09/30 - 10/02 - Sequim Gathering

Well, I am sitting in Port Townsend waiting for the "calm seas" to come back. Left on Monday, and cruised to Blake Island. (just had to take advantage of the good weather :hot ) Spent an enjoyable night and a fantastic morning at one of my favorite off season spots on the Sound. Moved on to Port Townsend Tuesday. It was a fantastic day to be on the water. Anchored for a bit off of the south end of the Port Townsend Canal. Very calm and warm. Fog on Wed morning kept me at the dock until 4 pm. Looked good, so I headed east. I could see Protection Island just fine, but in a matter of 15 minutes the fog rolled west bound and had me running back to Point Hudson. Hum, fog at Sequim, imagine that! The winds kicked up last night and are blowing about 20-25 right now. Forecast is for the winds to die down tomorrow am. Maybe another night in P.T. Found the library and the free computer, a few good pubs, a nice fly shop and a great bakery. Not too bad. Should get to Sequim by Sunday  Looking forward to seeing folks.

PS, Jon and Mac, I found out some good information on coho fishing inside the spit. I just had to tell the guy I wouldn't share it with anyone!!! Robbi

Hi all,

Sequim looks like a great gathering, but we are not going to be there.

We are still in British Columbia near Campbell River and are going down island to the Gulf Islands next.

We will see you at the Boat Show party!

Our house faced Useless Bay on Whidbey Island - and we're seeing winds holding at 30 kt, gusts up to 40 kts. No rain (yet?).

So...I think I'm waiting 'till tomorrow before heading up to Sequim. Robbi - I hope you stay tucked in. Keep studying those fly fishing hints. Have you figured out anything else I should bring? Do you think there is any reason to bring my dinghy?

Winds are supposed to die down by morning here, and by afternoon at the east of of the straights - so a Friday arrival at Sequim is still in the cards. And Linda has donated a bit of Frambuesa (2005 vintage), so.....

See you'all at Sequim!

Mac

Mac, Frambuesa, I'm there come fog or gale force winds! Thanks Linda. :D It has settled down here in PT, I could have run up to Sequim this afternoon, but the forecast for tomorrow am sounds good. I will stay tucked in here and find a little pub for dinner. See you tomorrow. Robbi

If it is not a bother, bring the dingy.

Larry and Nancy, bummer you two won't be there. But hey, I'd say you're in pretty good shape right where you are. See you in January.

Robbi, yeah, like Four Lucky Fish Mac said: Stay tucked in up there and safe and all that. Do you have warm socks? See you Friday.

And is there a special prize for our as yet unmet East Coast pals Mary and Gene from DaydreamC-26, flying in all the way from over there?
I look forward to meeting both of you.

We've got a good thing going here, I'd say.
:male

Sequimdandy Jon, no whining from the catguy if we don't go international this year. I think to make such a wonderful but time consuming crossing we'd need to feel pretty dang confident the tiger continues to sleep.

Sequim Bay, Protection Island, Dungeness Spit, and maybe even Port Townsend are just fine with me. Then again, so's the dock!
:rainbow

Nice itinerary Brock, I was thinking the same thing for this year. And maybe I'LL drag a fishing line around for awhile, but first, I got to squeeze the secret salmon info out of Robbi. :)

Jon

The winds are dying down here - running about 12 kts now at the house. We peaked at 40 here, Mulkiteo measured 50kts. Got some blow down - the corn field looks like someone ran through it! Hope Roger's fields are OK!

Planning to leave early am - while there is enough water in our chasnnel to get out. If all goes OK, should get to Sequim around noon tomorrow

See you all then

Mac

I'm leaving the wonderful metropolis (yeah right) of Jefferson Saturday morning, and will be in Sequim around noon....the smoked salmon for the dip is thawing and the avocados for guac are ripening :) Really looking forward to meeting everyone....hope none of you Dodge and Chevy owners drool too much on my nice Ford.....my son just cleaned it up for me :xnaughty ar ar ar

Well, we are back on the edge - motor from Everett or drive around to John Wayne? Hmmm, what to do, what to do. It was blowing like Hades in Snoqualmie today, the rain was going sideways...guess we'll see what tomorrow brings.

Well, Shoot! If B~C can't make it then I guess we can't either.

Not really. I mean because of B~C. But we are really sorry that we can't make this one either. We're working on my Mom and Dad's 50th Anniversary the next weekend and there is way too much to still do.

Hope you all have a wonderful time in Sequim and we'll mark our calendar now for the Boat Show!

Hi Folks,

Here's the 8am forecast from Sequim Bay. High overcast, the bay looks like glass, visibility is really good, can see the mountains accross the straight. Can't answer for the winds on the outside though.

If anybody needs wheels in the vicinity we'll be motoring around between PA - Sequim and Port townsend today. Hope to see you and your boats later. Mary's cell # is 215 896 3773.

I finagled a double shift yesterday so I could skip work today to get everything ready to roll. We are hoping to pick Tiff up from school at 3:10 and get out of here shortly after. Kay is sick, and she's saying she might stay home. That means the clam chowder will be scorched because I will be the one heating it up. I think we can talk her into going, though. Hope so. But me and the kids will be there one way or another.

Well, good news. Kay packed dog food, so that means Skipper and Minnie are going, and Skipper ain't going without Kay!

Still shootin' for a 3:30 departure. Wish me luck!

looked at the weather and decided to stay home and fish in this area. I will near the lowel area on the snohomish on saturday and the ship wreck is that is slow. hope you all have fun at sequim with out us. And I hope Iam wrong about the weather.

Well, another great gathering in the books. Thanks to all who helped make it a memorable weekend. Great to see old friends and to meet some wonderful new folks, with and without boats. This C-Dory bug, when it bites you, it's all over. That's a good thing! Pretty impressive group that I feel honored to be a part of.

Saturday was a beautiful day. Spent the day fishing (not catching) but it was incredible to be out on the water surrounded by such beauty. The potluck was of course superb. The campfire warming and fun. The night sky last evening was a thing to behold. And the sunrise this am- you will have to wait for the photos of that. Wow!

This mornings weather made me glad for the millionth time that my boat is a C-Dory. Darn fine boat. To the C-Dory :cocktail

(PS It was great to see you, Dusty!)

Robbi

Maybe pix in the a.m. - right now, my hands haven't stopped shaking from the trip home. The event was all that Robbi said, and more - great day fishing (not catching), great potluck and campfire, and breakfast at the Oak Table was pretty special.

Getting to Sequim has never been been the problem. This year, we decided to cruise over from Everett, and it was a piece of cake getting there, 54 miles in just under 3 hours, Garmin trip computer said moving average of 19 statute miles per hour. Getting home, however, has always been a different story. In 2003 and 2004 it was pea soup fog. In 2005 it was a "stiff breeze" - which I think is an understatement.

We waited as long as we could for it to die down, then poked our nose out into the Strait about 1:30 p.m., and it didn't look too bad outside Sequim Bay for the first mile or so. We had considered a number of options, like leaving the boat at John Wayne, and taking up the offer of a ride from Brock, but we made the "go" decision in that first mile. Then it got gnarly - 3- 4 footers, about 9 knots max. We took a pretty good pounding here, Patty vows she is not going to Alaska (what the heck THAT has to do with THIS trip, I really don't know).

We rounded Point Wilson, and then went inside Marrowstone Island - a little choppy, but we ran at a good clip - maybe 12 - 14 knots, things are looking up! Through Townsend Channel to Oak Bay, my Gawd, back in the 3 - 4 footers, back down to 8 - 9 knots. Big time pounding. Patty is NOT a happy camper. Oscar however is not complaining. Crossed Admiralty Inlet, amazingly light, runing 11 - 12 knots all the way across, things are looking up! Ditto down Whidbey to the south tip.

Then, rounding the southern tip of Whidbey, the WORST we have ever been in, I would say 5 - 6 footers, and they seemed to be coming from two directions at once - down to 6 knots, and it was enough to jar your fillings loose, we just got pounded mercilessly here. Patty was calling this the "trip from Hell" and vowing she would never speak to me again. Oscar however was a real trooper.

Around the corner, all was calm again, and we ran at 14 - 16 knots all the way in to Everett, arrived 6:00 p.m., uneventful retrieval, uneventful trip home. Amazingly, the time back for the same 54 miles was only 4-1/2 hours, it definitely seemed longer. Patty is barely back to speaking to me again, but I DOUBT she will be interested in cruising to Sequim again...we are still hopeful for Alaska!

Hi everyone!

We are home :thup Thanks to everyone who has called and those who have emailed...we are most grateful for your concern. It was a rather ROUGH trip home. We left John Wayne at 2:20 and arrived Bellingham 6:35.. Really good timing. Joe is an excellent mariner (and boat surfer). Don't know what I'd do without him. We're sure happy that we have a C-Dory that can manage so well in adverse conditions. To use Joe's words, "It's one tough a$$ boat". Hope that Daydream and Two Lucky Fish have made it home safely.

Our sincere thanks to Jon and Cynthia for a wonderful get-together. You are great hosts. Our thanks, too, to everyone else who attended and helped to make this Sequim weekend such a wonderful memory. We just had a great time visiting with everyone. Mac & Linda, great job on my t-shirts and the new pirate flag for the R-Matey. Jim, I appreciated you showing me how to fish. Fred & Robin, loved that ice cream sundae. What a wonderful idea :thup And.....not to forget Roger and Lisbeth...got to enjoy that wonderful fresh corn for the second time this month, plus being chauffeured to the restaurant :thup

Ah, life is good :thup :thup

Ruth & Joe , Pat & Patty , Mack , and all the others that had to cruise home
I am so glad to read that you all made it home safely
I was quite worried that you would get out in the straits and have problems. the ferry was even bouncing around a bit when we returned to Whidbey from Port Townsend.

Well, it was another great gathering for the books. It was nice to see old faces and also to see new ones.It was a good potluck (as usual). The fire was nice (thanks Jon for the firewood). It is tooo bad that it was kinda drizzley while we were eating but it didn't seem to matter much.....lol....

We are looking forward to seeing you all at the next gathering(where ever it will be) and definatly at the Boat Show/Brat convention (SBS/CBC) in January
