B10 and Pacific Salmon - 2005

The weekend prediction is looking pretty good for the Mighty Pacific. And the tides are such that it should be a smooth run out and back in early before the normal wind picks up.

  • .SAT...N WIND 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT. NW SWELL 3 FT.
    .SUN...N WIND 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT. NW SWELL 3 FT.

This after three weeks of 30 kt winds and 8/7 foot seas. Anybody else thinking about a salmon run?

Tomorrow morning, the whole famdamnly is going sturgeon fishing on the river.
 
whoo ha, I have to talk to the kid, if he isn't game then I'll just have to scatch up another crew. Did you see the wetsand forcast for Monday? it must be a mistake, it's calling for 8-12 footers. As sunday draws near we'll have to keep an eye on that, if it isn't a mistake I sure wouldn't want to be outside if that weather decides to roll in early

YIKES!! That would almost call for a T~C, wouldn't it B~C?

No way for me. I check the buoy reports on the WWW before leaving the house, and the WX all the way out. That is really strange how it shoots up like that. Maybe they know of a storm brewing, or what?

Do you still follow the channel pretty close across the bar, or do ever you shoot over around the SJ? The Wall I think they call it. Me, I like the red line, but am willing to learn.

Maybe at high tide on Saturday - if the wind ain't blowing - I'll get a chance to try those ugly gaff hooks you left on the boat for me. Thanks.

Mike, If the conditions are nice I'll run along the green line and try for some nooks then head south if it doesn't pan out. Usually I just do the standard red line run. Saturday & Sunday may well be a good day to try the ugly jigs, between the SJ and the tip of the jetty you'll find where the depth jumps up to about 30', hover around on that ridge and fish untill you loose those jigs (10 minutes).
IT'S GOING TO BE A FABULARIFIC WEEKEND!!! me and Buckwheat will be headed down tomorrow so we can get an early start Friday. See you out there
 
The crew's lined up, the boats lined out, the gear is rigged up, the bait is on order, and the ocean is laying down. We're leaving the dock at 4:30am tomorrow (or as soon as we get the bait) and heading for points west. If it's foggy, we are going to go until it or the GPS breaks. We'll start near the CR buoy and troll to the green line until we see B~C or limit out. Back inside by 9:30. Maybe try for some ugly fish on the way in.

YO, my crew quit on me so I'lll be land locked Saturday, we'll be out for the Sunday harvest however. Today we started spinning the props at 6am and ran down the green line. Upon dropping the lines in the water one deckhand hurled and then retreated to the V-Berth for the rest of the day. We made one pass by bouy 1 then scedaddeld over to the CR. Hooked up with a pair of keeper silvers right off followed by some takedowns and a monster native silver that we had to turn loose. Headed back in about 9:00 before things got to ebbing to much.
The bar crossing was nice but inbound there was a band of thick fog that had layed in between B4 & B8, Mike, ya best get down to the pet store and see about purchasing a couple of pet bats untill you get the radar thing squared away, be carefull....remember, a power vessel underway needs to sound one 4-6 second blast every 2 minutes in the fog.

B~C, you was wrong about that fog band. It was thick, alright, but it was between CR and 10, not short like you said. It was only real thick for a ways. We ended up following a commie in at 8 kts anyhow, because I didn't want to be in his way if I decided to slow down. Didn't bother to stop for ugly fish, even though we could almost see the jetty. We did anchor for sturgeon just as Lynn Marie was pulling out, but got nothing there.

Other than a little fog, what a fantastic day! We ended up with 4 in the box (2 and 2). But they must not have been real hungry because we had a bunch of hits with no hookup, and we lost a bunch that were on the way to the boat. Also released two natives. Them fish have grown up since the first of the month! Not huge by any means, but they ain't trout. And my old dad caught three of the four keepers.

Came back in at 10:00. The water was flat calm the whole time. Back out tomorrow.
 
You guys are KILLIN me! I've had a reservation at Astoria since last October....now, with a new boat, I don't think we're going to fight the crowds at B10..we won't get her until probably the 12th and our reservation is 14th - 22nd....waaaaaaa :cry: We've both got a lot of learning before we cross the bar...and don't want a crash course!

