see how it works out. For $250 I figure it's worth a shot.

We'll also use the fridge when we're out boonie crashing in the truck so I may or may not remove the wheels. We'll see how it goes.
