Patti and I have been looking for a location to have a Spring 2008 CBGT which we will be happy to host. After talking to some other brats and checking locations we propose Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. We have just returned from a great weekend there with Fred and Robbin from Anita Marie.

I talked with the harbormaster and they would be delighted to have us and will give us reduced moorage rates(regular 80 cents a foot for 2007). He offered their covered "activity barge" for free. They would reserve (for those of you who know the marina) the end of H dock and floating breakwater "A" just for us. This is to the right as you enter the marina.

For those of you who have not been there, Friday Harbor Marina is clean, well equipped and a protected moorage. Here is their website: www.portfridayharbor.org.

The town of Friday Harbor has a number of good restaurants including at least one big enough to use for the traditional Friday night dinner. It is a fun quaint tourist town and a major stopping point for the ferry from Anacortes so brats coming without a boat could take the ferry and then walk over to the dock. It also has the Whale museum, largely devoted to Orcas and well worth a visit, plus moped/car/van rentals to tour the island, etc, etc,. The island is the site of the famous "pig war",both American and English camps are national park sites and fun to visit, Roche Harbor is on the other end and along the Juan de Fuca side is Lime Kiln (Whale Watch) State Park, probably the best place in the islands to see Orcas from shore. Here's a site about Friday Harbor and the Island: www.guidetosanjuans.com/index.cfm?action=friday.

Taking a chance, I reserved the dates of Friday through Sunday, May 16-17-18, 2008, two weeks after "opening day". Shrimp and Lingcod seasons will be open then and I'm reliably informed that both are good near Friday Harbor. So we have a place and dates for a Spring CBGT. and, taking another chance, DaNag or Tyboo will you set up a signup sheet for this?

Lopez is on the 5th of may or opening weekend. I would still be up for another gathereing on the 16th . I love friday harbor, its where susan and I got married. there is a really good Itailan resturant at the top of town where we had are reception diner. counts us in no matter what weekend it is.

The Friday Harbor gathering in May is a great idea. The Lopez Islander is subject to the winds that time of year and over the years has made for some uncomfortable times at the dock. Count us in for Friday Harbor.

You have my undivded attention. Any excuse to go to Friday Harbor's Front Street Ale House, er, attend a CBGT sounds wonderful.

I'll be there. Kate may even come along. We will have to do a vote on the interest of the (in the past)free week-end at the Lopez Islander on opening week-end.

Thanks, Barry & Patti for offering to host this Springtime CBGT. Friday Harbor will be an excellent destination. Count us in :D

Well, you beat me to it! :( I was going to promote a CBGT the following weekend (May 22 -24) in Anacortes to run concurrently with TrawlerFest (sponsored by PassageMaker Magazine). I know the dockmaster at Cap Sante and was planning to ask him if he could make some smaller slips available for us. Plus I know I could get the Anacortes Yacht Club building for a potluck on Saturday night, since I am a member.

How much interest is there in seeing the boats, vendors, etc. of TrawlerFest either this year or next? There are classes also, but you have to register ($100 or so I think) to attend those.

Thanks Barry & Patty and Warren & Lori for being such willing hosts !!!
What's wrong with maybe having a progressive spring C-brat gathering.
I don't know about you all but starting in Friday Harbor and foolin' around for a week and then ending up at the Trawler Fest sounds like a pretty good way to start the boating season to us !!!!

Hi Bill,

That is a great pic! I also was in Friday Harbor maybe a couple of years earlier and remember seeing the C-Dory's for rent. I don't think I have a cool picture though.

I may be a able to make this. When do we need to make a final decision?

Steve

Steve,

There's plenty of time. We probably won't know the exact count until just a few days before the event. Eight boats are signed up already and I expect many more. as we get closer to May, 2008. I used 20 boats as a planning figure for the Harbormaster and can go up from there if necessary.

Count us in, Patty has signed us up! I'm guessing this spells the end of Opening Day at Lopez Islander? Nobody has stepped up to be the leader of that one...A pretty important point, these CBGTs do not happen automatically, somebody has to step up to host each and every one.

Sounds fun! We can only make it up there for one gaterhing in May and since we haven't stayed at Friday Harbor yet, we'll do this one this year.

<< I also was in Friday Harbor maybe a couple of years earlier and remember seeing the C-Dory's for rent. >>

I realize that this was "a few years ago", but does anyone know where I can rent a C-Dory in that area?

My wife and I are planning to spend this summer in the PacNW,(Port Townsend area) looking for a boat. We also plan to go to TrawlerFest and would like to at least stop by at the Friday Harbor event to drool.
