05/08 - 05/10 - Friday Harbor, WA

Geez, Carl, I'd hoped you'd forgiven and forgotten that! "Pingu is Inuit for 'beer can boat' "- IRRC, the Rev. Dave put me up to that! Or Rev.Jim...or whoever it was!

Hello,

Oh well, if you gys are willing to accept me and my recycled beer can of a boat, the family and I would love to attend the Friday Harbor CBGT and see you all again. We had a great time last year.

Thanks,

Hey Pat, forgive and forget what? It was clever when you said it and I've often referred to it since. Besides, if it means I get to drink more of your beer...:-)

I have been chosen to be a juror on a trial which could last 12-16 weeks.
I most likley will not be able to get to the FH or Anacortes CBGT. This isn't
makeing me happy. I will be there if I can but not likey. I will still be boating
later in the summer.
:( john schuler :(

Wow, that is a big trial. We will look forward to hearing all about it when you finally finish and get to your boat.

Count me in !!!
Blue Bayou will be there on the second weekend of May, after attending the Seattle opening day ceremonies on Lake Washington the weekend before. Look forward to seeing you all in Friday Harbor.

I looked at the work calendar and decided to take the time off and join this gathering. What now? Do I have to reserve space at the harbor? Anyone want to cruise together since A) this is all new B) I have no electronics (GPS) yet. I can leave out of Everett, Whidbey, Anacortes...

Sounds like fun and my wife and I got engaged at Friday Harbor. I popped the question on the pier near the salt water aquarium. So it always has a special memory for us.

Unfortunately I can't make the official weekend but I do want to go over so I'm thinking that I might go the weekend of the 2nd. If you want to join me you would be welcome and we can go together. I can show you the way and it's really not hard to get there. I live in Oak Harbor so we could meet here or better yet if you have a trailer you could come to the marina at Cornet Bay. They have a good boat lauch ramp there and parking and it's right at Decption Pass and it's only about a two hour cruise from there to Friday Harbor. After you see the route you could make it on your own the next weekend with no problem.

Mark,

Glad you can join us. Except for signing up on the "Event signups" page at the top of the brat site, you do not have to do anything but get there. My wife and I will have mooring reservations for the group and there will be people there to help you moor. The usual routine for a gathering is: Arrive on Friday, usually noonish or later, dinner out Friday night at a local restaurant with many of the brats (We'll make those reservations too), No real group activities Saturday AM, Friday Harbor has enough so people find lots to do; many just hang around the docks, visit, gossip, etc. Lingcod and Shrimp seasons are open so some go fishing, others tour. Late Saturday afternoon there will be a potluck on the breakwater, everybody brings something but it is a true Pot-Luck so bring whatever you want in whatever quantity you wish, Sunday AM breakfast at one or more local restaurants, people start heading out after breakfast and most are gone by noonish. It would be helpful to get your names and boat name to help with the nametags.

As far as launch points and traveling with somebody, usually there will be some discussion of group travel as we get a little closer to the event, just keep an eye on the site. That will be dictated a little by launch site. I know some willl be coming from Cornet Bay on Whidbey, from Anacortes, and from Bellingham, others will be coming from points south so you should have no trouble finding someone to convoy with.

Oh, and since you will have a new boat, There is a tradition of boat christenings at gatherings. Either the Rev. Dave (Dave S. on Seashift) or the Rev. Jim on Laurie Ann. will be there, usually 3 or 4 boats get the treatment, lots of fun and no harm to boats, animals, or people in the production, Hint: bring some greenery and some adult beverage libations with which to christen your boat with her true name.

See you there.

Mark, most likely, I'll launch in Bellingham on Thursday afternoon, since I'm off work from the 6th through the 13th. You are welcome to join me.
Last year there was a flotilla of C-Dory's that cruised up there from Everett, so there is no shortage of options. If I'm not mistaken we christened about 9 to 11 boats. Even christened a "beer can" boat....(sorry Sarge, couldn't resist.... ....you do have a beautiful boat!)

Mark.
I will be heading up on Friday afternoon. I leave from Guemes Island right across from Cap Sante. Do you have a VHF radio? Even a handheld will do. The official unofficial channel for C-Brats in the PNW is 68.

Also both Barry and I will be available to do vessel safety checks, so have your boat in order and get your 2009 sticker. You don't need any electronics to pass. Not even a radio is required. Flares, running lights, proper display of reg numbers, reg on board are the usual problems.

Mark - we'll be cruising down from Bellingham, sort of out of your way, but look forward to hooking up with you in Friday Harbor (if not sooner) and comparing notes.

Bryant, we will be at Fishermans Bay the weekend of the 2nd. (At Islander Resort) for opening weekend, and cruising the area on Friday and Sat. Would be happy to meet somewhere out there if anyone is interested. (Islander resort has free moorage for opening weekend, and though I haven't talked to them for a month or more there was still room available then). Would love to cross wakes with some fellow Brats.

You guys are all awesome. I can see there will be more than a few options for a convoy over and I'm glad no one minds me following a big brother or two. I've done the Anacoretes route twice and the Deception Pass route once in my brother's sail boat, so I "know" the route. Assuming clear weather, I'd PROBABLY be fine, but there is safety in numbers. I'll figure it all out once the event draws a little closer.

David, I do plan on buying a VHF radio and my brother will walk me thru the install. I figured for basic peace of mind, weather reports, communicating with harbor masters, other boats and god forbid the CG, I'd need one. And if/when I eventually get an electronics package, should it contain another VHF, what's the harm in two?

As for the CG inspection I am going to get the requirements: fire extinguishers (2), throw cushion, life jackets, basic flare kit etc. I've already made a list of needed items. My brother's got a line on some and I'll get the rest. It's true what they say though: BOAT="break out another thousand". And last I checked, no money tree in the backyard yet. :?

We also are planning to attend this as our first gathering. We have lots to learn so will be asking questions... starting with- where is a good put in point coming from N. Idaho. I have a cousin in Olympia where I could leave our truck and trailer. Would that be a good option?

Olympia is more than 100 miles to the south and that route could expose you to some ugly water if the weather is not cooperating. I launch at Cornet Bay on Whidbey Island, Pros: Short, pretty route, safe parking, good launch ramps. Cons: $10/night to park, 20 miles off of I5. Bellingham is a good location. Pros: Free safe parking, good launch ramp. Cons: Bellingham Bay can be rough, longer trip, longer drive to launch ramp (about 30 miles north of Cornet Bay) Anacortes Cap Sante Marina is another good option. Pros: Short, pretty route, safe parking, no ramp/sling launch only. Cons: no ramp/sling launch only, sling launch is expensive, about as far off of I5.

All of these routes involve crossing Rosario Straits which can be quite ugly so careful attention to weather/tides is important. You will almost certainly be able to convoy across with other Brats.
