Milehog- . . .If you're really craving a C-Dory activity between now and Sequim, you could come over and help give the Blue~C a coat of wax :)

That Ken's quite a guy  always helpful

We headed over Friday night after work and spent the night on the boat at South Beach in Newport...fished Saturday morning and FINALLY came up with something that's easing the fishing withdrawals

Skunked again in area 11, beautiful day tho, my 4 yr old & his grandpa had a good bonding session. Anyone having any luck with silvers?

Hope to make it to Sequim next w/e...any good fishing holes up that way?

Beautiful weekend weather, absolutely delightful overnighter to Gig Harbor from a launch at the Eddie Vine ramp at Shilshole. Did slow cruising both ways, just to see what it felt like! 2400 rpm, speeds between 6.5 and 8.5 knots, mostly around 7 knots, saved a few gallons of gas. When we have the time, why not? Anyway, got there, Jerisich Dock was full, anchored out - then a boat left, and we were able to move on to the dock. Jim and Laurie Martinson from Laurna Jo came by, and Saturday evening, Scot Reynolds pulled up to the pumpout in his honking Meridian with the CD14 tender, we chatted for a few minutes, they went up to dinner and then left later that evening. Saw a green trim CD16 (Patty thought it was a CD19) with no name fishing in Colvos Passage on the way down, we waved at each other. Just caught a glimpse of a CD leaving Gig Harbor on Sunday, was that you Squarehead? Lots of fun talking to all the folks on the dock, lots of cool boats, I especially like a Willard named "Slow Dancer." Only shadow on the weekend, I was totally traumatized trying to dock against the wind, probably the worst job I have ever done - whatever I did, I could not get in close enough, no room to maneuver, and the jackass with the PWC on the dock would not walk over and take a line. Oh, well.

CatyMae: Did you get the hog offshore? I tried the river saturday morning for a couple hours and wasn't marking fish. Too much grass made it unbearable down by the marine science center so went offshore. Hooked up a small king almost immediately and decided to keep it considering how much a trip costs anymore. About a half hour later I hooked a much bigger fish. Fought like a king and I was finally thinking I had the key but got it up to the boat and it was a huge coho, over 20 but don't know how much over. Caught another one an hour later and had to turn it loose too. But my friend was using fresh herring and I stuck with the flasher and coho killer and he didn't get a hit till about 3 in the afternoon. Coast Guard was out there with the cutter and the inflatable. I got checked, first time in the CD. Forgot the new flares at home. That cost me a warning.

Are you the Jim and Wild Blue that visited North Lake Tahoe several weeks ago? If so, what happened to you guys? I checked out the campground and it seemed that you may have taken off early. If you did get around, how was it?

Hi Steve,
Yes, that was us (and it was a real pleasure to meet you - we certainly appreciate the local information you shared). We spent a couple days at Lake Tahoe; got to see some of that wind and wave action we'd heard about. The campground at the ramp where we met you turned out to be way too tight to get the truck and trailer in comfortably, so we went to the SE part of the lake the day after I visited with you.
Lake Tahoe is as pretty as advertised. All the areas we have taken the C-Dory to have been a real treat.
Right now we are back in south Texas for a couple months. Today was one of those typical windy days here: 15-25, two foot chop on the bay. 85º for the high and reasonable humidity. We saw one other boat out there this morning, just a few this afternoon. The six mile 'round the island trip to the end of the jetties took 19 minutes instead of the hour+ in the sailboats. There were 5' rollers coming in the jetties... we had windshield wipers wailing and had to close the windows thanks to the spray - but what a great ride! :D And another bonus: as we were heading towards the swing bridge on our way back home, we heard a commercial boat call for an opening... we put the coals to it and slipped through on the same opening instead of having to wait for the on-the-hour for non-commercial boats.
We've been here three days and have given 6 "tours"... 4 of the couples were folks we hadn't met before.
Best wishes,
Jim B.

ruh roh on the warning...we haven't been checked yet in the new CatyMae (and I still don't have the year stickers on her because she's been in the water since we got them)...Friday night after we first got to the boat, one of the CG boats came in our lane...know how huge those things are in a small lane? HUMUNGOUS! They asked if we knew where the boat was that had reported "continuous bilging." We told them we just got there and hadn't noticed anyone on our way down. They backed out of there like they had all the room in the world....went to the next lane and trekked into that one!

No, we got that fish early (7:15 or so) before the grass was a problem in the river not far from Sawyers...same place I caught one last year! I sure hope the fish are in the river for the U-DA-MAN tournament...(I'm dreaming they'll change it to you-da-WOman if I win....ar ar ar)

This morning the wind is predicted to be NE at 10-20 (actually NW@12 right now). I said to Joan, "Good day for a cruise up South Padre Island." For years, when we've had a NE wind, we've enjoyed motoring up the island, looking at the pretty homes, and a nice sailing reach back down in the Laguna Madre. Maybe toss out the anchor, make some lunch, and enjoy the shallow clear water. Joan said, "It really doesn't matter what direction the wind is now, huh?" :wink Good point.

