Storage compartment install in the Gunnel on a 19' ???

I have a 2003 19' Cdory that does not have factory installed storage compartments in the gunnel walls. Does anyone know if it is possible to cut the interior side of the gunnel wall and fabricate some storage compartments. I see these on other models of Cdory's and would like to do the same with mine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
 
We owned a 2003 19 CD for 6 1/2 years. During that time Joe installed the compartments outside in the gunnel area without any problems. He cut the hole, removed the foam floatation, installed the compartments with 5200 and stainless fasteners. I located a photo taken at Genoa Bay which sort of shows the compartments. This photo is R-MATEY's Misc 2008 Album, Page 2, 6th photo on the page.

WOW, that's exactly what I'm looking for. Where did he get the compartment inserts, they look as if possibly manufactured/store bought, maybe from the C-Dory company??
 
You're correct that we did purchase the compartments from the factory but this was back when the previous C-Dory builders held a yearly party and would have items for sale at a reduced price. We picked up these compartments for $5 each. Also, that was the year we missed out on a radar arch which Jon (C-Lou) snagged for really low $$. There was a tug of war over that item but Jon won. Oh, for the good old days. Anyway, maybe the new C-Dory factory can help you out with the compartments?
 
Thank you for your help. I've sent an email to the C-Dory factory to see if I can purchase a set. By the way, I looked at your pics of the bulkhead installation your husband did on one of your C-Dorys, very nice job, first class all the way :)
 
Oh My! yes, that is a must have item! We fish just about every weekend here in the Puget Sound (Washington). I'll have to install one of these for sure :). Thanks for the link too. Just curious, what was used to cut the holes in the gunnel for the inserts, hatch, compartment, etc.....? sorry for all the questions but you've got my interest going with more modifications for our boat........lol
 
I don't know if these are the ones C-Dory uses, but they look very similar if not the same. Scroll down on this page and you will find various sizes of "Cockpit Storage Pockets."

Jigsaw with a new, sharp blade. To limit chipping, I placed blue painters tape along the perimeter of the hole, then traced the outline from the template on that. Probably not necessary, as the lip of the hatch is pretty wide...but it only took a few more minutes.

My guess is, a rotozip tool or one of those oscillating cutters would work as well.

As another option, if using a jigsaw, I've had good luck with the blades that look like they've been dipped in sand. If I remember correctly, they are "supposed" to be for cutting ceramic tile.

I've used a Dremel/Rotozip too, disadvantage being they really like to throw the dust. A Multimaster (or similar) will make a nice cut with a tiny kerf (and very little dust), but doesn't do the curves like a jigsaw.

I have an extra one of these storage inserts in good shape that came out of our boat at some time in the past. Let me know if you want it. I could bring it to a gathering in the northwest or maybe even ship it for what that costs.

I'm debating whether or not to do this mod. It would be nice to have some extra storage in the cockpit. What is behind the board? Is it just foam? What do I have to do to ensure a good, watertight seal after cutting and installing the insert?
 
If you used the same insert as we have. I think you could simply put a bead of sealant around the edge after mounting and call that pretty good. some sealant squeezed into each of the screw holes would be good too. There is a thin layer of fiberglass then just foam behind that. If you want any measurements or depths, I have a big hole in ours that is easy to access.

Cutting the hole and clearing the foam would be the hardest part of this job.