Don't worry about the Bouy 10 crowds cause there's lots of room up river for some good fishing. A lot of us don't get a lot farther away from the Skipanon than downstream to Hammond and upstream to the bridge. Last year my nicest fish was a 32 pounder caught just at the mouth of Young's Bay below the bridge. There are boats around but the real ones to watch for are also easy to see cause they're REAL BIG and always in the channel.

Yup, we've fished that area for the last 3 years in a 17' sled...been looking forward to expanding our horizons :wink: ...we will, eventually...don't know if we might cancel the reservations and just take the boat to the lake a few times to get used to her....then may head down to Rogue/Chetco late September, early October for a week and see what we can do there...the Columbia bar makes me verrrrrrry nervous
 
Five fish for three poles outside the CR today. Couple of little guys, couple of mediums, and one nice feller. Left the dock at 5:00 and got back at 2:00. Not near as much action today. We lost two or three, released three natives, and maybe 4 short hits. The kid hooked the first keeper within three minutes of putting the gear in the water, and we thought it might just be our lucky day. The second one came about two hours later. Today, the kid's pole hooked the first three for the box, and my pole snagged the fourth. We had to wait all day for old dad to get the one measly fish he caught. Serves him right for bragging yesterday.

There was a real small tide exchange, so we were outside a couple hours into the ebb. No problems coming back. There were some swells that the CG called 4 to 6, but they were probably 4 to 8 with a couple of 10s. I was able to run at cruise all the way in. However, at 4400 rpm, the GPS speed would vary from 9 mph to 26 mph depending on which side of the hill we were on. How's a guy supposed to prop for that?

Saw B~C running around out there. He didn't seem to want to visit, so I lost track of him. Hope he had as easy a ride in as us.
 
Next time I'll raft up to ya:) we got some natives and two keepers. Sure was a nice day to be out and about.
We ran across a grey trimed no named 22' C-D south of the C-R., anybody we know?
I hauled to boat back home for de-Tox and plan on being back down to badger them fishes in a few weeks. If anybody is planning on hitting the mouth of the Columbia between now and the 13th I don't think anybody would know or care if you tied up in my slip
 
I saw a spare CD or two out there myself. One I have seen before, and I thought it was out of Ilwaco. Maybe Chinook. It has soemthing or other tied from the point of the bow up to the roof, but I have never got close enough to make out what it is. I hope it isn't a sail.

What time did you go in? I told you we were heading in an hour later when we saw you, but we ended up staying two more hours. Only got the one more fish, and it was a little guy.
 
Unlike you fellers, I spent the morning in the river with a friend chasing sturgeon and had a great day even without a keeper. Got to get a 6' to 7' guy to the boat for unhooking and it didn't take no darn 1:45 minutes, only about 20 minutes if my guess is right. Also had 6 other shackers to set loose but what a great day to be on the water. I looked at things this morning and today was sure the better day to head out over yesterday. Oh well, maybe next week-end will be my chance to haul supper home instead of just another fish story.

Mike, I've seen that C-D with the super structure out and about, in Ilwaco there are TWO, TWO mind you anglers with C-Lou class radomes.
When we left you we trolled past the CR and picked up a nook and went in and worked over the sunken jetty for a bit, no luck there.

Tim, sounds like you had a fine day with probably more action than we, it sure was a nice boat ride outside though.
 
looks like you west side folks are still loving life! Gonna have to get back out sometime and jump aboard. One thing for sure...Roger and Beth sure put me on some nice crab and shrimp, as did Pat and Patty for some nice whale sight seeing. Yall keep hauling em in. Cheers!

Bring it on, later in August you'd be more than welcome on the B~C....or ...you can bring the TC and leave it here and pick up a new one for the return trip :)

Interesting numbers on ther eport, Westport looks like Chinook central
 
I gots some free time right now and would like to figure some way to wrangle a fishing experience down thataway....lol..... :lol:
If a empty seat needs a fillin I will trade crab for :?: :?: :!:
