Harv, I like the true north on the radio and magnetic on the plotter so when my chart indicates an area of local magnetic disturbance I can glance up to see any effect, nothing critical, other than that No real reason, just what I am used to.

Can you tell if they are a surface deposit, i.e. raised or are etched into the surface?

How wide is the gouge, and how deep all along its length? If it is not too wide or deep you may be able to use epoxy, you can color it to match the hull. Best of course would be reglassing depending on how deep of course. Pictures would help. I had a similar gouge from Lake Powell, not an inch...

I've never heard of anyone doing that. I suppose you could if you could find the room. We have twin 40's and consider that we have a 40HP backup whenever we need it. From my perspective the potential for emergency use after both main engines failed would be extremely remote.
