Just got back from an absolutely fantastic 4 days in Tennessee. Such a great time was had by all. We met up with Brydman, Sensei, C-Pearl and Gypsy. We had the greatest Thanksgiving dinner with Patrick’s family and shared many wonderful breakfasts at the home of Patrick’s Mom. What a sensational lady Mama Byrd (Norma) is. The conversation was endless and the laughter was contagious. Mike and Brenda (Gypsy) took us down the Cumberland River with a destination of Nashville. We cruised by Johnny Cash’s home. We also got to try our hand at going through locks The thought was unnerving but it ended up easier than we thought. It was C-Pearl’s first time as well and we both did pretty good all and all. Mike and Brenda had reserved dock space in downtown Nashville. What a great spot and great time we had there. We got to meet Roger (Sensei) and Mike and Brenda (Gypsy) for the first time and it was a pleasure. It is so nice to be finally meeting people behind the boat names and these new friendships are ones that we will cherish and what makes this C-Brats site so wonderful. Thanks to all who were there for a wonderful memory! We look forward to meeting many more of you in the future.
Pics in album soon.

Sounds like you guys are no longer "displaced". Thanks for the write-up. It certainly expressed the best of C-Brats.

I wished I could have made it ! It sounded like a great time ! When Byrdman called me from wherever he was with Roger , I felt like I was missing something............Maybe next year .........

Rigby, you are right! what a wonderful couple of days we had "simply messing around in boats". Nashville was lots of fun, the great company of Foggy Dew, C-pearl, and C-Byrd was superlative! We could not have paid for better weather, had super food (on the table everywhere :D ), and enjoyed (? ) two lockages! The 3 guests, i understand, had never locked through before at Old Hickory, and handled it like pros!! It was good to meet Rchard, Donna, and Cathy for the first time. Roger and Jeff i had met before and was good to see em' again. My mom's house has always been a place where when all are gathered...laughter abounds. What a Thanksgiving.

Wow!! What a great time, great food, true southern hospitality. Thanks to all the Byrd family for bringing us into your family for this occasion. :thup I ate too much :tux

Byrdman

I'll be in Nashville over Christmas and would love to hit the river I grew up on. A couple of years ago, I went fishing out of Clarksville in December for catfish with a very good guide. In about 9 hours we caught more than 40 catfish, the largest about 34 lbs and the smallest about 6. The guide was disappointed we didn't get anything bigger.

I think I can remember some of the spots.

Tom...that sounds great. So far, I have been doing nothing but moving in and finding things in boxes....other than the few days on the river which was much needed. Come on down during Christmas...but, for river time this Christmas, I will have to defer to Mike and Brenda Byrd (the OLDER Byrdman.... ) due to Sherryl and me taking off to the Caribbean on a cruise for a bit of snokeling time. But....trust me...with my little 18Angler fast coming around to the get out and use it phase of the re-build, I will for sure hook up with some river fishing.

Tom... you going to be at the Seattle Boat Show stuff this year?

Byrdman....(the young one)

Pat,

I'll see you in Seattle. Have a good time in the Carribean. I was in the VI last year on a Windjammer Cruise. After my CD it's the only way to go. My next trip to the VI will be on my own boat even it its only a 22.

I'll be bringing the first production run of "Starboard" as opposed to "Port" for an after dinner drink. Of course it's green rather then red. Still working on the final formula.

Tom --
Casey on Naknek served a great GREEN scotch this past summer ito a few C-Dorys in Alaska -- glad to see that there will be a little 'starboard' at the SBS and we're looking forward to a sample of your 'brew' -- as well as a few pints of Pat and David's great beer. See you in a few months.

I had to post this one of TN M1 Tank Commander....and our faithful guide on this trip..... on the Cumberland River during our cruise.

Now...before all yall safety dogs out there start barking... it aint as bad as it looked.

We were waiting for our turn to lock back up river, one of our "convoy" had been previously appointed to be the radio guy for our group to contact, coordinate with the lockmaster....and the barge Captain. We had just received notice of where the barge Captain wanted us to be for his passing, and prior to our entry into the lock....

But... It did make a neat picture...

RUN GYPSY RUN!!!!!

