BOE Marine is having a special while supplies last on the GX2100W VHF radio with AIS for 219 dollars seems like a decent price for a model that started out at 400 dollars. A new model must be in the works.

There is already a 2150. New last year. AIS receivers. $219 is about half price. I like my 2150. It also has auto fog horn and hailer capability.

The 2100 required two available NMEA ports on the nav system for full operation which many of them did not have.

The 2150 only requires a single port.

For awhile both were built but then S/H dropped the 2100.

I am relatively new to C-Brats but have been actively viewing posts for several months...

Les, I am constantly surprised and impressed with "the stuff you know..." what a wealth of helpful information... it's truly remarkable

I bought a 2150 this winter and it works well with the dual NMEA output. Most chart plotters can take data at 38400 so the 2100 might be a good deal for someone. With my antenna up at home I have picked up AIS targets at nearly 50 miles, but I am at 700 feet so that was a big help.

Picked one up today for the new boat. We have the same one on the 22 and are very happy with its performance. This is a great deal, compared to what I originally paid. If you have the two necessary NMEA ports then it is worth getting.

I know I was busier than heck on Friday (and Saturday). Sorry it took so long to respond. And thanks for the kind words!

We put a SH 2100 in Thisaway. It works great with the Garmin 541. As we went by St Francis YC in San Francisco, every committee boat had AIS on it!. It makes a lot of difference plaing your crossing of high speed ships, as well as lots of information.

The 2100 also has the hailer etc, just requires two ports and a litter harder to hook up--but all informatin is in the SH web site or THT/Garmin...

A bargin at that price. A great radio.

Incidently we run the 541 at full screen chart, with waypoints & AIS etc for the route. We halso have a 441s which we run split screen: lower is sounder and upper is detail chart, with no routes, waypoints or AIS. We have done a similar combination on several boats and like it better than one large screen. Radar is separate (no Radar on Thisaway).

The 2100 has 38400 baud output on the AIS. I belive that you will have to use a NMEA multiplexor to allow both the 38400 and standard NMEA 4800 rate. Do a google search. It has been done, with several units. You might be better off with a different AIS unit.

Tom, For the price of the Multiplexer, you can spring for the SH (Gtx, I believe) 2150. It will work with your older C-80, AND you WILL like it.

As an aside, I just found out my "older" C-120 will not work with my RayMarine 218 that I put in last year in order to have 2 VHF's. Because, since then I put in the SH 2150 and the GPS is hooked to it via a multiplexer. Problem appears hat the C-120 and the Ray218 generate a never ending loop with the GPS signal if they receive a DSC call or if I tried to use the red button emergency system on the 218.

That info came from the electronic gurus at Rodgers Marina in Portland. Certainly worth having them in your corner for anything that runs on a battery power.

Sorry for the delay Tom, it's been a bit hectic here.

The short version is "not really" if you're asking about the 2100. The C-80 doesn't have the two open ports needed.

Essentially when SH did the 2100 model they truly "added" the AIS, so you still had the wires needed for the VHF NMEA hookup (4 since it's bi-directional for polling, DSC, etc) AND the wires needed for AIS.

When they updated it to the 2150 they "integrated" the AIS into the radio and then both the VHF functions and the AIS functions work on the same NMEA wires to a single port on the nav system.

That said, you could add a multiplexer to you system to make it work.
