Well the great PNW weather "Poohbas" got it wrong as usual. About 4 hours ago it was 45 Kts At Smith Island. Now down to 15 and a nice sunny day. Just when I was beginning to feel sorry for David :twisted:
Now let's see what the next 4 hours will do...

Sounds like some of us need a double hobby combination of boating and surfing to take advantage of weather changes and extrermes.

Too bad so many of us guys are basically just old farts!

Nothing "bad" about that. Why, we've even got our own WINE

I've tried that stuff too, really pretty good. Not much to do with the Weather but when it's cool and breezy like it is now and the football games are on, it's pretty nice wine! :cocktail

My buddy and I left Havre de Grace, MD at the head of the Chesapeake Bay Saturday at noon and was going the the Little Choptank River for strippers. We were in his boat... a 27' Grady White Sailfish. It was a 4 hour run. When be were half way, about Annapolis, MD, I ask Charlie (no guys not Captains Choice) what the course and heading was on the GPS. His answer was, Oh... it's not working. Once you get below Annopolis the Eastern shore is hard to read for landmarks. We got below Thomas Point lighthouse and the wind out of the north kicked up from our stern to about 30 knots. We were in the middle of the Chesapeake with only his radar and compass to keep us on course and not hit anything. The visability dropped to about 2 miles.
By the time I convinced Charlie to find a Buoy Marker and use the radar and compass to a safe river cove the waves from the stern was over 10'. We found a marker at almost dark... we were below the Little Choptank by at least 10 miles. At 30 knots perpendicular to the wind I was never so glad the Grady had cockpit drains.
We hunkered up well within the Little Choptank last night in 30 degree temperatures with NO HEAT below... I froze my nuggies off. Three layers of Carharts not good enough. Moral of the story... don't assume. A couple of times... before we got to safe haven for the night was to say the least, the pucker factor was an 8 out of 10.
But we made it home the next day at 1:30 PM. He is going to invest in a GOOD Chart Plotter to accompany his radar.
All in all it was a fun trip... definiteally a learning experience! Butch

Darn right it wasn't Charlie!! I won't go out if the GPS isn't working and, I've got a backup GPS as well. Butch, it's Captain's Cat now, BTW. Lots gooder!!

The Captain's Cat is in Deale MD with a couple of guys named Steve!

Charlie,,, the good thing was the 'other Charlie' had to learn the hard way. According to our FlowScan we had at least 126 gallons of fuel at the "point of confusion". I had two buoys in sight when Charlie # 2 admitted he was kind of lost. The worst that could have happened would we'd have gotten wet just after calling the Coast Guard if we would have needed it. That would have been a long shot. We had twin 200 HP Mercury OB's. The pucker factor came in when he powered into a wave, the bow dug in and water cascaded overhead like in the movies. Charlie immediately cut the throttle without thinking and the following wave swamped the cockpit. There was over a foot of the Bay in the cockpit after that. Thank God for self draining cockpits... they are a God send on good boats. That's when he asked if I wanted to take the helm. With chart in hand we maneuvered close enough to a buoy to read the number,,, we were pretty much home free with a good working compass. We picked up buoy # 2 outside the Little Choptank and it was just trudging it in to safe haven from there. It is one of those things where some things just has to be taught the hard way.
The bad part was "the other Charlie's" wife bought him a RayMarine chartplotter depth finder (for 1500' depth) with enhanced fish identification two weeks ago,,, the dumb ass took it back for exchange! He said it was too complicated. He is rethinking his decision tonight. I also introduced him to the Wallas heater vented to the outside and used with a CO monitor in the cabin.

Now for the real scoop! We chummed the channel, worked the birds, and used blood worms, spoons, and rattle traps... and caught a butt load of strippers less than 18 to 20 inches. NOTHING OF ANY SIZE....

Bummer... but we did have an interesting time for sure.