Pat,

Was this off the bow or stern of the tow? I see two stacks seeming to indicate you were crossing aft, but I see a bow wave on the barge showing you off the bow. Was he pushing everything backwards?

tbrady,
i was passing off the stern of the tow! that is why "I' was in commo with the lockmaster!!! the tow had passed and i was headed for the lock. there was another tow waiting up top and the lockmaster (his name is Roosevelt) did a great job of locking us up between the tows. but i got to hand it to "little" brother...on the water he CAN identify the FRONT of a tow :xlol hope to see ya'll at the SBS :D :beer

TBRADY: Good eyes... The tug had just passed us. We were just below the dam, way over to the side directed by the Captain. He had just applied power as to start his move/alignment to make a quick turn to his port when I took the picture, SENSEI/Roger Johnson at the helm of C-Byrd. Then we were then told by the lock master, to "hurry up" into the lock ourselves. So, this put us all crossing in a "tight area" (for my comfort level anyway...), and as Mike indicated, Roosevelt was saving us the time of a wasted wait to ride the water up for the other barge set that was already in place at the top/upper river side .... I think Roosevelt cut Mike, and us a deal in that we did not have to wait for the commercial traffic to clear the dam prior to being allowed as recreational boats to pass thru the lock system. Sometimes you just want to toss the lockmaster a rack of ribs or something. :beer

Then, as we neared the top of our approximate 60+' accent, (Mike had not shared the part with us that another barge set was waiting...if he knew..and I forgot to ask) we see more smoke stacks....then the topside of the tug, then the barges... Now, the tug and barges at the top "waiting for the recreations boaters to get out of HIS way..." ... waited very nicely, very quietly, pulled hard to the starboard side of the waiting wall. Now, I have fished around barges tied to the bank...but trust me... when that lock wall opened up, and you see the true size of those big ol boys....ACTIVE AND WAITING TO GO RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE...  and you are in 18', 22' and 25' boats...and you have a "BIG'ol" 15 foot wide space between it and the hard walls of the dam to pass thru... Well.... you now understand why there is no picture of this... :sad :thup :smile :smileo :smilep Yep, I was way focused on getting about 100 meters up river quickly. :!:

And as Mike indicated. Yes... I know for sure what the front end of a tug and barge system looks like...even at night, in the fog, after "fishing :beer :beer " for a few hours. Some lessons in life you simply NEVER forget... and....if you are going to be stupid....you gotta be tuff...or tuff and lucky. Hence...me being the lucky sitting here today. :embarrased :smiled :thup

Man Brother...I wish I was back out there again today!!
"Little" Byrdman (Man...that is a stretch.... I suddenly feel slimmer "... thanks Brother!)

Pat or Mike,

Were you locking through at Cheatham or Old Hickory? I've been through both many times a few decades back but not since then. It kind of looks like the area below Old Hickory where the river is narrow.

I've passed many barges at night on the section of river between Nashville and Ashland City. It was always thrilling and you learn early on to always stay on the inside.

You are 100% on with the Old Hickory Lock and Dam. Ya oughta just take a flight down this way prior to things thawing back out up there.... and see some of your ol water lanes again.

tpbrady,
pat is correct ...that is below old hickory dam. if you are in the nasville area anytime give us a call! did i understand ya'll will be in the area over Christmas? my cell # is 615-218-9468 and is the best way to touch base other than e-mail. be glad to link up with ya'll during the hustle and bustle!!! :xlol :beer

Mike,

I be there for about a week and would like to link up with you if possible. I get back there about once a year around Christmas to visit the family and occasionally do a little fishing or deer hunting. I asked my brother give me a deer for XMAS last year. When I got in there was a doe hanging in the shed aging. It was more than a fair trade for caribou and halibut. My typical ratio is 5 lbs of whitetail for each pound of halibut, 2 lbs for each pound of salmon, and I trade the caribou even.

tpbrady,
the only thing we can do this time of year is give it a try! we run 100 m.p.h. during the Christmas season. my family is envolved with Big Brothers, down to the grandsons (11 and 9 years old) and bringing food, toys or clothes to those that have less than us takes some of our time. "b" and i would love to hear from ya'll still. a break in the action is a welcome moment to share with new freinds! :beer
stay in touch!!!

Roger - when you take quality pictures like that, you don't need a lot. Quality makes up for quantity.
