Merry and I went to the edge of Redondo Canyon a couple of nights last week for Blackwater dives. We hung our green fishing light overboard and waited for jellies, salps, and siphonophores to arrive. Instead, we were bombarded by millions of squid. We're hoping the swells will calm down soon so we can take photos on the sand to see the eggs and the animals who feast on the dead squid.

I took my newly acquired 2004 C-Dory 16 Cruiser on its maiden voyage. This is the first boat I’ve owned (besides kayaks), and it’s been 30+ years since I’ve launched or retrieved a boat. Things went pretty good and the boat is impressive.

I stuck close to my normal kayaking places, but I’m looking forward to many adventures.

After nearly sixteen years at Port Royal Marina in Redondo Beach, Merry and I moved No Pressure to its new home in Portofina Marina. We're only a hundred feet or so from our old slip, but it feels like a whole new world. We have cement docks instead of the rickety wooden docks at Port Royal. We tried for a few years to get them to fix the dock floats with no luck. Our old slip had docks that felt as if you were land-surfing. Our neighbor had a dock step that took up so much of the dock that we nearly fell in the water every time we hooked up the hose to rinse our starboard motor.

The restrooms at Port Royal were in need of repair for years as well. One of the toilets in the women's restroom has been out of order all year. There are over two hundred slips at Port Royal, but only two decent dock carts for the entire marina. Portofino Marina has two carts for every gangway. The restrooms are private with a shower in each one. We also have use of the Portofino Hotel pool, jacuzzi, and gym, plus a 25% discount at their restaurant and a discount at the fuel dock. I think we will be happy here.

This last week Mostly Harmless (C-Dory 16 Cruiser) took part in the Erie Canal Bicentennial Voyage of the replica 1825 Canalboat Seneca Chief. We joined the flotilla from Buffalo to Lockport, overnighted, and then were the only escort from Lockport to Medina. She did a good job of making the other boats look big.

I was one of over 200 volunteers who helped build this replica from scratch-- it's 73 feet long, 12.5 feet wide, and made from raw slabs of wood (except the marine plywood on the roof). I've later crewed the canalboat from Fairport to Newark to Lyons, and will join it again next week on the Hudson.

Following the Canal Corp tugboats was interesting- the wash could make the bow turn at any time. Overall she did great, and was pretty comfortable to sleep on at the marina.

The voyage is getting a lot of attention here in NYS, and it is cool to see my little C-Dory show up in some of the videos and photos of the first part of the voyage.

I even passed a big sister C-Dory at the lift bridge in Medina! The canalboat crew was enamored with the C-Doy (and unfamiliar with it) and tickled to see their 2nd one ever at the same time.

We replaced our V-Berth cushions with thicker, more comfortable ones. Good Vibrations Canvas in Marina del Rey did a great job. They completed the job two months ahead of schedule. They were very busy and said it may take three months. It took only one month, and it was a lot less expensive than I expected. The average cost for this job was around $3,000. Rick charged us $1,000.

Just got back from replacing the faucet for our sink. The original faucet spigot snapped off. I replaced it with a faucet that was too small, but we don't use it much, so I left it alone for several years. It began leaking last week. I found the same model as the original. We now have lots of water pressure, and it doesn't leak onto the edge of the sink. Merry is happy.

Well it's been a busy spring! After coming back from 3 weeks in the Keyes and then the Hontoon get together, we went to Italy for 3 weeks. After coming back, I hustled to get the boat preped for my month cruise of the Bahamas.

Well I'm now finishing up that cruise and I'm up in the Berry Islands and will be heading back to Bimini on Thursday and then West Palm Beach on Friday. Normally May is my favorite month in the Bahamas, but this year it was the windiest May that I have ever experienced! I had a 2 day window the 6th and 7th of this month then it's been blowing 20+ almost the whole time that I've been here and now they'll be a 2 to 3 day window this weekend with nothing else in the foreseeable future. So that kinda forces me to come back lest my cruising permit expires waiting on a future window. Other than the wind, little diving and spearfishing, I have no complaints.

I did have my low pressure fuel pump go out on me, but fortunately I discovered that while I was in Nassau and got Deb to DHL one down to me. While waiting for the part I ate a lot of my favorite fresh seafood at Potters Cay and explored some of the parts of New Providence Island that I haven't seen before. Thursday on my way back to Bimini I'm going to stop and dive on a wreck west of Great Harbour Cay and see if I can get a Nassau or Hogfish for dinner. Lifes good and blood pressure is down!