It's a "Chamber of Commerce" day in the Tropical Tip of Texas: sunny, blue sky, nice breeze, humidity is only 45%, temp is expected to top out around 85º. I'm heading out for some "water therapy" and a further introduction of Wild Blue to her home waters.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Friend of mine asked me to buy a ticket for the tournament but I can't see betting $30 I won't catch a fish. I might go back over this weekend if I can get my motor running correctly. It quit on me in the bay saturday and I found out I left the vent on the tank closed. Thought all was well. Went up to the lake last night and it quit again. Has me a little edgy now. That will teach me to take it to a honda dealer and have a servicing done. It was perfect for the last 200 hours. I don't think it likes clean oil and new plugs. We were going to Squim this weekend but I don't want to go all that way if the motor is going to give me trouble. I was sitting in the boat at A dock when the coasties came through. Twin screws really help that hog turn. Good luck on the fishing. But it doesn't look like you need much more luck.

Ahhhh, we'll take all the luck we can get! :) echip trolling rig...the only way to go! A friend gave me one for my birthday and I won't be leaving home without it . . . we didn't see any other nets out in the river last Saturday, so it's still early for the river, I think. I also wanted to try Owner circle hooks...I tied up some mooching rigs with those (that's what --along with the fish swimming straight at the boat--lost me the fish weekend before last)...and now I'll find another use for those hooks . .. getting regular rigs tied up this week in preparation for the tournament...you should enter! Everyone has as good a chance as the next person!

Yesterday was such a beautiful day that I launched the boat and cruised through the Swinomish Channel, through La Conner and into Similk Bay where I spent several hours reading on one of the state buoys on the north side of HOpe Is. Left there and headed over to the docks at Cornet Bay where I spent the night. This morning I cruised under Deception Pass Bridge and through Burrows Bay on the waqy back home. I don't think I got over 8 kts for 90% of the trip.

CatyMae: Got the e-chip rig. I too swear by it. I convinced the guys I work with to by them. So they did, but don't have the patience to try them. That will change. We are coming down friday to give it another try, that and a little beach walking. I will watch for you guys. Probably will be the only way we will get to see a fish.

I was talking to a avid fisherman the other day and was showing him some new E-Chip rigs I bought at a garage sale cheap. he gave me a little advice about them. he says to take a little epoxy and put a drop at each end of the cchip to keep them from falling out when the plastic flexes. he said he lost several before he decided to use the epoxy

We spent the 13th through the 20th on beautiful Shast Lake. The scenery on this lake is incredable. The water temp. was 76 deg. and we able to catch and release small mouth bass from the kayak all day long.
We had the pleasure of meeting Joe, Cathy and Misty who brought their boat up the Mc Cloud arm for a visit. They even supplied lunch and brought us a few provisions. I can't thank you folks enough. It was a very enjoyable afternoon and I hope to return the favor some day.
We cut our stay short by a week due to back ailments but look forward to visiting this lake again in the future.

Roy and Lucky-

Glad to have met both of you and spent some time with you on our beautiful lake. Home to meet you again, soon.

Who's next?

Joe.

The past couple days we've gone out into the Gulf of Mexico and cruised around the southern Laguna Madre. Today was a real rarity - the Gulf was like a lake; swells 1-2 foot, very widely spaced. Truly as calm as I've ever seen it. And a beautiful turquoise. Another day in the mid-80s with low humidity and enough breeze to make it feel cool with the center front window open.

We see dolphins almost every day we are out, but today was especially cool: about a dozen adult dolphins and 4 pups put on a real show for us. We've never seen more than two pups in one group before... the little ones were jumping, splashing, and looked like they were wrestling with each other. The adults kept a close watch and kept them rounded up. And all this occurred a couple hundred yards from our canal on our way back in; we had the show all to ourselves... a really nice way to cap off the day.

Still getting lots of nice comments from neighbors as we come and go in our canal.

I was concerned about the heat and no airconditioning in the boat... the protection from the sun is nice and the ventilation through the boat makes it very comfortable. There is almost always a good breeze here, and that makes the cabin comfortable at anchor. I'm rethinking whether a/c will be necessary.

One last bright spot: gas on the water here is selling for $2.26 (about $2/gal less than what they were getting at Friday Harbor last month); I might not have to sell a kidney after all.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Jim-

Glad to hear you're getting some relief!

We are too. Bridge Bay on Shasta Lake dropped their price for regular gas from $4.95 to $4.20 a gallon! And I just bought a Sea Ray cruiser with 410 hp! Can I run a small pipeline down to you on the sourthern tip of Texas?

Joe.
